Big Shield, available now

Big Shield, available now

Here's the thing about having a stack of unfinished manuscripts. At some point, each one needs to have its ass kicked out of the nest.
Big Shield gets its big shove today.
The pre-orders were surprisingly solid. I have no idea whether anyone will like it. I'm too close to it to know whether it's any good. I've read it at least twenty times. Refined it. Added to it. Subtracted from it. It's ultimately a word-by-word exercise in reading and re-reading and re-re-reading with no clear ending point other than deciding one day that it has to end.
On the Saturday morning of Memorial Day weekend, the first thing I thought when I woke up (other than, 'I need to piss') was that it's time for Big Shield to leave the logjam. It has officially exited, joining Father of Mine, Son of Mine, and On Our Way Home.
You can get the Big Shield ebook for only 99 cents. It's stupid, I know, to sell it for so little. I don't care about the money. (I really don't.) PFT pays the bills. I like having a creative outlet to balance out the endless stream of (as Simms calls it) copy/paste/snarky comment about football.
Big Shield is the first one about football. Pro football (but for legal reasons not the NFL). Football, gambling, the mob. The goal is to tell a good story, with circumstances that seem realistic and dialogue that rings true. Conflict. Tension. Twists. Turns. An ending that is surprising but, in hindsight, inevitable.
Big Shield has all of that. I hope you'll give it a try. I hope you'll like it. If you do, I hope you'll check out one of the other three. I hope you'll anticipate the next one. And the next one. And the next one.
Currently, there are six others stuck in the hopper, and a seventh one is under construction. (There's also a short story that scared the shit out of me as I was writing it; I'm still figuring out what to do with that one.) The goal is 20 novels. If I get to 20, I'll probably go for 30.
At some point over the past five years, writing became part of the routine, the same as doing PFT Live every weekday morning and then looking for things to write about here until I unplug from the real world around nine o'clock and spend a couple of hours in the strange realm of make believe.
I never have writer's block. I start typing, and the words roll out. When it gets going, there's a trance that's as potent as any liquor or drug. And probably as addictive.
I'll keep writing because it's fun. Hopefully, it's fun for you to read what I've written. I hope you will. I enjoy hearing from people who found themselves whisked away to a different time, different place. Wanting to know what happens next. Caring about characters who don't exist but who seem very real.
If you haven't read anything I've written (other than the stuff you read here), Big Shield is the perfect place to start. Especially since, at 99 cents, I'm basically giving it away.

Former NFL Star, Longtime Announcer Phil Simms Lands New Job

Former NFL Star, Longtime Announcer Phil Simms Lands New Job originally appeared on The Spun. 39 seasons ago New York Giants quarterback Phil Simms led the team to their first-ever Super Bowl title. In the decades since he retired, Simms has been working in broadcast media and for many years was part of CBS' No. 1 broadcast team alongside the legendary Jim Nantz. But Simms' contract at CBS expired after the 2023 season and last year he was working outside of the national sports spotlight. However, for the 2025 season he'll have a brand new job covering the sport he loves. The new job According to Newsday, Simms has been tabbed to work with NBC Sports covering college football games this fall. Per the report, he'll be serving as an analyst for three to-be-determined Big Ten football games on NBC's Peacock streaming service. Simms has both history and connections with NBC Sports. He previously worked for the network in the mid-1990s before embarking on his multi-decade run at CBS. His eldest son, Chris Simms, is currently one of the network's top analysts and has served as Mike Florio's co-host on ProFootballTalk Live. A mixed bag on commentary Simms isn't exactly beloved for some of his analysis though as he sometimes comes across as ignorant on the players he talks about. The most recent case that got on peoples' nerves was his coverage of New York Jets quarterback Brady Cook during Saturday's preseason game against the Giants. Simms remarked that Cook didn't have any help and couldn't find much success while he was playing at Missouri, which got a number of college football fans pissed off at him: "You'd think some of these guys should know something about college football but they don't," one user on X remarked. "Yes, because back-to-back, 10-win seasons and 2 bowl victories screams no talent. Sheezh!" wrote another. "Routinely amazed how awful some CFB takes are from NFLers," a third said. "Mizzou had by far the best offensive line in the SEC and also had a great receiving corps. Their weaknesses on offense were exclusively the QB and RB play." You can't please everybody and judging by this reaction, Simms might find his way under the skins of college football fans in the months to come too. Former NFL Star, Longtime Announcer Phil Simms Lands New Job first appeared on The Spun on Aug 19, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Aug 19, 2025, where it first appeared.

