Post 2 downs Buckhannon 5-2 to begin Area 2 tournament, faces Bridgeport Wednesday
Mason Chaney led Morgantown, going 3 for 3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. UHS graduate Daniel Grabo added a pair of hits while his classmate Tommy Montague tossed 2.2 innings of two-hit baseball to close the deal.
With the victory, Post 2 advances to the 1-0 game of the Area 2 tournament to battle Bridgeport Post 68 Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Bridgeport defeated Clarksburg Post 13 5-2 in the opening game of the tournament.
'I loved the fight from our guys after letting a couple of runs early and actually falling behind at one point,' Goodknight said. 'They sort of small-balled us to death and forced some mistakes from us, but we came right back and put two runs up ourselves. Like we told them, in postseason play the goal is to go 1-0 every single day, every single game.'
Post 2 starter Jack Bryner allowed the first two runners to reach base but earned three straight strikeouts to close the top half of the opening inning.
Morgantown took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on an infield error, but Buckhannon punched back in the top of the third with two runs to steal the lead.
Post 2 tied the game in the same inning on a sacrifice fly by Nate Wolfe that scored Chaney. Bryner used only 11 pitches to exit the top of the fourth, giving his offense the much-needed confidence boost it needed entering the bottom half.
Parker Jeffries singled with one out, and Brance McCune followed with a shot to center that got past the outfield, allowing the go-ahead run to score as McCune took third.
He scored on another sac fly (this time by Chaney) to double the lead at 4-2, and the final run came in the fifth as Grabo took home on a wild pitch.
'Mason (Chaney) has stepped up for us on and off the field,' Goodknight said. 'We're up three, and he hits a ball in the infield but beats it out for a single on bad knees. That just shows the heart he has. After the game, he's in the dugout, making sure everyone leaves as a team together. All we ask of them is to play hard and play for each other.'
Post 2 will have a quick 24-hour turnaround against a talented Bridgeport roster. The winner will advance to play Thursday in the Area 2 championship and will hold the advantage of having a 2-0 record, needing to lose twice to be eliminated.
'Every day we try to emphasize the little things and do those right,' Goodknight said. 'It doesn't matter who we play, we are trying to go out there to win every game. We know teams are going to try to manufacture runs against us, so we need to remain focused on our goals at all times and how we can achieve those.'

Morgantown Post 2 falls to Beckley Bash 5-4 to bow out of Legion State Tournament
MORGANTOWN – Morgantown Post 2 head coach Jacob Goodnight didn't think his team played a clean game on Friday night in an 11-4 defeat to Charleston Post 65. That effort seemed to spill over slightly on Saturday as Post 2 fell to Beckley Bash Post 35, 5-4, in an elimination game under the sun. With the defeat, Morgantown's summer comes to a close on Day Three of the 2025 American Legion Baseball State Tournament. Both teams earned ten hits in the contest. The Bash was led by Ashton Cochran, who went 3 for 3 with an RBI. Mason Chaney also secured a three-hit game for Morgantown in four at-bats with two RBIs. 'It was a good game of baseball, but our errors came back to hurt us in the end,' Goodnight said. 'They made some errors also, but they got out of the jams when they needed to, and our mistakes seemed to carry over for a couple of batters, and they eventually got runs out of that. We put that three spot up but let them respond by doing the same thing, just a tough day for us today.' Beckley took the early lead in the bottom of the first inning but Post 2 responded in the top of the third as Eli Boggs doubled home Brance McCune to tie the game. Kane Williams singled to put two men on for Morgantown, and Chaney delivered with a two-run single to give Post 2 a 3-1 lead. But as Goodnight alluded to, Beckley punched back with a three-run inning of its own in the third to pull ahead again, 4-3. Post 2 came up empty in the fourth, and that opened the door for the Bash to extend the lead, 5-3, on a fielder's choice in the infield. Morgantown cut the lead in half on a single by Nate Wolfe that brought Williams around to score, but a double play ended the inning, and Post 2 would fail to find the equalizing run before it was too late. 'It took a while for us to bring it together this summer, but everyone got comfortable down the stretch and we won some games how we knew we could,' Goodnight said. 'We were a little bit tight this weekend in the tournament, but these guys let their talent show the last few weeks, and that's why we were able to be successful. We just asked them to play hard and keep showing up, that's all you can do.' Post 2 falls to Charleston Post 65, 11-4, faces elimination game Saturday against Beckley
