Published on: Tuesday, August 12, 2025 Published on: Tue, Aug 12, 2025 By: Azmie Lim Text Size: The coastal attractions of Lahad Datu are starting to gain interest from European travellers who once came mainly for its forests and wildlife. LAHAD DATU: The coastal attractions of Lahad Datu are starting to gain interest from European travellers who once came mainly for its forests and wildlife. Tabin Wildlife Reserve and Danum Valley have long been the main stops, but snorkelling and island visits are now seeing a rise in demand. Advertisement District Officer Firuz Idzualdeen Mohd Dzul said stronger security, particularly patrols by Esscom, has given visitors the confidence to explore maritime spots that were once overlooked. 'This change in interest, especially from Europeans, is encouraging. In the past, they preferred forest areas, perhaps because they were seen as safer,' he said. Lahad Datu's waters include Pulau Tabawan, the Blue Ring Reef and coral habitats that remain intact and undamaged. Tour operators Robin Demowal and Sabar Jiran said more tourists are now arriving from countries such as Germany, Austria, Italy and Australia. They emphasised that visitors who were previously cautious are now taking boat trips and enjoying the coastline after seeing the security presence for themselves. Both operators hope the government, through relevant agencies, will expand promotion of Lahad Datu as a key marine tourism destination in Sabah. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Italy's Mount Vesuvius closed to tourists as wildfire rages
ROME: Italian firefighters on Sunday tackled a wildfire on the flanks of Mount Vesuvius, with all hiking routes up the volcano near Naples closed to tourists. The national fire service said it had 12 teams on the ground and six Canadair planes fighting the blaze, which has torn through the national park in southern Italy since Friday. Reinforcement firefighters were on their way from other regions and the onsite teams were using drones to better monitor the spread of the fire, the service said on Telegram. 'For safety reasons and... to facilitate firefighting and cleanup operations in the affected areas, all activities along the Vesuvius National Park trail network are suspended until further notice,' the park said in a statement Saturday. Nearly 620,000 people visited the volcano's crater in 2024, according to the park. The smoke from the fire could be seen from the Pompeii archeological site, which however remained open to tourists. Experts say European countries are becoming ever more vulnerable to wildfires due to intensifying - AFP

Aseanta launches tourism awards
Published on: Sunday, August 10, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 10, 2025 By: Bernama, Antara News Text Size: JAKARTA: The Asean Tourism Association (Aseanta) has launched two initiatives to expand tourism opportunities in Southeast Asian countries, reported Antara news agency. 'The first is the 39th Aseanta Tourism Awards, and the second is the Discover Asean microsite by AirAsia Move,' said Aseanta President Eddy Krismeidi at the launch event held at the Asean Secretariat in Jakarta. Advertisement Eddy said the two initiatives not only reflect Aseanta's response to current tourism challenges but also its readiness to seize future opportunities. 'These initiatives reflect our determination to recover, innovate, and thrive,' he said. The Aseanta Tourism Awards, he explained, have been held for 39 editions and have long served as a platform to recognise and honour the best in Asean tourism – from community-based initiatives to large-scale innovations in marketing, sustainability, and excellence in tourism services. Registration for the Aseanta Tourism Awards is now open and will close on Oct 31,2025, with the winners to be officially announced at the Asean Tourism Forum 2026 in the Philippines. The second initiative presented at the event was the launch of the Discover Asean microsite, a digital travel booking platform from AirAsia Move, introduced by Aseanta in collaboration with AirAsia. Advertisement 'This microsite curates essential and inspiring content, from cuisine, culture, and attractive destinations to verified immigration links and the latest travel information,' he said. The application, he added, integrates tourism services that travelers need and want while also enabling easy access to flights and hotel rooms. 'In this way, intra-Asean travel becomes more intuitive, informative, and inspiring,' Eddy said. Meanwhile, Indonesia's Deputy Minister of Tourism Ni Luh Puspa expressed the government's appreciation for Aseanta's efforts in realising the two initiatives. According to her, both initiatives are a tangible manifestation of a collective commitment that strengthens digital innovation, public–private collaboration, and shared sustainability values to reshape the regional tourism landscape. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
