Bengal govt. slapped us with punishment postings: doctors
Senior resident doctors, who were the face of R.G. Kar protests in West Bengal, accused the State government of slapping them with 'punishment postings' as a backlash for protesting against the government, on Tuesday. They cited the postings of doctors Debasish Haldar, Aniket Mahato, and Asfakullah Naiya, which were different from the places they had opted for during the counselling. Dr. Haldar, a postgraduate from Medical College in Kolkata, had requested the West Bengal Health Department for a posting in the Department of Anaesthesiology at Howrah District Hospital. However, according to an official release, he was ordered to join the Gazole State General Hospital in Malda district. Doctors alleged that the post to which Dr. Haldar was shifted did not exist before the counselling sessions, which were held at Swastha Bhawan (Health Department headquarters) on February 27, and was 'created' as a form of 'punishment'. Dr. Mahato, a postgraduate in anaesthesiology at R.G. Kar, had opted to complete his senior residency at the same college but was posted to Raiganj Government Medical College and Hospital in Uttar Dinajpur district. 'I chose Howrah GH, and according to my rank, they allotted it to me. But after the lists were published, I saw that everyone got the postings of their choice except me. This can be a form of revenge,' he said. Dr. Mahato questioned that if the Health Department had conducted transparent counselling processes and assigned postings accordingly, then why did the final lists not reflect the same? 'We do not mind going to any corner of the State to perform our duties as medical professionals, but the process should be transparent,' Dr. Mahato added. Several doctors with a similar plight protested outside the State Health Department office in Salt Lake, waiting for answers from the Health Secretary Narayan Swaroop Nigam. Mr. Nigam told the doctors to file official complaints with the Health Department. He also refuted allegations of 'punishment postings'. Indiscriminate postings In a similar incident, on March 20, senior doctor Subarna Goswami, a Bengal-based senior physician and public health administrator who was vocal during the movement, was transferred from the post of Deputy Chief Medical Officer Health (CMOH)-II at Purba Bardhaman district to Superintendent at Darjeeling TB Hospital in North Bengal. Dr. Goswami claimed that the transfer was a 'vindictive step by the administration,' while sources in the Health Department described it as 'routine.' The series of transfers and postings have led to criticism within the State's medical fraternity.

4 new Covid cases in Bengal, health department says no cause for concern
West Bengal has reported four fresh Covid-19 cases from Magrahat in the South 24 Parganas district. According to sources, a 31-year-old woman and a 12-year-old child, both from the same family residing at Magrahat 2 block, have tested positive for the virus. According to sources in the Diamond Harbour health district, both visited the Magrahat Rural Hospital's outpatient department last week with complaints of fever, cold, and cough. Their samples were collected and sent for testing at Diamond Harbour Medical College and Hospital's laboratory. The results confirmed Covid in both cases. According to hospital sources, the woman and the child did not require hospitalisation and are currently stable and recovering at home under the observation of the health district authorities. The health department is taking regular updates regarding the health conditions of the two and has also asked local officials to keep a watch if anyone else in the area complains of similar symptoms. As a precautionary measure, health officials also tested the samples of their close neighbours, but no additional infections have been detected in the surrounding area. A pregnant woman has also tested Covid-19 positive and is admitted to a nursing home in Kankurgachi, Kolkata. A 15-year-old boy was admitted to a private hospital near EM Bypass as the latest Covid case. Hailing from Rishra, the teenager was brought to the outpatient department (OPD) on Saturday morning with complaints of high fever, cough, severe dehydration, vomiting, and diarrhoea. According to hospital sources, the boy had been experiencing fever, cough, and vomiting, and he was not recovering under the care of a local doctor. Notably, he did not show any signs of respiratory issues. He is currently receiving treatment in a single isolated cabin, following health protocols. A woman from Kolkata who tested positive for Covid was treated and discharged from a private hospital in Alipore during the second week of May. According to sources in the health department, although there is a close watch on the rising Covid cases across the country, there is no reason to panic or feel concerned in the state. Meanwhile, there's growing concern across the country as Covid-19 cases gradually resurface. States like Andhra Pradesh have already issued precautionary guidelines. According to the Union health ministry, India currently has 257 active cases. West Bengal has recorded a few isolated cases as well. Mumbai reported 95 new Covid cases in May, according to the Maharashtra health department. In Tamil Nadu, 12 new Covid-19 cases were reported. Karnataka confirmed 16 active Covid-19 cases, and in Gujarat, seven new cases were detected in Ahmedabad on a single day.

Two more multi-level parking facilities in the capital
The parking space available in the capital's busiest junctions and major commercial areas is set to expand in the near future with the commissioning of more multi-level car parking lots (MLCPs). According to Thiruvananthapuram Corporation officials, the ongoing work on the MLCP near Medical College junction is almost complete and is expected to be inaugurated soon. The MLCP at Medical College is being completed at a cost of ₹19 crore. It can accommodate a total of 210 cars. Another parking lot of a similar design is coming up at one end of Putharikandam Maithanam. The work is expected to be completed by June. One more multi-level parking lot project is being implemented near Chala Market. Currently, pedestrians find it hard to navigate through the road that passes through the centre of the market as vehicles are parked haphazardly on either side, leaving only a narrow space for vehicles and people to pass through. The parking lots near the commercial hub are expected to reduce congestion inside the market. The funds allocated for the work on multi-level car parking lots in Putharikandam Maithanam and Medical College, which were earlier planned under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 1.0 scheme, were last year transferred to the Smart City project as these projects could not be accommodated under AMRUT 2.0. Back in 2018, administrative sanction was accorded to a total of three MLCPs. The parking lot at the Corporation premises in Palayam with seven floors and a capacity to park 102 cars was completed earlier. However, with the time period for AMRUT 1.0 coming to an end in 2023, it was decided to transfer the funds to the ongoing Smart City. The AMRUT 1.0 scheme had a component for 'improvement in urban transport facilities', under which the MLCPs were planned. However, the AMRUT 2.0, which focuses more on drinking water related issues, does not have such a component. Despite the opening of MLCPs at Palayam and Thampanoor, wayside parking has not reduced drastically, pointing to the acute shortage of parking space within the city.
