LUCKNOW: Four people were killed and three others critically injured when a car collided head-on with a truck near Dhanaura turn on the Barabanki-Bahraich highway in Barabanki on Monday.
The incident occurred around 6 am near the Anchal Chanchal Dhaba under Ramnagar police station area.
According to police, an MUV car carrying seven people rammed into a truck, killing four occupants — including a woman — on the spot.
Three others, including two children, sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the Ramnagar Community Health Centre. They were later referred to the Barabanki District Hospital for further treatment.
Circle Officer Garima Pant inspected the accident site, while SHO Anil Kumar Pandey confirmed that the bodies had been sent for postmortem. Efforts are underway to complete the identification and inform all relatives.
Victims included Gonda-based property dealer and his relatives
Police said the victims were returning to Gonda from Kanpur after attending an engagement ceremony. The deceased were identified as Rameshankar Maurya, a property dealer from Kherwa in Gonda; his brother-in-law Sudhir Kumar; Sudhir's wife Shanti Devi; and the car driver, Ayaan.

Kolkata: In a bizarre turn of events, a Salt Lake-based entrepreneur, who lodged a complaint against her live-in partner for allegedly abusing her minor daughter leading to his arrest under Pocso charges, pleaded for his bail in Calcutta High Court on Tuesday because her "child misses her father (the live-in partner)". The woman told the HC that while her partner "is dying in prison", she was "dying outside". The court granted bail to the accused, who is at Dum Dum Central Jail since Aug 8, 2024, stating that "there is no immediate chance of conclusion of trial". Moving the bail plea before Justice Prasenjit Biswas, senior advocate Phiroze Edulji argued that Pocso charges were being "weaponised" in this case. Edulji said the woman met the accused in prison, and the minor daughter, who was allegedly abused, refused to corroborate the claims before the trial court. The state had to declare the child a "hostile witness", he said. The state counsel opposed the bail plea, citing several "incriminating documents" about the involvement of the accused in the crime. The state argued that it would be risky to grant bail when the trial was ongoing, and that the accused could tamper with evidence. Edulji said: "The woman said she lodged the complaint in a fit of rage. Her daughter, she said, misses her partner." "Failure to conclude the trial within a reasonable time resulting in prolonged incarceration militates against the precious fundamental right guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution," Justice Biswas said. The court noted that the victim girl (PW1), who already deposed before the trial court, was examined on Jan 8, 2025. It also noted that the victim girl was declared "hostile" by the prosecution, and nothing came out after her cross-examination. It was also noted that the de facto complainant didn't turn up in trial court on several dates despite receiving summons, the latest being on May 7. Justice Biswas directed the accused to furnish a bail bond of Rs 20,000 and directed him to appear before the Pocso special court, Barasat, on each hearing date. The court also asked him to stay outside the jurisdiction of Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate until further orders.

The system, developed under the supervision of police commissioner J Ravinder Goud, will offer real-time access to court information and updates on the status of cases. "This digital initiative represents a fundamental shift in how we manage court cases. After a month of rigorous development and training, we're here to offer this service to the public, making legal processes more accessible and transparent," Goud told TOI. The CCMS portal, officials said, would enable users to access court-related information remotely through their electronic devices. For law enforcement, the system provides live tracking capabilities across various sections, ensuring efficient case management and precise monitoring of hearing schedules. Rs 1.5k-cr govt land cleared of scrap godowns & sheds in Gurgaon
Gurgaon: A govt land — valued at Rs 1,500 crore — in Sector 21 was cleared on Tuesday. The anti-encroachment drive saw demolition of 20 scrap godowns and 30 tin-set rooms and huts using bulldozers. Originally acquired by Haryana Urban Development Authority (now HSVP) in the late 1970s, this area was meant for developing a sector. The team cleared about 15 acres of Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP)-owned land till evening. An HSVP official said the enforcement will continue on Wednesday, with a total of around 22 acres set to be cleared in the coming days. The official said, "Any future attempts to encroach will lead to FIRs and strict legal action." The drive saw heavy police deployment from Sector 22 police station. The enforcement was carried out in the presence of district nodal officer RS Batth along with a team of HSVP officials. Duty magistrate and SDE Surendra Babbar was also present. Soon after the operation began around noon, it faced resistance from locals and land claimants. According to an HSVP official, two days prior to the operation, public announcements were made in the area warning occupants to vacate the land. The drive was carried out as per orders from HSVP estate officer-I Rakesh Saini. In 2013, Punjab and Haryana high court ruled that only vacant plots could be acquired by the state govt. Those on which construction was carried out could not be acquired unless the land was needed for setting up essential public utilities such as roads, water and electricity infrastructure, the HC said. Haryana govt subsequently appealed against this decision and the case is pending before Supreme Court.
