Abhishek Bachchan on completing 25 years as an actor: It was nerve wracking, doing my first film Refugee

Hindustan Times6 hours ago

This day, that year- 2000 marked the much-awaited debut of an actor, born into one of the most illustrious families of the Hindi film industry. And it didn't take him time to carve out his own identity, one marked by a variety of films and performances. Today, as Abhishek Bachchan looks back at his journey till date, he only hopes that he has improved. Abhishek Bachchan
'Hopefully, there's been a fair share of improvement in these 25 years. As an actor, I definitely feel a lot more comfortable than I was when I first started. As a person, having lived and experienced that much more, obviously you're better equipped to handle situations. and that's all that matters. As an actor, you want to just keep trying to improve with every film and every opportunity that you get, and I hope I've managed to do that,' he tells us. 'BECOMING AN ACTOR WAS NERVE WRACKING'
Refugee, his debut film, had starred him opposite another newcomer, Kareena Kapoor Khan. Sharing how did he land his first film, Abhishek says, 'It materialised because JP Dutta (director) saab saw me at an award function and then approached me to do his film, and that's how it came about. That was his call entirely, and I'm eternally thankful for him, and to him, for that.'
Venturing into something he had known all his life, yet never done himself- was it nerve wracking? 'Of course, anytime you do something for the first time, it's terrifying, and it still is actually. First days are always something that give a lot of butterflies. But obviously getting an opportunity to make your debut with Mr. JP Dutta- that there is a thing of great privilege and honor, and I was immensely nervous,' admits Abhishek. 'I WAS SCARED TO DO COMEDY'
From then on, it was a journey of discovering what he can do on screen. From a biopic like Guru, to the first bike-action film in Hindi cinema, Dhoom- to even comedies like Bol Bachchan- Abhishek tried his hand at everything. Which genre was he most scared before attempting in his career?
'Comedy. I feel it's the most demanding genre of the lot. Because there's very little an actor can do to contribute to what's already written on the page. We're completely reliant on what's written. In dramatic scenes, you can take a dramatic pause. If that beat is not written into your comedy, it becomes very difficult to make it into a comic moment. So comedy is something I was very scared to do,' he says. Ironically, his recent film Housefull 5 was a hit- and a comedy. Happy New Year (2014), Dostana (2008) and Housefull 3 (2016) too saw Abhishek pulling off comedy. 'ANY SUCCESS MEANS THE WORLD'
Abhishek's recent years have been marked by experimentation. From Dasvi (2022), to I Want To Talk, and this year Be Happy doing well on OTT- how much does this phase of success mean to him professionally and personally? He also stars in King with Shah Rukh Khan. The actor replies, 'Any sort of success for an actor means the world to them. It's validation for your work and for your effort, and actors love that. We look forward to that. It means that the audiences for whom we work have appreciated our work, and that's most important. So any sort of success is always welcome and looked forward to.'

Kaalidhar Laapata OTT debut: Release date, platform, plot and more about Abhishek Bachchan's upcoming film

Kaalidhar Laapata OTT debut: After his recent appearance in Housefull 5, Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan is returning with a new film. This time his film is a stark departure from the adult jokes, comic timing, and murder mystery elements of his last theatrical release. He will next be seen in the upcoming dramedy, Kaalidhar Laapata. Kaalidhar Laapata will star Abhishek Bachchan, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, and child actor Daivik Bhagela. The film is directed by Madhumita. Kaalidhar Laapata will premiere on OTT, streaming exclusively on ZEE5 (OTTplay Premium). It will release on the OTT platform on July 4, 2025. The film is produced by Zee Studios and Emmay Entertainment. In Kaalidhar Laapata, Abhishek Bachchan plays the lead role of Kaalidhar, a middle-aged man who is struggling with memory loss and increasing loneliness. During the bustling Maha Kumbh Mela, he accidentally overhears his own siblings conspiring to abandon him. Heartbroken, Kaalidhar disappears into the crowd. On the run, Kaalidhar crosses paths with Ballu (Bhagela), an eight-year-old orphan who has learned to survive the harsh streets of India on his own. What follows is an unexpected journey of the two, filled with adventure, discovery, and emotional depth as the unlikely duo travels together — exploring ideas of self-worth, belonging, and second chances. Talking about the film, Abhishek Bachchan said in an interview with PTI: 'It is a very lovely film. It is about two friends... one Ballu and Kali.' 'Whatever film I do, I try to keep some quality of that character with me when the shooting is over,' he said. He also added, 'I think the latest work of an actor should be his best. This should be the effort. If there is no difference or improvement in the work I did 10 years ago and the work I am doing today, it will be sad. So I try to keep improving myself a little with every film.' Meanwhile, the film director Madhumita opened up about the film theme while speaking to the news agency. She said that the movie explores the theme of friendship and how friends are needed at every turn in life.

Jio Hotstar on Monday (June 30) unveiled a first-look teaser of Sarzameen, an upcoming Hindi film starring Kajol, Prithviraj Sukumaran and Ibrahim Ali Khan in the lead. The film, directed by Kayoze Irani, Boman Irani's son, is set to premiere on the platform on July 25. In the teaser, Prithviraj is introduced as a dutiful yet ruthless soldier, one who goes to any lengths to gun down terrorists in Kashmir. We see glimpses of an intense face-off between Prithviraj and Ibrahim, who plays a terrorist in the film. Meanwhile, Kajol plays a wife who faces immense ordeals in her husband's fight against terrorism. 'Set against the backdrop of an increasingly volatile Kashmir, the film follows Vijay Menon (Prithviraj), known for his unshakeable sense of duty and personal sacrifice. As Meera (Kajol), a strong mother and wife, fights to hold the family together, Harman (Ibrahim) brings a raw, simmering intensity to the role of a young man caught between shadowed memories and unsettling truths,' reads the plotline from Jio Hotstar. In an earlier interview with Variety, Kajol had opened up on working with Prithviraj and Ibrahim in the film. 'I've worked with Prithviraj [Sukumaran] for the first time, and he's absolutely wonderful to work with, and so was Ibrahim [Ali Khan], so I think it's going to be quite interesting to see both of them on screen,' she said. Sarzameen is written by Soumil Shukla and Arun Singh. The film has dialogues written by Kausar Munir and Jehan Handa. Hiroo Yash Johar, Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla, and Apoorva Mehta produce Sarzameen under their Dharma Productions banner. Star Studios is also producing the film.
