Chhattisgarh: Driver opens door at 100kmph to spit gutka, man dies in crash; 3 hurt

In Chhattisgarh's Bilaspur, a reckless act by an Innova driver led to a fatal accident on Monday. While speeding, the driver opened the door to spit gutkha, causing the vehicle to flip and crash. RAIPUR: In a moment of recklessness, an Innova driver swung open the door to spit gutkha while speeding at more than 100kmph, causing the MUV to flip over and crash, killing a businessman and critically injuring two men in Chhattisgarh's Bilaspur on Monday. The Innova went somersaulting down the road, hitting two vehicles and injuring one of their drivers. Police said the deceased, Jackie Gehi, 31, a cloth merchant from Chakarbhatha on the outskirts of Bilaspur — 100km from Raipur — had gone to a late-night party on Sunday and called a friend, Akash Chandani, around 1.30am to pick him up. Akash arrived with another friend, Pankaj Chhabra, in an Innova. Akash was driving, Pankaj sat in the front passenger seat, and Jackie was in the back. On Bilaspur-Raipur highway, Akash suddenly opened the door while driving to spit gutkha. He instantly lost control of the vehicle, which swerved into the divider and overturned multiple times. The force of the impact threw all three occupants out of the vehicle, which went hurtling down the highway. Jackie was flung violently and struck a metal structure near the divider, sustaining fatal injuries to his chest, head, and shoulders. He died on the spot. Akash and Pankaj were also ejected and slammed into the ground, suffering grievous injuries. The out-of-control Innova slammed into a parked commercial vehicle, overturned four to five times more, and finally crashed into a parked Ertiga, injuring its driver, who never had a chance to turn on the ignition and get out of harm's way. The horrifying accident was caught on CCTV. The footage shows the vehicle flipping down the road, and one of the passengers being ejected and slamming into a pole. Emergency services were on the scene swiftly as passersby alerted authorities. Police sealed off the area and hospitalised the injured. The wreckage was later cleared from the road.

Boulder-laden truck crushes garbage vehicle, SUV on elevated expressway in Bengaluru; 1 dies, 2 injured

Bengaluru: A 25-year-old garbage truck driver died, and two others were injured in a chain accident, involving a boulder-laden truck, a garbage truck, and a multi-utility vehicle (MUV - Maruti Suzuki Ertiga) around 1.40am on the elevated expressway on Bengaluru-Ballari Road (KIA Road). Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The deceased was identified as Faizan Ahmed, a native of Bihar. He was working as a driver of BBMP garbage truck for the last two years. Based on a primary investigation, Hebbal traffic police said the truck broke down in the right lane of the expressway near Brigade Magnum building in Kodigehalli junction. Ahmed and his assistant cleaner, Marghboob Reza, were repairing the truck with no tail-lights or reflectors on. Meanwhile, a heavy truck, carrying three boulders, crashed into the garbage truck after its driver Harish, 36, failed to notice it parked. Due to the impact, the garbage truck toppled. Harish then drove the truck to the extreme left lane, hit the crash barrier wall, and collided with an MUV from the rear end. The MUV rammed into the crash barrier wall but fortunately, it didn't fall down. Ahmed and Reza sustained severe injuries. An ambulance rushed both to nearby Baptist Hospital, where doctors declared Ahmed brought dead. MUV driver's complaint: According to the complaint filed by MUV cab driver Suneel SG, he was heading towards Sarjapura to drop passengers he picked up from Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). When he was on the expressway, a truck loaded with boulders drove his vehicle at high speed and recklessly hit BBMP garbage truck. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now After hitting the crash barrier wall, it hit his MUV too. Reza was shifted to Victoria Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment. Harish also suffered an injury to his leg and is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Yelahanka. The Hebbal traffic police registered a case under BNS sections 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 125 (act endangering life or personal safety of others), and 106 (causing death by negligence) against Harish. Speaking to media, Suneel said, "Soon after my MUV stopped on the crash barrier wall, I got out and helped my passengers come out of the vehicle. A couple along with their two children, aged within 10 years, were in the car. They escaped unhurt, they were scared and were screaming for help. Fortunately, no one was hurt." Truck carried boulders from Chikkaballapur: The truck carrying boulders was coming from Chikkaballapura and heading towards Magadi. Driver Harish was subjected to an alcometer test and it was negative. We are not sure if the truck was carrying excess boulders; it will be investigated further, a senior officer said. Apart from the overspeeding, we found there was equal negligence on part of the garbage truck. The indicators and registration number plate were hardly visible due to waste covering it. There were no reflectors on the truck, the officer said. Traffic affected: A senior officer said traffic towards the city from KIA was diverted to the road under the expressway near Yelahanka until the trucks, MUV, and boulders were removed from the expressway using cranes and alternative trucks. The traffic was affected till 4am. But it didn't cause much inconvenience as it happened during odd hours.

IAF officer Shiladitya Bose booked for murder bid; CM Siddaramaiah slams anti-Kannada remarks

BENGALURU: In a twist to Monday's road-rage incident that snowballed into a language controversy, Bengaluru police have booked FIR against IAF Wing Commander Shiladitya Bose , charging him with attempt to murder and provoking breach of peace. The move follows a counter-complaint lodged by BPO employee Vikas Kumar, who was involved in a fisticuff with Bose when the latter was being driven by wife Madhumita Dutta to a bus stop on Old Madras Road. Kumar, arrested on the basis of Madhumita's complaint that said she and her husband were abused in Kannada before being assaulted, came out on bail and released a video Tuesday stating allegations against him were false. CM Siddaramaiah Tuesday condemned the incident and took strong objection to Wing Commander Shiladitya Bose's unwarranted and derogatory remarks about Karnataka and Kannadigas. Don't succumb to provocation or emotion: CM to Kannadigas Describing Bose's statement as "deeply disrespectful and inflammatory", the CM stated: "Kannadigas are proud of their mother tongue, but they are not parochial or intolerant. It is not in our culture to attack or abuse others over linguistic matters. Karnataka has a long and proud tradition of embracing people from across the country, treating them with respect and accepting them as one of our own. The inclusive spirit of this land is well-documented in history. It is deeply regrettable that certain national media outlets, neglecting their responsibility and professional ethics, have amplified a baseless accusation by one individual, thereby casting aspersions on the dignity of the entire state. This has caused pain and anguish to every Kannadiga. The state govt is treating this matter with the utmost seriousness and is committed to ensuring justice for the victim." The CM urged Kannadigas not to succumb to provocation or emotion and made an appeal: "Let us uphold the law and maintain peace. Karnataka is governed by a government elected by the people of this land, and it stands firmly for justice and dignity." The CM clarified that he has already instructed the city police commissioner to take appropriate legal action against whoever is involved in the incident regardless of their rank or position. "He (Wing Commander) attacked me and has given a false complaint against me citing language. Working in Bengaluru, I speak five different languages. What he has said is untrue. I'm on the verge of losing my job because of this," Vikas stated. Vikas recounted that he intercepted the MUV driven by Madhumita after it grazed his bike. He stated: "The person (Bose) sitting next to the driver's seat got down from the car and pushed my bike. When I fell on the road, the person claimed he was working in IAF, warned me not to play games with him, and assaulted me badly. When I took my phone to call a friend, the man bit me, snatched the phone and smashed it... He snatched my bike key and threw it. He tried to strangle me." Pro-Kannada activists gathered in front of Baiyyappanahalli police station and condemned the incident. IAF officials visited the station Tuesday and collected details to conduct a parallel probe.
