K-P, Balochistan 'new battleground' in the US-China war

Express Tribune14-03-2025

Awami National Party (ANP) Central President Aimal Wali Khan has said that preparations are being made for a new world war between China and America and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan is their battleground once again.
We are once again warning the entire nation and state that the players have changed but another war is being planned to kill your and our children.
He expressed concern over the ongoing tension in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan and said that in the past, when America and Russia were fighting, we had warned that this was not jihad, but chaos.
Then our words were not taken seriously, but in return we were accused of being Russian agents. Today, not only our naive nation but the entire world is supporting our stance.
Those religious leaders who were sending your children to jihad yesterday, are now calling it as chaos. Pointing to the recent incidents in Balochistan, he said that violence is not the solution to any problem, it only complicates the problems.
Wali said that the real power of the people lies in politics, their weapon is to keep the flag of non-violence high. Mutual trust and negotiations are indispensable for a permanent solution to internal problems.
The solution to separatist movements is only political. Seriousness should be shown, we feel sad for whoever is martyred, we can feel the pain of the people who are facing difficulties, he added.
Demanding steps from the government for peace, Aimal Wali Khan said that peace must be prioritized at all times, which is the only way forward.
The problems must be resolved immediately, otherwise the situation may worsen. Transparency should be brought in the policies and they should be discussed in the parliament and the people should be taken into confidence.
A clear and effective strategy is needed regarding terrorism and separatist movements.
He further said that there should be no place for terrorism in the country and there should be no ambiguity on it.

Ukraine and Russia meet in Istanbul for new peace talks amid renewed violence

Listen to article Russian and Ukrainian officials are due to sit down on Monday in the Turkish city of Istanbul for their second round of direct peace talks since 2022, but the two sides are still far apart on how to end the war and the fighting is stepping up. US President Donald Trump has demanded Russia and Ukraine make peace, but so far they have not and the White House has repeatedly warned the United States will "walk away" from the war if the two sides are too stubborn to reach a peace deal. The first round of talks on May 16 yielded the biggest prisoner swap of the war but no sign of peace - or even a ceasefire as both sides merely set out their own opening negotiating positions. After keeping the world guessing on whether Ukraine would even turn up for the second round, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Defence Minister Rustem Umerov would meet with Russian officials in Istanbul. The Russian delegation will be headed by Kremlin aide Vladimir Medinsky, who after the first round invoked French general and statesman Napoleon Bonaparte to assert that war and negotiations should always be conducted at the same time. On Sunday, Ukraine launched one of its most ambitious attacks of the war, targeting Russian nuclear-capable long-range bombers in Siberia and other military bases, while the Kremlin launched 472 drones at Ukraine, Ukraine's air force said, the highest nightly total of the war. The idea of direct talks was first proposed by President Vladimir Putin after Ukraine and European powers demanded that he agree to a ceasefire which the Kremlin dismissed. Putin said Russia would draft a memorandum setting out the broad contours of a possible peace accord and only then discuss a ceasefire. Kyiv said over the weekend it was still waiting for draft memorandum from the Russian side. Medinsky, the lead Kremlin negotiator, said on Sunday that Moscow had received a Ukraine's draft memorandum and told Russia's RIA news agency the Kremlin would react to it on Monday. According to Trump envoy Keith Kellogg, the two sides will in Turkey present their respective documents outlining their ideas for peace terms, though it is clear that after three years of war Moscow and Kyiv remain far apart. Kellogg has indicated that the US will be involved in the talks and that even representatives from Britain, France and Germany will be too, though it was not clear at what level the United States would be represented. Ukraine's delegation will also include its deputy foreign minister, as well as several military and intelligence officials, according to an executive order by Zelenskiy on Sunday. In June last year, Putin set out his opening terms for an immediate end to the war: Ukraine must drop its NATO ambitions and withdraw all of its troops from the entirety of the territory of four Ukrainian regions claimed and mostly controlled by Russia. Ukrainian negotiators in Istanbul will present to the Russian side a proposed roadmap for reaching a lasting peace settlement, according to a copy of the document seen by Reuters. According to the document, there will be no restrictions on Ukraine's military strength after a peace deal is struck, no international recognition of Russian sovereignty over parts of Ukraine taken by Moscow's forces, and reparations for Ukraine. The document also stated that the current location of the front line will be the starting point for negotiations about territory. Russia currently controls a little under one fifth of Ukraine, or about 113,100 square km, about the same size as the US state of Ohio. Putin ordered tens of thousands of troops to invade Ukraine in February 2022 after eight years of fighting in eastern Ukraine between Russian-backed separatists and Ukrainian troops. The United States says over 1.2 million people have been killed and injured in the war since 2022. Trump has called Putin "crazy" and berated Zelenskiy in public in the Oval Office, but the US president has also said that he thinks peace is achievable and that if Putin delays then he could impose tough sanctions on Russia.