MORGANTOWN – Morgantown Post 2 managed only four hits and committed three errors on Friday night in an 11-4 loss to Charleston Post 65 on Day Two of the 2025 WV American Legion Baseball State Tournament. Post 2 outfielder Kane Williams continued his hot streak at the plate with two doubles to lead Morgantown, but Charleston tallied 11 hits to score their 11 runs and advance to the 2-0 game against Wheeling Post 1 on Saturday night. Morgantown will square off with Beckley Bash Post 32 on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in an elimination game. Charleston starting pitcher Trisdon Ciampanella tossed 4.1 innings with only one hit allowed and ten strikeouts on Friday night. 'He (Ciampanella) threw a lot of pitches we weren't ready for,' Post 2 head coach Jacob Goonight said. 'He didn't have his fastball to start the game and was getting us to swing at pitches that were tough to hit. I don't think we honed in on our approach until the fourth inning when he left the game. We didn't change anything or try to adjust enough to win that game.' Charleston broke the ice in the third inning as Landon Nida singled home a run to give his team a lead it wouldn't surrender. Five more runs came for Post 65 in the top of the fourth on only three hits. Luke Buckner doubled, scoring two runs before an error allowed two more. Grant Barclay added a final one in the inning with a single. Post 2 got on the board in the bottom of the fifth as Parker Jeffries scored on a wild pitch. Mason Chaney and Nate Wolfe then each singled home a run to cut the lead in half, 6-3. But Post 65 scored another run in the top of the sixth and added four more in the seventh to slam the door on the tournament hosts. 'It started from the bats for us, when you aren't hitting well, it feeds into other areas of the game,' Goodnight said. 'It just wasn't a clean game for us. We preach clean, fun baseball, and I don't think we played the opposite of that today.' Williams' walk-off double lifts Post 2 over Parkersburg Post 15, 5-4
MORGANTOWN – Stepping to the plate in the bottom of the ninth with two runners on base and the game knotted at four, Kane Williams wanted a fastball, and he got one. The Post 2 outfielder drove the first pitch he saw in his fifth at-bat on Thursday night to left-center field, scoring the game-winning run as Parker Jeffries scored from second base, giving Post 2 a 5-4, walk-off win over Parkersburg Post 15 in the opening round of the 2025 WV American Legion Baseball State Tournament. Williams finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs, including the game-winner — his first career walk-off hit. 'I knew he was going to bring a ball up eventually; he was missing low,' Williams said. 'I got my weight back and shot it to the opposite field. Attacking the early fastball is my approach; it's going to be the best pitch you get every at-bat.' With the win, Post 2 advances in the winner's bracket and will face Charleston Post 65 at 7 p.m. Friday at Dale Miller Field. Post 2's Parker Jeffries sparked the ninth-inning rally with a one-out single, and Brance McCune reached on a dropped grounder to shortstop, setting the stage for Williams. Strong relief pitching kept the game tied, giving Post 2 a chance in the ninth. Hayden Jones threw 3 1/3 innings of scoreless ball after a rough sixth, and Tommy Montague closed it out with two shutout innings, striking out two. 'Tommy is our guy in a big spot,' said Post 2 coach Jacob Goodnight. 'Hayden gave us exactly what we needed too — he's a college arm and really stepped up.' Post 2 jumped out early with a two-run first inning, capped by a sac fly from Montague and an RBI single by Nate Wolfe. Wolfe later added a solo homer in the fourth, finishing 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Post 15 battled back with a pair of runs in the third and a game-tying bloop double from Carter Davis in the sixth. But they were shut down the rest of the way. McCune, who made a diving catch in right field in the eighth and reached base to help set up the winning run, drew praise from Goodnight. 'We don't give Brance enough credit,' he said. 'He does the little things right every time, so we kind of expect him to step up in those moments because we know that he is capable. Honestly, he is often overlooked by many people, including our staff. He just plays hard every day and comes to the ballpark to do his job.'
