Two Killed, Six Wounded In LA After-Party Shooting; Police Investigation Underway
Two people were killed and six others left injured in a shooting that occurred during an after-party in downtown Los Angeles overnight on Sunday. According to KTLA, the Los Angeles Police Department stated that the incident took place around 1 am on August 4.
Authorities confirmed that the gunfire broke out near 14th Place and Griffith Avenue, an area reportedly hosting multiple parties at the time. Police had already patrolled the location earlier in the evening, around 11 pm, after observing an individual entering an unauthorised gathering. The LAPD said they cleared out the event, which had more than 50 people present. During that sweep, one attendee was arrested for carrying a firearm.
Despite this intervention, officers were called back to the same venue following a radio alert about shots being fired. When they arrived, they found that eight individuals had been struck by gunfire. Two victims succumbed to their injuries, while six others were left wounded. One of the surviving victims is in critical condition, according to an LAPD spokesperson speaking with KTLA 5.
'It was pretty clear and loud… You knew that if those bullets landed in somebody, that they weren't walking away from the situation," said local resident Tyrone Laney in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.
The identities of the deceased have not yet been fully released by police. However, officials confirmed that the victims included a man and a 52-year-old woman. One died at the scene, while the other was pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital. Some of the injured victims were admitted to California Hospital Medical Center for treatment.
One of the victims has been identified as 29-year-old Gregory Derisso, according to his father, Judner Derisso. He described Gregory as a dedicated music producer and the father of three young children, all under the age of five.
As reported by the Los Angeles Times, the party was promoted online as an 'unofficial after-party" for the Hard Summer festival and featured house and techno music. An Instagram post advertising the event reportedly listed the names of DJs scheduled to perform.
No arrests have been made so far. Investigators are still working to determine a motive for the shooting.

UP ATS arrests homoeopath from Badlapur for anti-national activities
MUMBAI: The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested two individuals in connection with an alleged anti-national conspiracy aimed at disturbing communal harmony and establishing Sharia law in India. Among those arrested is a homoeopathy doctor, who was picked up on Sunday from his workplace in Badlapur, Thane district. (Shutterstock) The Badlapur East police confirmed that Dr Usama Maj Sheikh, who works at a private hospital, was arrested on Sunday night while on duty. 'The arrest was carried out entirely by the UP ATS based on their investigation. Our involvement was limited to providing logistical support,' said a senior Thane police officer. 'We ensured due process was followed during the arrest and court procedures.' Dr Sheikh was produced before the Ulhasnagar magistrate court, which granted a transit remand until August 8. We informed his family members about his arrest before he was taken to UP, said a police officer. The doctor's arrest comes after the UP ATS recently arrested Ajmal Ali, a resident of UP. Ali was one of the 400 members, many of them allegedly Pakistani nationals, in a WhatsApp group named 'Reviving Islam'. According to the ATS officials, Ali was allegedly promoting extremist ideology to incite hatred against non-Muslims on various social media platforms. When Ali was called for questioning at the ATS headquarters, he confessed to being in touch with several Pakistani nationals via social media. Officials said he also revealed he considered Dr Sheikh in Thane to be his mentor and that they communicated frequently via Instagram and Signal. They added that the two allegedly had 'extremist discussions about toppling India's elected government and replacing it with a Sharia-based system.' Following this, Lucknow's ATS police station registered a case on August 1 under Sections 148 (conspiracy to commit offences) and 152 (acts endangering the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. Ajmal was taken into custody and sent to judicial remand. An ATS officer said, 'Both of them reportedly promoted violent jihad, with the ultimate aim of carrying out Ghazwa-e-Hind and enforcing Sharia law in the country.' The ATS, in a statement, stated that the duo were also attempting to radicalise Muslim youth by inciting anger and allegedly encouraging them to engage in anti-national activities.

