Hawaii keiki showcase artistic talents in ‘Sew a lei for Memorial Day' poster contest
HONOLULU (KHON2) — Keiki around Oahu showcased their artistic talents by participating in the 2025 Mayor's Memorial Day Poster Contest and their creativity did not disappoint.
More than 40 K-12 students from schools around the island participated in the contest led by the Department of Parks and Recreation.
Kawaii Kon returns to Hawaii Convention Center for 20th anniversary
Officials gave a special shoutout to Hōkūlani, Hanalani, 'Ewa Makai Middle and Kailua Intermediate schools for their support and contributions to the contest.
Thirteen keiki were recognized for their creative talents and will have their artwork featured on Memorial Day publications and posted within Kapolei Hale.
The top three winners from each age category will be recognized by Mayor Rick Blangiardi, Honolulu City Council and Councilmember Andria Tupola during an award ceremony in April.The contest kickstarts DPR's statewide initiative to sew and gather 38,000 lei for those buried at Pūowaina for Memorial Day.
Pūowaina holds significant importance as it was designated the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific after the first Memorial Day Ceremony was hosted in 1949.
Since then, the City committed to placing fresh lei on each of the 38,000 graves for service members who reside at the cemetery.

She's part of a dwindling species, an unapologetic rock chick more focused on the tone of her guitar than the cut of her hair. Joan Jett's fierceness has been splayed across stages for 50 years, first with the all-girl glam-punk pioneers The Runaways and then through her own 40-plus years of solo stardom with her band, the Blackhearts. Her ingrained fist pumpers – 'Cherry Bomb,' 'I Hate Myself for Loving You,' 'Bad Reputation' and the cover song that changed her life, 'I Love Rock 'n' Roll' – were sonic wallpaper during MTV's heyday and most still haven't left pool hall jukeboxes. Jett appreciates her legacy and the fans who express their loyalty and gratitude for her music. 'It's medicine for the soul. I'm just blessed to be a conduit for it,' Jett says. Jett packed up with the Blackhearts – Dougie Needles on guitar, Hal B. Selzer on bass and Michael McDermott on drums – and hit the road with Billy Idol in April. They'll resume the It's A Nice Day to Tour Again! romp Aug. 14, but first, she and the band will park at Las Vegas' House of Blues June 13-14, 18 and 20-21. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster. In a recent conversation, Jett and career-long producer, business partner and keyboardist Kenny Laguna (who offered some humorous interjections during the call) talked about her Vegas show plans, playing the Nirvana reunion and why she feels wiser than ever. Question: You're heading to the House of Blues for several shows, you're also touring amphitheaters and arenas with Billy Idol and you've recently been part of stadium tours with Def Leppard and Poison. I get the feeling you prefer the smaller places. Answer: I do. I like the intimacy and when I can really feel the crowd and get a better sense of everything, that immediate feedback whether good or bad. It's exciting to play to a lot of people, but when you lose that connection with the crowd, it's like a black hole out there. Are you planning anything special for the Vegas shows? We'll look through all our records and choose what will work best live. I picked out a bunch of songs from every album and we went into rehearsals (before the Billy Idol tour) and ran through a bunch of them. There were a few I'd never done live, like 'Lie to Me,' and that's really worked out well. Have you ever thought of doing one album front to back? I'm not really into that. I didn't always love every song on my albums and I want to play what I enjoy. And there might be a few fans who might be happy to not hear the hits, but that's not most people. So I want to do what people want to hear and it's going to be fun. You were part of the Nirvana reunion at the FireAid show in Los Angeles in January. How did that come about and how did you get assigned 'Territorial Pissings'?Dave (Grohl, Nirvana's drummer) called me and asked if I wanted to perform with them and I thought, oh yeah, we'll do 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' like we did at my (Rock & Roll) Hall of Fame induction (in 2015). But it was more that Dave picked out the songs they wanted to try and he knew I liked that one. I recently talked to Billy Idol about touring with you and he said you've known each other since a 1978 Germs/Dead Kennedys show at the Whiskey in LA. Do you remember that night? Is that the show? I couldn't remember, but I do remember when we met. I I used to live across from the Whiskey. The apartment is still there and I've been dying to knock on the door and see who lives there. But everybody used to come to my house before concerts and party. There's a picture of Billy and me in my living room, sitting and talking with some of my friends. I have a drink in my hand. You have somehow managed to look the same for more than 40 years. Please tell us how you do it. I never had to work out my whole life. I was just lucky I had an athletic body. But now it's a different story. I see an arm and am like, 'Whose arm is this with the crepe-y skin?' (Laughs). But I try to walk every day and I do some weights. I had a shoulder operation so it's important to keep my muscle strength up and I do a lot of core work. And you know, traveling, walking through airports and venues, that's my exercise. But the traveling, that's the one part of my job that I don't love. It's all wear and tear on your body. Will you be able to get some rest after Vegas? I'm taking my brother and sister to Ireland. I've been there to tour but not in many years. I'm Irish, so to see Dublin and County Mayo where my grandparents are from … I'm really looking forward to not working and being able to take it all in and learn about the people. That worked out well to have a few weeks off before rejoining Billy's tour. You know, we get all wrapped up with what we're doing and time is limited. No matter how much money you've got, you can't buy time. I've done a lot of growing up. I've learned more from 50 to my age now at 66 than I did the entire first part of my life. You had a vision of the world and that's what it was and maybe you didn't question it enough. But I'm happy with what I've done and who I am.