Mandy Moore's next TV project is a ‘This Is Us' reunion

Mandy Moore is reuniting with a member of her 'This Is Us' family for another television project. The Emmy-nominated actress is joining the cast of 'This Is Us' creator Dan Fogelman's upcoming Hulu series about the NFL. Moore, who played matriarch Rebecca Pearson on 'This Is Us,' is set to play Lauren, the daughter of William H. Macy's character, Hank. The project marks Moore's first major television role since 2023, when she played Benita Alexander in season 2 of 'Dr. Death.' Fogelman's new show is still untitled, but it also stars Law & Order: Special Victims Unit's Christopher Meloni as the head coach of an NFL team. Since 'This Is Us' came to an end in 2022, Fogelman has also teamed up with Sterling K. Brown, who played Randall Pearson on the family drama, for another television venture. Brown stars as Secret Service lead agent Xavier Collins in Fogelman's political thriller 'Paradise,' which has been renewed for a second season. 'What I love about Dan — he did the same thing with 'This Is Us' — he's like, 'I got six seasons in my head.' And for 'Paradise,' he has three seasons in his head,' Brown said during a June interview with Deadline. 'It's nice doing television with a beginning, middle, and end, because you're always building towards something. You're never just putting filler out there for the sake of filler.' READ MORE: Why people are calling episode 7 of 'Paradise' the best TV episode in years 'This Is Us' ran for six seasons on NBC from 2016 to 2022. The show centered on the Pearson siblings, Kevin (Justin Hartley), Kate (Chrissy Metz), and Randall (Brown), and their parents, Rebecca (Moore) and Jack (Milo Ventimiglia). The family's story was told across multiple timelines, with moments in the present as well as flashbacks to the siblings' childhood. Moore sang Fogelman's praises after she made her directorial debut on a season 6 episode of 'This Is Us' tiled 'The Hill.' 'I am eternally grateful to Dan Fogelman for changing my life in every way with #thisisus and in our final season, giving me the chance to helm a truly extraordinary episode of television written by the brilliant David Windsor, Casey Johnson and @chrissymetz,' she wrote via Instagram in December 2021. A premiere date has not yet been announced for Fogelman's new show starring Moore. 'This Is Us' and 'Paradise' are available to stream on Hulu. Our journalism needs your support. The 38-year-old reality star opened up about the first half of 2025 for her romantically on the Tuesday, Aug. 19 episode of her Let's Be Honest with Kristin Cavallari podcast. While discussing friendships, she touched on her longtime pal Justin Anderson, saying that she finds a lot of what she needs from her hair stylist bestie. 'I really am able to get a lot from Justin, which, hey, maybe that's why I haven't felt the need to settle or make a man work because I'm gained a lot from Justin that I would need from a man,' Cavallari mused, before adding, 'Other than sex, obviously, which we won't even go there 'cause the lack of that is, that's really sad.' The Hills alum noted that she hasn't been in the dating scene this year after her October 2024 split from her former boyfriend of seven months, Mark Estes. 'I haven't been dating this year, you guys. I haven't been dating,' she shared. 'I did just go on a date, and it was a great date and it was a really great first date back in the game … but I am kind of back out there, not back out there. I went on one date. But I was excited to go on a date.' And while she seems ready to return to the dating world, Cavallari added, 'I've needed this year to kind of just focus on myself.' However, despite claiming she hasn't been dating this year, Cavallari previously opened up about a short-lived romance she had with retired NHL star Nate Thompson this past spring. On an April 2025 episode of her Let's Be Honest podcast, Cavallari called their time together "the most honest, pure, amazing, quote-unquote relationship I've ever had." "He is an ex-hockey player. He's been retired for a couple years now. He's a dad. He's someone who has done a lot of work on himself, and we really connected on such a deep level," she said. "Honestly, one of the deeper relationships I've had, especially in such a short amount of time." Ultimately, things ended between them in March after Cavallari realized she "just didn't wanna be in a relationship" at the time. The jewelry designer and entrepreneur was previously married to retired NFL star Jay Cutler, with whom she shares kids Camden, 13, Jaxon, 11, and Saylor, 9. The exes split in spring 2020.
