Melia and Carthy on target as St Pat's claim valuable win over Waterford
From the outset, Waterford looked hesitant in defence with Melia unlucky not to convert a Leavy delivery inside five minutes before Conan Noonan had a big chance for the hosts at the other end two minutes later, but he couldn't get a vital touch on the end of Finlay Armstrong's delivery.
It was the Inchicore side that broke the deadlock with 18 minutes on the clock when Leavy picked up possession of the ball in the middle of the park before releasing Melia, who was kept onside by Ryan Burke, and the Wicklow-born striker fired past the helpless Stephen McMullan.
Tommy Lonergan had a penalty appeal turned down on 29 minutes when he went down under a challenge from Anto Breslin, but referee Daniel Murphy waved away appeals, before Melia could have doubled the lead six minutes before the break only to fire inches wide.
Lonergan saw a looping header just clear Joseph Anang's crossbar on the stroke of half-time before the visitors started the second-half on the front foot with a big chance coming to their striker just shy of the hour-mark.
Leavy and Kavanagh linked up in the middle of the park with the latter playing Melia in between the Waterford defence, before European match-winner, Jake Mulraney saw his angled effort saved by keeper McMullan.
Second-half substitute Carty settled the game for the South Dublin outfit on 84 minutes when he peeled off his marker to get on the end of Kavanagh's teasing left-wing corner-kick to beat keeper McMullan with a left-footed finish from close-range.
Waterford FC: McMullan; Horton (Miles 59), Boyle (Coyle 84), Leahy, Burke; Armstrong (Dempsey 59); Rossiter (Glenfield 82), McDonald (Olayinka 59); Lonergan, Amond, Noonan.
St Patrick's Athletic: Anang; Sjoberg, Redmond, Grivosti, Breslin (Kazeem 38); Lennon, Leavy, Kavanagh (Robinson 90), Forrester (Baggley 90), Mulraney (Carthy 75); Melia (Power 75).

Enzo Maresca has identified the area of his squad that he'd most like to strengthen DONN THE MOVE? Chelsea fans are crying out for Gianluigi Donnarumma and Marc Guehi – how likely are either transfers this summer? GIANLUIGI DONNARUMMA'S dramatic Paris Saint-Germain exit has plenty in the Premier League on alert. But despite a season of chopping and changing in goal last term, Chelsea are not one of those. The Blues, who explored a cut-price deal for AC Milan's Mike Maignan earlier in the summer, have little interest in the Italian. Donnarumma shone in the Champions League last season as PSG claimed their first European crown but will leave before the end of the window. The European champions have signed Lucas Chevalier from Lille and Donnarumma was left out of their squad for the Uefa Super Cup against Tottenham. While Enzo Maresca had a headache in goal last season, the Blues feel they have turned a corner. Furthermore, while the Italian impressed in Europe, his stats across last season were below average in Ligue 1. Chelsea are also keen not to block the pathway for Belgian youngster Mike Penders. Penders, 20, is well thought of inside Stamford Bridge and has been sent to sister club Strasbourg on loan for the season. Advertisement Instead of pushing for a new goalkeeper, Maresca has now turned his attention to a central defender following Levi Colwill's ACL injury. Maresca said a new centre-back is now a "priority" this summer, which has led many to assume they would rival Liverpool for former Chelsea man Marc Guehi. The Blues have a 20 per cent sell-on clause for Guehi, meaning a deal between Chelsea and Palace would result in a lower fee for Maresca. However, the west Londoners are yet to explore a move for their academy graduate, who has one year left on his deal at Selhurst Park. Advertisement

Gianluigi Donnarumma's agent hits out at PSG as Man United and Man City pursue transfer
PSG manager Luis Enrique omitted Donnarumma from his squad for Wednesday night's Super League clash with Tottenham Hotspur, amid intense speculation over his future. Manchester clubs United and City are both interested in signing the Champions League winner. 'Donnarumma is out of the squad as it's my own decision, I am 100pc responsible,' Luis Enrique said. 'I want a different kind of goalkeeper and I made this decision. Gigio is one of the best keepers in the whole world'. Donnarumma issued his own statement thanking the fans for their support, adding: 'Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team's success. I am disappointed and disheartened.' And his agent, Enzo Raiola, told Sky Sports that PSG are demanding a transfer fee that leaves any transfer talks at risk of collapse. 'We are shocked by PSG, Raiola said. 'There's zero respect by the club after four years together. We will consider the situation also with our legal team. We will consider solutions now, maybe in Premier League there will be clubs able to pay what's needed. 'Paris Saint-Germain are asking for big money. They talk about respect, but it's only about the money.' French publication L'Equipe reports that City have agreed personal terms with Donnarumma, having held a conversation with manager Pep Guardiola. City's current No 1, Ederson, fell out of favour last season and has been linked with a move away from the Etihad.

'He has all the right qualities' - Romero replaces Son as Spurs captain
CRISTIAN ROMERO HAS been named as Tottenham's new captain after the departure of club legend Son Heung-min. Son, who had worn the armband for the last two seasons and lifted the Europa League in May as Spurs ended their 17-year wait for a trophy, joined LAFC earlier this month. Romero had acted as vice-captain for the previous two years and started the Europa League final win over Manchester United as skipper before Son came off the bench in the second half. Advertisement The 27-year-old Argentine will lead his side out when Tottenham take on European champions Paris Saint-Germain in the Uefa Super Cup on Wednesday. 'I had a good conversation with Cuti Romero and he's going to be our captain,' new Tottenham manager Thomas Frank told the official club website. 'He was very honoured and very happy about it. It's a big thing and should be to lead this wonderful club out on the pitch, not just for this Super Cup, but also throughout the season. 'I think he has all the right qualities. He leads from his behaviour on the pitch, driving the team forward in every way and outside the pitch he's always pushing the team.' Romero, who joined Spurs from Atalanta four years ago, was part of the Argentina side that won the 2022 World Cup. – © AFP 2025
