Surprise inspection at fast food outlets brings to fore poor quality food, banned artificial colours
Dharwad: After the general public expressed concern over the fast food stalls operating in areas in Dharwad where there is dense population of students, the HDMC and food safety officials paid a surprise visit to several fast food stalls and also paying guest (PGs) facilities in Dharwad.
The officials were stunned to see unabated use of artificial colours, banned substances while preparing food, particularly egg rice, noodles, kebabs and gobi manchurian at various stalls.
The raid, which was led by food safety officials Altaf Ahmed, Prakash Mallapur, Javed Raibag, Heena Kurhahatti among others. The officials stated that the state govt has banned the use of artificial food colours in kebabs and other dishes like gobi manchurian and cotton candy, citing potential health hazards.
They stated that as per the govt orders, food safety and quality department has been checking the quality of kebabs being sold across Dharwad and Hubballi city and around 30 fast food stalls were inspected.
In some of the stalls, the fast food items including egg rice and kebabs were found to be 'poor' in quality due to addition of artificial colours, which can have serious impact on the health of the public. The food items have been collected and will be sent to laboratories.

"Stringent action will be taken against restaurants that are found using such chemicals for food preparation," the officials stated.
The drive was held at Saptapur, Durga Colony and Jayanagar Cross, where hundreds of food stalls have mushroomed. This drive will continue in other parts of the city and a hefty penalty will be imposed on food vendors using banned substances, they added.

Blood banks gear for festive season surge in donation
Mumbai: Across the state, blood banks have been advised to prepare for a surge in blood donation camps during the upcoming festive season, as social organisations and political outfits often mobilise large numbers of donors. In a circular issued on Aug 12, the State Blood Transfusion Council (SBTC) instructed blood centres that during the months of Aug, Sept, and Oct, collections should be planned according to the average demand of the past three years. The notice stated: "During this period, there should be no excess blood collection by your blood centre and care must be taken to ensure that blood does not expire and go to waste." The validity for one unit of whole blood is 30 to 35 days. The notice is in contrast to the situation just a couple of months ago when the city was struggling with a severe shortage of blood. It's hard to give an exact figure, but it's likely that a few units go to waste at nearly every blood bank," said a senior blood bank officer from a BMC hospital. "Each unit can save three lives, and once donated, a person cannot give blood again for another three months. Excess collection today can lead to shortages in the future," the officer said. Mumbai alone has 53 blood banks. Some officials attribute the over-collection to political pressure to continue donations even when demand is already met. Others point to inefficient management by both the SBTC and individual blood banks, with some centres attempting to hit their annual target of around 2,000 units. The city's daily blood requirement is between 1,000 and 2,000 units, and SBTC has asked organisers to hold donation drives when shortages are more likely. 169 MCD healthcare centres to be turned into Ayushman Arogya Mandirs
New Delhi: Municipal Corporation of Delhi is working on a plan to revamp 169 healthcare centres into Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAMs). To ensure that the corporation's poor financial situation does not hinder the opening of these centres, Delhi govt will provide Rs 25 lakh per centre. Additionally, Rs 2 lakh per centre will be allocated for furniture purchases and Rs 12 lakh annually for medicines, MCD officials said. Delhi govt aims to open 1,139 AAMs in Delhi and establish them at sites with basic infrastructure and other facilities in place. These centres aim to reduce pressure on hospitals, allowing people to receive timely treatment. "We referred our dispensaries, maternity and child welfare centres, and public health centres (PHCs) to be revamped as AAMs. Permissions have already been obtained to upgrade 51 sub-centres or dispensaries, 37 PHCs and 81 maternity and child welfare centres. While work has started at some sites, we are expecting 11 PHCs to open for the general public in the next 15-20 days as AAMs," said an official. The primary condition for selecting a centre as an AAM is that the building must be permanent and have at least five rooms, a waiting area, lab facility, a doctor, nurse and medical attendants. No AAM will be established in a porta cabin to ensure the primary healthcare system is strengthened on a permanent basis. "At most centres, doctors have already been appointed. But at other places where there are no doctors, we have requested Delhi govt to make arrangements," said the official. The official further stated that these health centres would have at least 14 general diagnostic facilities and 150 specialised test facilities provided, and testing would be done through outsourced labs. The staff present will collect samples from patients as needed. These samples will be sent to outsourced labs for testing, and the reports will be provided to patients. The civic body operates eight major hospitals like Hindu Rao, Balak Ram and Swami Dayanand, along with 90 maternal and child welfare centres, 54 dispensaries, 16 maternity homes, 11 polyclinics, 31 primary healthcare centres and other units.
