Urban cooperative banks in Tiruchi district yet to join UPI system
The urban cooperative banks in the district are yet to join the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system. The system enables customers to make payments using UPI IDs and use mobile applications to transfer/receive cash instantly. It will enable IMPS that can be operated via net banking or mobile banking. It helps the customers to store details of the receivers so as to make payment instantly. There are seven urban cooperative banks in the district. Except for the Tiruchi District Central Cooperative Bank (TDCCB), others are yet to join the UPI system. In the absence of it, customers, similar to the traditional system of banking, have to visit their respective branches to make payments, thereby causing inconveniences to them. 'Most of the banks had embraced the UPI system. Urban cooperative banks have a huge number of customer base. A large number of customers still impose faith in cooperative banks. However, they have not updated to the UPI system, thereby forcing us to visit the banks for transactions. It consumes precious time of the customers. ' says a retired senior official of the Cooperative Department. He said the UPI had made a significant change in the banking operations. It would save time and energy not only for the customers but also for the employees of the banks. It was time to connect all urban cooperative banks with the UPI system. Further delay would lead to decrease in the customer base. UPI coming A senior official of the Cooperative Department told The Hindu that the department had taken steps to bring all cooperative banks in the State under the UPI system. It will be done soon.

Kerala aims to create 1 lakh jobs by 2026 through start-ups: Chief Minister
Holding that Kerala is now nationally and internationally recognised as a haven for start-ups, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said here on Tuesday that the State was aiming to increase the number of start-ups in the State to 15,000 by 2026 to generate over one lakh new jobs. He was speaking at an interaction programme with select personalities from various fields in the district, held as part of the fourth anniversary celebrations of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government. The Chief Minister noted that the number of start-ups in the State has grown from 640 in 2016 to 6,300 at present, with total investments reaching ₹5,800 crore. The IT sector too has seen substantial growth. The number of IT companies in Kerala has increased from 640 in 2016 to 1,106 today. Employment in the sector has nearly doubled from 78,068 jobs in 2016 to 1,48,000 currently. IT exports too have grown from ₹34,123 crore to ₹90,000 crore. Knowledge hub Highlighting Kerala's emergence as a hub for knowledge and innovation, the Chief Minister pointed out that three of the top 12 universities in India, as ranked by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), are located in the State. Industrial growth in the State has also seen a marked improvement, rising from 12% in 2016 to 17% now. This, the Chief Minister said, was achieved through a series of legislative and regulatory reforms aimed at making Kerala more business-friendly. Under the LIFE Mission housing project, 4.5 lakh homes have already been completed, with another 50,000 nearing completion. He also announced plans to declare Kerala an 'extreme poverty-free' State by November 1, noting that the State has managed to reduce extreme poverty by 78%. Centre's attempts to centralise powers in the cooperative sector not in the best interests of the country: K.N. Balagopal
The BJP-led Union government's attempts to weaken the cooperative sector through centralisation of powers will significantly affect regional development, Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal said here on Monday. Speaking at the Cooperative Expo organised at the Kanakakkunnu grounds here by the Cooperation department, Mr. Balagopal said the unilateral decisions taken by the Union government in the cooperative sector were designed to assume control over the funds in the sector and its vast potential. The Centre was using multi-state cooperatives to push its policies through in the States. The attempts to centralise powers in the cooperative sector is not in the best interests of the nation, Mr. Balagopal said. The Centre should instead focus on empowering the cooperative sector which can benefit the common people both financially and in terms of employment, he said. While the cooperative sector are normally seen as credit societies, it can, in fact play a major role in taking the agriculture sector and the production sector forward, Mr. Balagopal said. Pachamama Coffee Vijoo Krishnan, general secretary of the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) and CPI(M) Polit Bureau member, underscored the need for the cooperatives to expand, drawing attention to the example of the Pachamama Coffee, which is governed through the farmer cooperative business model in the south and central Americas.
