Euro 2025: Switzerland draws inspiration from historic upsets as it preps for Spain in quarterfinals

Switzerland coach Pia Sundhage is leaning into soccer history to prepare for one of the toughest games in her storied career Friday at the Women's European Championship.
Her fast-improving young team has a quarterfinal against world champion and tournament favorite Spain in the Swiss capital that once staged a legendary upset.
The 'Miracle of Bern' — when West Germany stunned Hungary in the men's 1954 World Cup final — might have seemed ancient history to Switzerland's players who have been taken to the nation's hearts this month.
A more recent vintage is Switzerland's men surprisingly beating Spain, the soon-to-be champion, at their opening game of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
'We try to share stories, that's what life is all about,' Sundhage said Thursday, hours after showing video of that 1-0 Swiss win to her players. 'Sharing stories brings us together.'
'And just the mindset that it is possible,' the veteran coach said. 'We feel it, we remind each other it is possible because it's football.'
Switzerland defender Noelle Maritz said listening to Sundhage and watching the game film 'really made me feel goosebumps.'
World Cup miracle
The modern Wankdorf Stadium that hosts Switzerland's first game in the knockout rounds at any Women's Euros is built on the site of soccer lore from 71 years ago.
The great Hungary team captained by Ferenc Puskás had beaten West Germany 8-3 in the group stage, and in the final scored twice within eight minutes. The Germans rallied to win 3-2 in a shocker that was the subject of a movie, 'Das Wunder von Bern,' which was released in 2003.
'We told that story as well, of '54,' Sundhage said Thursday. 'Those old stories and pictures are wonderful. If you want to change something you have to repeat it and have to spread the word.'
Sundhage credited the idea of seeking inspiration in the past from the squad's sporting coordinator, Johan Djourou. The former Arsenal defender went to three World Cups with the men's national team though missed the 2010 tournament in an injury-hit season.
'He was talking about it in a very emotional way,' she said of one of just two wins in 27 games against Spain for the Swiss men. 'There are some stories that we would like to happen again.'
Alexia and Aitana
On Friday, as it was 15 years ago, Switzerland will face Spanish generational talents: Andrés Iniesta and Xavi Harnandez then, Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmatí now.
'She's a unique player,' the California-born Maritz said of trying to control Bonmatí. 'She really knows how to decide matches.'

The host nation's Euro 2025 already will be remembered as a success in the national soccer story, even if it is Spain advancing to a semifinal against France or Germany.
Yet Sundhage wants more facing the 2023 Women's World Cup winner, which she expects will dominate possession of the ball.
'I would say this is the biggest ever' challenge, the 65-year-old coach said. 'We're going to play against the world champs, and on home soil. This is the moment.'

Create Account Faizullah Faraq, a spokesman for the regional Gilgit-Baltistan government, said rescuers were racing against time to reach Dahlmeier despite bad weather on the Laila Peak, where she has been stranded since Monday following a mountaineering accident. Dahlmeier, who also won the 2017 women's biathlon World Cup, was climbing Laila Peak in the Karakoram mountain range when she was struck by falling rocks. Climbers including two Americans attempting the same ascent are trying to join the rescue operation. Military helicopters were on standby but have been unable to deploy due to low visibility and ongoing bad weather and rainfall, Faraq said. Dahlmeier, 31, will be brought to the city of Skardu when she is rescued, Faraq said. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Local authorities launched the rescue mission Monday after receiving a distress signal from Dahlmeier's climbing partner, Marina Eva, who managed to descend to base camp with help from rescuers Tuesday. Dahlmeier was injured at an altitude of about 5,700 meters (18,700 feet) around noon Monday, according to her management team in Germany. German broadcaster ZDF reported she suffered serious injuries in a rockfall. 'There is still no clarity on her condition,' Alpine Club of Pakistan Vice President Karrar Haidri told The Associated Press. 'She sustained serious injuries, but she has oxygen with her, and injured climbers have been known to survive for days.' 'With heavy clouds choking the sky and rain falling on the high slopes of Laila Peak, rescuers are pushing through dangerous terrain to reach her,' Haidri said. Hundreds of climbers try to scale mountains in northern Pakistan every year and accidents are common because of avalanches and sudden weather changes. The region has also been battered by above-normal seasonal rains, triggering flash floods and landslides. Since last week, at least 20 Pakistani tourists have been missing after floodwaters swept them away near the northern district of Chilas. Granit Xhaka completes move to Sunderland from Leverkusen

Granit Xhaka returned to the Premier League on Wednesday with a move to newly-promoted Sunderland. The former Arsenal captain joined from Bayer Leverkusen and signed a three-year contract at the Stadium of Light. The 32-year-old Xhaka spent seven years at Arsenal, where he won two FA Cups before moving to Germany and helping Leverkusen lift the Bundesliga title in 2024 as part of a league and cup double. At Sunderland, his primary task will likely be to help the club avoid relegation. 'We are back to where this club needs to be, and we want to stay here to write our own history. I feel that I'm ready to help the team with my experience but with quality as well,' Xhaka said. Xhaka is captain of Switzerland and has won 137 caps for his country. Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman said the signing of Xhaka was a 'significant endorsement of our ambition and our desire to build a team our supporters can be proud of in the Premier League.' 'His accomplishments and quality need little introduction – he's a player of the highest calibre on and off the field,' Speakman said. ___ James Robson is at ___ AP soccer:

Leagues Cup roundup: Toluca FC rally to beat '24 champion Crew

(Photo credit: Joseph Maiorana-Imagn Images) Paulinho scored twice late in regulation, then Luis Manuel Garcia pulled off some penalty-saving heroics as visiting Toluca FC triumphed on penalties after rallying to a 2-2 draw against Columbus Crew on Tuesday night in both teams' Leagues Cup opener. Paulinho's goals came in the 71st and 80th minutes to pull the reigning Liga MX Clausura champions level. From there, Garcia saved three penalties -- first denying Diego Rossi his second goal from the spot in the 88th minute, then thwarting Rossi again as well as Amar Sejdic during the shootout. That was enough to help the Diablos Rojos earn the extra point in the standings, completing their shootout win when Helinho converted to make it 4-2 on the Mexican side's fifth kick. Rossi's 11th-minute penalty opened the scoring for the Crew, the defending Leagues Cup champions. Max Arfsten doubled Columbus' lead just after halftime on a composed finish after receiving Jacen Russell-Rowe's feed. Puebla 3, New York City FC 0 Emiliano Gomez had a goal and an assist as visiting Puebla eased to a deceptively lopsided victory over New York City FC in Harrison, N.J. Juan Fedorco opened the scoring in the second minute as NYCFC failed to clear the danger from a corner kick. Gomez doubled the lead when he reached Alejandro Organista's low cross in the 38th minute, and Owen Gonzalez finished off an excellent team goal in the 88th minute after Gomez's final pass. Jesus Rodriguez made five saves to keep the tournament's first clean sheet, on a night NYCFC narrowly led Puebla 17-13 in total shots. Matthew Freese made two saves for NYCFC. CF Montreal 1 (7), Club Leon 1 (6) Prince Owusu scored his 10th goal in 10 matches across all competitions, and Montreal prevailed on penalties against visiting Club Leon following their draw. Owusu leveled the match in the 62nd minute following a wonderful setup from Dante Sealy, canceling out Rogelio Funes Mori's 11th-minute header from James Rodriguez's long, early diagonal ball. From there, 13 consecutive penalty takers converted in the shootout before Leon's Sebastian Santos struck the crossbar with his effort, handing Montreal the extra point in the standings. Oscar Jimenez made six saves to keep Club Leon in it on a night they were outshot 17-4 overall and 7-2 in efforts on target. Tigres UANL 4, Dynamo 1 Angel Correa scored his first two goals for his new club, one in each half, and visiting Tigres UANL pulled away for the win at Houston. Diego Lainez added the eventual match-winner in the 63rd minute and Ozziel Herrera scored in second-half stoppage time of Tigres' third straight win in all competitions. Ondrej Lingr leveled in the 47th minute for Houston, which absorbed its sixth defeat in its oast nine across all competitions. The 30-year-old Correa, a member of Argentina's 2022 World Cup winning side, joined Tigres from Atletico Madrid this summer following the FIFA Club World Cup. He broke through from beyond the penalty box just before halftime, then added a second goal in the 70th minute on a breakaway after dribbling around goalkeeper Jonathan Bond. Mazatlan 1 (11), Los Angeles FC 1 (10) Fabio Gomes scored his first-ever goal for Mazatlan, and the visitors outlasted Los Angeles FC in a marathon penalty tiebreaker following a draw. Denis Bouanga missed LAFC's 12th penalty, sealing the extra point in the standings for Mazatlan. Bouanga previously missed a late, potential game-tying penalty against ES Tunis at the FIFA Club World Cup last month. In just his second game in the CONCACAF region since a 2021 stint with the New York Red Bulls, Gomes levelled the game in the 31st minute with a low finish to the far post after Dudu Teodora's pass found him in the right side of the penalty area. David Martinez had given LAFC the lead two minutes earlier with a well-placed half-volley on the run over charging goalkeeper Ricardo Rodriguez, set up by Tim Tillman's ball over the top. CF Pachuca 3, San Diego FC 2 Alexei Dominguez scored two goals and helped set up another as visiting CF Pachuca held on against San Diego FC en route to their fourth straight win in all competitions. Victor Guzman opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, on a chance set up by Dominguez's excellent diagonal ball, before Dominguez added to the lead himself twice. Emmanuel Boateng scored in the 88th minute and Luca Bombino added a goal deep in second-half stoppage time, but San Diego's late rally fell just short. In between those goals, Anders Dreyer was sent off to reduce the hosts to 10 men. Dominguez doubled Pachuca's advantage in first-half stoppage time when he collected his own rebound following Pablo Sisniega's diving stop and finished into the bottom left corner. Then Dominguez added what proved to be a needed third with another strike from beyond the box into the top left corner to make it 3-0 in the 67th minute.
