GRS-PH pact not finalised yet
KOTA KINABALU (Aug 5): A formal electoral pact between Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) for the upcoming state election has not been finalised, says Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Lumadan chief Datuk Mazlan Joehari Manan.
'We take into account views from all levels, from the grassroots to the leadership. What was stated by the GRS chairman reflects prior meetings among party presidents,' Mazlan said at a press conference on Tuesday, in conjunction with the upcoming Sabah Moto Day 2025.
He was referring to a July 27 remark by GRS chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor during the Gagasan Rakyat annual general convention, where Hajiji said the current GRS-PH cooperation would continue.
Mazlan, however, clarified that no concrete decision has been made yet, noting that any formal pact must be jointly announced by both coalitions.
'There are differing opinions among GRS leaders and members, and their voices will be heard before any final decision is made. The grassroots need not worry – nothing is set in stone,' he said.
Mazlan emphasised the importance of maintaining the existing GRS-PH government for Sabah's continued harmony, stability, progress and good federal relations.
On electoral cooperation, he said seat distribution talks are ongoing and remain unofficial.
'But for us, regardless of who GRS partners with, our priority is to dominate the state election. As I've said before, we should aim to contest at least 50 seats,' he added.
Meanwhile, in his capacity as Sabah Anti-Narcotic Squad chairman, Mazlan announced that the eighth edition of Sabah Moto Day (SMD) will take place from August 16 to 17 at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) parade grounds.
The event is jointly organised by the Anti-Narcotic Squad and Kelab Dua Roda Bersatu (KDRB), aiming to unite youth and raise awareness on drug prevention.
'In addition to motorcycle exhibitions, there will be booths, anti-drug talks and a testimony from a former drug user,' he said, adding that they are targeting 60,000 visitors.
The event will be officiated by the Chief Minister on August 17.

Deputy Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Fuziah Salleh said the decision to remove the egg subsidy with effect from Aug 1 has shown positive results. 'When the egg subsidy was removed, we found that there were no issues with supply or prices,' she said. Citing an earlier example, Fuziah said similar action was taken with chicken in November 2023, when subsidies were ended and the ceiling price of RM9.40 lifted. 'Before that, we struggled to control chicken prices, even with subsidies and price caps in place. Consumers still had to pay extra, such as for cutting charges. 'But after the subsidy was removed, we tightened monitoring across the supply chain – from production costs and raw materials to distribution and retail. 'We recorded chicken prices daily to ensure the move was working,' she said. As a result, she said that chicken prices have since stabilised, with some selling at lower prices than before. Fuziah said the ministry has the authority under various laws – including the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act, Supply Control Act and the Competition Act – to monitor and control supply and pricing at every level of the supply chain. She was responding to Dr Taufiq Johari (PH–Sungai Petani), who asked how the National Action Council on Cost of Living (NACCOL) ensured that government interventions truly benefited the people. 'We want to show that our policies are working and having real impact on the ground,' she said. The government officially discontinued the egg subsidy on Aug 1, after spending around RM2.5bil since February 2022 to support the industry. These subsidies were introduced in response to the global disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war, which pushed up prices of essential feed ingredients like soybean and corn. The financial aid aimed to help local egg producers manage higher input costs, prevent supply shortages and shield consumers from drastic price hikes. Fuziah said following three NACCOL meetings this year, several cost of living intervention measures have been implemented including in the health sector, requiring all types of medicines sold or supplied in community pharmacies and private health facilities to have price markings from Aug 1. 'Based on the outcomes of NACCOL meetings and development of the Cost of Living and Decent Basic Living Expenditure Indicator this year, we have begun advocacy processes for the public. 'Additionally, RM25mil has been allocated to implement the Madani Agro Sales,' she added.

New study underway to ensure fair pay for Gen Z, millennials
KUALA LUMPUR: The Human Resources Ministry is conducting a feasibility study on implementing a minimum wage for graduates, aimed at ensuring fair starting salaries that reflect their qualifications and skills. Its minister, Steven Sim, said the study, carried out through the National Wages Consultative Council, is a comprehensive effort crucial to addressing salary expectations among younger workers, particularly those from Generation Z and Y (millennials), who now make up the majority of the country's labour force. "The study is important to ensure that graduates, the majority of whom are from the Generation Z and millennial cohorts, receive starting salaries that are commensurate with their qualifications. "This includes ensuring their income is aligned with their academic qualifications and skills and is also relevant to the current challenge of rising living costs. "The findings and related policy proposals will be submitted to the government once finalised," he said in a written parliamentary reply published today. He was responding to Young Syefura Othman (PH-Bentong), who enquired about the government's intervention plan to improve the wage structure in employment sectors dominated by Generation Z and millennials, who are currently facing a high cost of living. Citing the 2023 Salaries and Wages Survey Report by the Statistics Department, Sim said 76 per cent of the 10.1 million wage earners are aged between 15 and 44. He said graduates aged 15 to 29, representing Generation Z, currently earn an estimated median monthly salary of between RM1,529 and RM2,076. Meanwhile, those aged 30 to 44, representing millennials, earn between RM2,702 and RM3,381. "The young workforce, which makes up the majority of the country's labour market, holds significant potential to be empowered through government policy interventions that support the improvement of their well-being and competitiveness in the future economy. "In this regard, the government has taken several strategic measures to address the issue of wage structure and ensure a fairer distribution of income, including the implementation of the Minimum Wage Order, the Productivity-Linked Wage System and the Progressive Wage Policy."

Bung: Sabah Umno won't be rushed into alliances without clear strategy
KOTA KINABALU: Despite having the autonomy to decide, Sabah Barisan-Umno will not rush into forming alliances with any party or coalition without a clear and well-defined strategy ahead of the state election, says Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin. The Sabah Umno chief said the party is mature enough that it will not panic and make hasty decisions like their opponents. 'Sabah Barisan-Umno has autonomy, yes, but we are also mature. We understand the meaning of unity, not only at the federal level but also at the state level. We are not hasty in announcing something without strategy. 'We do not follow the panicked rhythm of our opponents — those who argued yesterday, pose for photos together today, and return to backstabbing each other tomorrow,' he said in a statement on Wednesday (Aug 6). Bung Moktar was responding to Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) vice-president Arthur Sen's recent statement, who criticised Bung Moktar for using PBS as a political provocation, calling his conduct childish and unfounded. 'He (Bung) acted like a child… saying he does not want to work with PBS. But when did PBS apply to work with you?' Arthur was quoted as saying. Bung Moktar said he was amused by Arthur's remark, stressing that Barisan-Umno knows what it is doing and does not need any party, including PBS, to offer unsolicited advice. 'We know when to act, who to work with, and when to stand on our own. We have been consistent from the beginning — we don't want to work with parties that lack dignity, are insincere, and have a history of betraying their fellow comrades. 'Sabah Umno has had enough experience of being stabbed in the back, and this time, we will not turn back,' he said. 'We are not sulking. We are not threatening. We are preparing.' Bung said the GRS-led government has failed to deliver on basic needs, with unresolved water issues, unreliable electricity even in towns, and worsening roads. He added that the economy remained weak, investors are pulling back, and young people are leaving the state. 'GRS is not a unity government — it's a government in panic, scrambling for new alliances and trading principles just to stay in power,' he said.