A 55-year-old Muslim man from West Bengal, Imamuddin Ansari, has been arrested for allegedly living in a temple under a fake identity for two years. He was staying at the Shani Mandir in Manti Hasanpur village of Thana Bhawan area in Shamli, Uttar Pradesh, posing as 'Baba Bengali alias Balaknath". The arrest came on Saturday night after Thana Bhawan police received information about his real identity. Police raided the temple and took him into custody for questioning. During the search, police recovered three Aadhaar cards and one PAN card from Ansari. One Aadhaar card carried the name 'Bangali Nath' and an address linked to a temple in Saharanpur. The other two Aadhaar cards and the PAN card mentioned his original name, Imamuddin Ansari and an address in Alipurduar district, West Bengal. Shamli SP Ramsevak Gautam said, 'A case has been filed against the accused under charges of making fake documents and hurting religious sentiments. The accused was produced before the Kairana court and has been sent to judicial custody for 14 days." Police have dispatched a team to West Bengal to verify the address and gather details about Ansari's background. Officials will check whether he has any previous criminal record and how the fake Aadhaar card was obtained. Police are also investigating if any other people were involved in changing his name in official documents. SP Gautam said no suspicious documents, bank accounts or evidence of religious conversion have been found so far. 'The matter is being thoroughly investigated. Strict action will be taken based on the facts that come out," he added. Hindu Groups React The incident has triggered anger among local Hindu organisations. District Math Mandir Pramukh Bharat Bhushan said the matter is 'unexpected and serious" and demanded strict police action. He added that temple organisations would start monitoring similar cases across the district. VHP District Service Chief Vinni Rana and District General Secretary Shalu Rana also condemned the act. They said their workers would keep a watch on people posing as sadhus in rural areas. 'Any conspiracy against Sanatan will not be allowed to succeed," said Shalu Rana. Finding an Assistant Sub Inspector from Indore in your DMs on Instagram is the last thing a murder accused facing seven criminal cases would expect. But this was going to be a first of many conversations that were allegedly exchanged between the two, with Madhya Pradesh police now stating that the ASI, Bhanu Tomar, orchestrated a revenge killing of his brother by engaging criminal elements – from murder accused to juveniles to those who have escaped juvenile homes. The movie, police said, was to avenge the death of his father, a former inspector. The bad blood between the two brothers, Bhanu and Ajay, dates back to 2017. Police inspector Hanuman Tomar was killed by his son Ajay over a family dispute at their home in Deednagar, Gwalior. Bhanu, who was attacked and survived, received a compassionate appointment as an ASI in Indore after his father's murder. Ajay's imprisonment led to his divorce, and Bhanu sold their ancestral house, sparking disputes over property and money, which were ongoing after Ajay's parole, police said. Ajay, who was sentenced to life imprisonment and was serving his sentence at Gwalior Central Jail, was released on parole on July 14. On July 23, while travelling by car from Shivpuri to Gwalior, he was shot dead by unknown assailants. Bhanu attended the final rites, and the family thought they had buried the hatchet, police said. Shivpuri Superintendent of Police Aman Singh Rathore personally monitored the investigation. 'The initial investigation revealed that the complainant, the vehicle driver Bhagat Singh, had stated that an unknown woman, who had been in contact with Ajay after his parole, had boarded the car at Kathmai Tiraha in Shivpuri on the day of the incident. She asked to stop the car at a secluded spot to use the restroom, after which unknown assailants shot Ajay dead,' Rathore said. A team of police officers, who scoured around 500 CCTVs between Shivpuri and Gwalior, found the woman with two of the accused, identified as Dharmendra Kushwah and Monesh Tomar, in Gwalior. It was Dharmendra who set the alarm bells ringing. 'He was involved in seven serious cases, including murder and attempted murder. In 2011, he killed a man named Pinkad Dada in his locality and was released from jail on January 26 after serving his sentence. He also met Ajay in jail,' a senior police officer told The Indian Express. The woman was identified as a juvenile detainee who had escaped custody in Indore. 'She escaped on July 12 and was also spotted in CCTV footage getting out of a vehicle owned by Bhanu. That's when we found that the ASI might be connected,' said an officer. CCTV footage confirmed Bhanu's car following Ajay's car before the incident, and his phone switched off afterwards, an investigator said. 'Bhanu had arranged for the woman to befriend Ajay… Based on a tip-off, Dharmendra and the girl were apprehended. During interrogation, Dharmendra confessed that after his release from jail, he posted photos on Instagram, and Bhanu made contact. He transferred funds to his account multiple times, and allegedly tasked him with settling scores with Ajay,' the officer said. 'On the day of the incident, the woman, as per the plan, had Ajay stop the car in a secluded area, where Bhanu and Dharmendra arrived in the former's car and allegedly shot Ajay dead. Dharmendra was hired for Rs 1 lakh,' the officer said. 'We think Bhanu is in Bangkok; a look out circular has been served,' the officer said.