Microsoft's Russia unit to file bankruptcy as Putin pushes local tech dominance

Nearly three years after Russia's invasion of Ukraine sent shockwaves through the global tech landscape, Microsoft appears poised to sever another official tie with the country. A filing published on Russia's Fedresurs registry this Friday revealed that Microsoft Rus LLC, a key subsidiary of the U.S. tech giant, intends to declare bankruptcy. The move, while not entirely surprising, underscores the deepening rift between Western technology providers and Moscow. After February 2022, Microsoft had signaled a retreat first by halting new sales, then gradually scaling down operations in response to sanctions and the shifting economic outlook. By June of that year, most of its local business had been wound down, though critical services lingered. This latest development follows remarks by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who called for the throttling of foreign tech firms such as Microsoft and Zoom, urging state and private institutions to adopt domestic alternatives. The call reflects a broader strategy of digital sovereignty aimed at reducing Russia's dependency on U.S.-based platforms. Microsoft has declined to comment on the filing, and questions remain about the fate of its remaining Russian entities: Microsoft Development Centre Rus, Microsoft Mobile Rus, and Microsoft Payments Rus. The extent of their operational status remains unclear, though the bankruptcy of Microsoft Rus LLC suggests a final unraveling of what was once a significant presence in the region. What began as a strategic withdrawal may now be morphing into a full-scale corporate exit.

North Korea says military ties with Russia to ensure ‘peace'

SEOUL: North Korea on Monday defended its military cooperation with Russia, saying ties were aimed at 'ensuring peace and stability' in Europe and Asia. The two countries have strengthened military cooperation in recent years, with Pyongyang supplying arms and troops to support Moscow's war against Ukraine. Around 600 North Korean soldiers have been killed and thousands more wounded fighting for Russia, according to South Korean lawmaker Lee Seong-kweun, citing the country's intelligence service. A multilateral sanctions monitoring group including South Korea, the United States, Japan and eight other countries on Friday condemned those ties as 'unlawful'. In response, Pyongyang said its cooperation with Moscow was 'aimed at protecting the sovereignty, territorial integrity and security interests of the states' as well as 'ensuring peace and stability in the Eurasian region'. The statement by a foreign ministry official described ties with Russia as the 'cream of inter-state relations'. Pyongyang and Moscow, they added, could 'establish a multi-polar world order based on genuine respect for sovereignty, equality and justice'. The Multilateral Sanctions Monitoring Team, launched last October, monitors and reports violations of UN Security Council sanctions on North Korea, though it operates independently of the UN. Its creation followed Russia's veto of a Security Council resolution that effectively ended the system in place to monitor Pyongyang's compliance with UN sanctions first implemented in 2006 and subsequently strengthened several times. According to the group, Russian-flagged cargo vessels delivered as many as 'nine million rounds of mixed artillery and multiple rocket launcher ammunition' in 2024 from North Korea to Russia. In return, 'Russia is believed to have provided North Korea with air defence equipment and anti-aircraft missiles', it said. North Korea in April confirmed for the first time that it had deployed troops to Russia to support Moscow's war in Ukraine.
