: Altogether, five persons died after they were struck by
lightning
strikes in two districts on Monday evening, even as an intense storm hit the state since Sunday. The storm with wind speeds up to 80kmph hit Ranchi on Sunday, uprooting trees and knocking out the power supply for several hours.
On Monday, the bolts killed three in Garhwa and two others in Hazaribag. The deceased in Hazaribag were identified as
Maghwa Manjhi
(56) and
Raju Kumar Yadav
(23). Manjhi, a resident of Senegarha Kalhuwa Beda village of Rabodh panchayat in Dadi block, was hit when he was standing outside his house, while Yadav, a farmer, was killed when lightning struck when he was working in his field at Asdhir village under Lupung panchayat of Katkaamsand block. Locals said they rushed Yadav to the Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College and Hospital, but the doctors declared him dead.
Dadi circle officer Kamalkant Verma said compensation would be provided to the dependents of the victims under the disaster management relief fund of the govt.
Separately, two cows were also killed by lightning in Hazaribag's Sikri village. Another six goats and two sheep were killed in Kunda village of Chatra by lightning strikes on Sunday.
In Garhwa, an 18-year-old boy, Tarun Kumar Deo, who cleared his CBSE Class X exam recently, were among the three killed by lightning.

The two other victims were identified as Shambhu Baitha (65) and Dharmendra Ram (35), both workers installing an asbestos roof of a house under the Meral police station. They were taking shelter from the storm under a Mahua tree when lightning struck. Tarun, who had gone to fetch hay, also took shelter under the same tree.
Another person identified as Dilip (22) was also injured. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem to the Garhwa sadar hospital.
IMD Ranchi head Abhishek Anand said parts of Gumla, Latehar, Lohardaga, Pakur, Dumka and Godda experienced thunderstorms on Monday. He also said the rising temperature during the pre-monsoon season, along with the incursion of moisture, created an atmosphere conducive for the lightning strikes. "Rising temperature is an important factor behind lightning strikes. Jharkhand's high altitude also contributes to the rising incidents of lightning," Anand added.

Neighbours and family described the siblings as reclusive, rarely venturing out. The deceased were identified as Viresh Kumar and Preeti Tomar, who were residents of Baghpat. Both were MBA graduates. Viresh worked in the IT sector. The police are investigating possible motives, including financial difficulties and depression. Police received a PCR call around 8.21 am, and a team rushed to the spot, which was a flat on the ground floor in D Pocket, Dilshad Garden. "The flat was found locked from inside, and on opening, the bodies of the two were found. They were tenants in the flat since 2021," deputy commissioner of police (Shahdara) Prashant Priya Gautam said. They lived in a one room set, paying around Rs 1,4000 as rent.