7 Netflix crime dramas so addictive, you'll want to binge them more than once

Streamers like Netflix have a way of turning crime dramas into compulsive viewing, with stories that pull us deep into the dark side of human nature and show what happens when people decide the rules don't apply to them. It's not just the thrill of a heist or the tension of a cover-up that make them so perversely fascinating; it's watching ambition, desperation, and ego collide in slow motion, usually with a body count. It's the way power and avarice can build up and dash an empire. These kinds of stories, when you think about it, offer the entertainment of pure escapism and a front-row seat to chaos. Watching people doing things that are beyond me doing. And I think there's something of the comic book within them as well, in many aspects. And, there's a parody in a lot of it, too — because, in real life, gangsterin' is pretty horrible and heinous, serious stuff. I think it's just an escape. And there's freedom in it as well … like saying, 'No, I'll do what I want whenever I want.' We like to see whether they get away with it.' -Tom Hardy, in an April 2025 interview with BGR That mix of danger and hedonism is what makes these stories so hard to resist. And so, with that in mind, I've rounded up seven Netflix crime dramas that are so addictive, bingeing them just once won't be enough. Believe me, because I've burned through all of these at least twice. Guy Ritchie's signature swagger gets the perfect delivery vehicle in the form of this Netflix original that feels like a cross between Succession and a blood-soaked pub brawl. Set in the same universe as his 2019 film, the series follows a reluctant heir to a cannabis empire trying to keep the family business from going up in smoke. It's fast-talking, sharply dressed, and full of double-crosses, with loads of dry wit and a rotating cast of psychopaths who'll charm your socks off. With The Gentlemen, Netflix in my humble opinion has found its most effortlessly cool new crime franchise. This Swedish thriller is a pulse-pounding ride through the dark intersection of ambition and greed. A tech entrepreneur chasing startup dreams gets entangled in Stockholm's criminal underworld, and suddenly lines start blurring. Snabba Cash isn't just gritty; it's icy and ruthless, with the tension of a fuse that never stops sizzling. Paced like a thriller, it also makes you care deeply about characters whose choices grow more questionable by the minute. Ricky Gervais raved on X about the series: 'Just finished Season 2 of Snabba Cash. Blown away. One of the best series of all time. The writing, acting, direction, casting, editing, soundtrack, design and titles are all perfect. The Wire meets Wall Street. Stunning.' Based on the best-selling Danish crime novels, Dept. Q is a slow-burn procedural that follows a disgraced detective and his partner as they reopen long-forgotten cold cases — and also stumble into secrets that powerful people want to keep buried. The cases are haunting, the atmosphere is bleak, and the character work here is as sharp as a coroner's scalpel. And while the show leans into familiar, Slow Horses-style grumpy detective territory, I can't stress this point enough: Dept. Q is one of the best new Netflix shows of 2025. Oh, and it comes from the writer of The Queen's Gambit, in case you need another reason to watch. Jason Bateman as a criminal mastermind? Um, yes please. What starts off in Ozark as a simple money-laundering job quickly spirals into a bloody feud with cartels, corrupt politicos, and local crime families. Bateman plays against type as genius accountant Marty Byrde, while Laura Linney's Wendy evolves into his cold-blooded Lady Macbeth of a wife. What makes Ozark so good isn't just the danger; it's the slow transformation of Marty from a mild-mannered numbers guy into a master manipulator. Like Walter White, he's calm under pressure and scarily good at rationalizing his descent. But Marty doesn't break bad so much as calculate his way there. Watching him balance family life with criminality is like watching someone juggle knives while blindfolded. This Italian gem is a bit under the radar as far as Netflix crime dramas go, but Suburra is absolutely a must-watch for fans of international thrillers. Set in the underbelly of Rome (the name itself refers to a poor slum in ancient Rome), this series puts politicians, priests, and street gangs on a violent collision course. It's got the operatic intensity of Max's Gomorrah (which, cards on the table, just so happens to be my favorite crime drama of all time) but with more political intrigue and style that's just a little bit sharper, whereas Gomorrah is much rougher and much more primal. And when you're done, don't forget to check out the follow-up show with a similar title that's also available on Netflix: Suburræterna. This next beloved Netflix crime drama is basically a walking quote book. In creator Steven Knight's Peaky Blinders, Cillian Murphy leads a Birmingham crime gang with icy calm and steely charisma, in a show that fuses post-World War I ennui with rock 'n' roll swagger. What started off as a BBC period drama became a global phenomenon, thanks to Knight's superb writing, family drama, and style so slick it should be illegal. Whether you're watching for the gangster power plays or the killer suits, Peaky Blinders delivers. What's more: Netflix has also a feature film in the works that will serve as a one-off extension of the six-episode series. This final Netflix crime classic is more about psychological warfare. Produced by David Fincher, Mindhunter is all about the early days of the FBI's criminal profiling unit. Instead of car chases and shootouts, viewers are treated to chilling interviews with serial killers. It's methodical, cerebral, and utterly terrifying. Mindhunter digs into what makes monsters tick, and what it costs to stare them in the eye. Starring Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany, the series is so good that if you ask a group of Netflix subscribers which cancelled series they'd most want to see brought back — this one would end up on most people's lists, no question about it. Here's our first look at the return of Apple TV+'s biggest sci-fi series

Foundation fans, the wait is almost over: Apple TV+ has just released the first official trailer for the show's highly anticipated Season 3, and it offers a dazzling preview of what's to come. True to form, it teases jaw-dropping visuals and galaxy-spanning tension that make the series feel more ambitious than ever, and fans will get to return to this universe on July 11 when the first of 10 episodes drops. The rest will debut weekly through Sept. 12. Season 3 picks up 152 years after the events of last season, with the Foundation having grown far beyond its early ideals while the once-mighty Cleonic Empire teeters on the edge of collapse.
