AP Source: Florida assistant Kevin Hovde is new head men's basketball coach at Columbia
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no official announcement has been made.
Hovde was on the staff at Columbia for five seasons, two alongside current Florida coach Todd Golden. He joined the program as the director of basketball operations in 2011 and was promoted to assistant coach the following season. In 2015-16, his final season at Columbia, the Lions went 25-10 and won the CollegeInsider.com Tournament.
After his time at Columbia, Hovde went to San Francisco, Richmond and then Florida. He's been with the Gators since 2022. Florida is a No. 1 seed in the men's NCAA Tournament and the Gators are in the Sweet 16.
The Lions parted ways with former coach Jim Engles earlier this month. He took over in 2016, a year after Hovde left. This season, Columbia had its best non-conference record ever, starting 8-0 and receiving votes in the poll before finishing 11-2, including a win at Villanova. It was the best start to a season since the 1969-70 team.
The Lions struggled to a 1-13 mark in the Ivy League because of injuries.
Hovde met his wife Jackie while at Columbia. She graduated from the school in 2009 and was a two-sport letter winner in field hockey and basketball. They have two daughters, Lyla and Penny.

SI's preseason bowl projections have Florida football playing in Citrus Bowl vs Nebraska
The college football season has yet to start, but that does not prevent the sports media from looking ahead to the postseason — despite it being four months away. Recently, Sports Illustrated joined its publishing peers in producing its predictions for the 2025 bowl season, which included the Florida Gators. In it, he has Billy Napier and Co. heading down the turnpike to face the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Citrus Bowl on Wednesday, Dec. 31. The Orange and Blue have played in the Citrus Bowl just three times prior despite being just an hour-and-a-half down the road, winning just once — a 21-6 victory over the Penn State Nittany Lions on Jan. 1, 1988. Florida has faced Nebraska twice in the postseason losing both times, including a demoralizing 62-24 defeat in the Fiesta Bowl for the 1995 national title. Other preseason bowl projections for Florida football CBS Sports writer Brad Crawford predicts that Napier and Co. will battle Bill Belichick and the North Carolina Tar Heels in the Gator Bowl held in Jacksonville, Florida, on Dec. 27. ESPN's Kyle Bonagura foresees Florida playing in the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tennessee, against the Kansas Jayhawks on Friday, Jan. 2, 2026, while his colleague Mark Schlabach has Napier and Co. playing on the same day in the Duke's Mayo Bowl held in Charlotte, North Carolina, against the Duke Blue Devils. Tom Izzo: 'I've adjusted to this new era more than I think. Sure, there have been some rough spots. But players are the most important thing to me.' The college basketball world is ever changing, and Spartans head coach Tom Izzo believes he's adjusted more than many believe. Izzo was speaking at the Larry Shyatt's coaching clinic on Wednesday, where he addressed a number of items in the world of college basketball. One of which was the ever changing nature of the college basketball landscape and how he's been forced to change his philosophy on a number of things. Per a post on social media from college basketball insider and reporter Jeff Goodman, Izzo believes he has "adjusted" more than he thinks, and acknowledged that it wasn't always easy for him to make the necessary changes. 'I've adjusted to this new era more than I think," Izzo said during the coaching clinic. "Sure, there have been some rough spots. But players are the most important thing to me.' This past year's success on the court for the Spartans helps vindicate that statement from Izzo, with Michigan State claiming the Big Ten title by more than three games and reaching the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019. Hearing Izzo acknowledge that there have "been some rough spots" should also be promising for fans since it shows he isn't set in his old ways and is clearly adjusting to the new era of college basketball.
