Heartbreak for Alas Men as Thailand completes reverse sweep in SEA V.League
The loss sent the Filipinos to a 1-2 card as they are now on the brink of finishing outside the podium anew while the multi-titled Thais improved to 2-1 to remain on track for four gold medals in a row.
The Philippines staged a comeback in Set 4 with Peng Taguibolos punishing Thailand's floor defense with back-to-back aces, 10-12, but Amornthep Khonan and Chaiwat Thungkham proved to be the one-two punch for the Thais as they soared to a 23-20 cushion.
Khonan sent Thais to set point before middle blocker Kissada Nilwasai completed a quick play that dragged the Philippines to another five-set duel.
The Filipinos kept it close early in the final frame with Leo Ordiales unloading a kill from the right side for a 5-6 deficit. Thailand, though, retaliated with three straight points capped by another opposite kill from Khonan, 9-5.
Alas could not solve the puzzle that was Thailand's net defense as the Leg 1 champions strung together two consecutive denials on Jade Disquitado and Ordiales for a 12-6 advantage.
Ordiales would still come up with another kill, but three straight errors from the Philippines allowed Thailand to complete the mighty reverse sweep.
The Philippines will look to end its campaign on a high note on Sunday against Vietnam while Thailand will take on host Indonesia for its final assignment.

SONA 2025: Marcos allows public to exercise on PSC track ovals
People enjoy strolling, jogging and biking along carless Roxas Boulevard from Padre Burgos Avenue to Quirino Avenue in Manila on Sunday, May 12, 2024. Having part of Roxas Boulevard go carless on Sundays will boost the city's environmental protection program and help the community be fit and healthy, the local government says. DANNY PATA President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos, Jr., in his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday, said the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) will open its track ovals as part of the government's efforts for a healthier citizenry. Marcos said this as he promoted a more active lifestyle for Filipinos. "Bilang pagsuporta dito, simula ngayon, bubuksan ng Philippine Sports Commission sa publiko ang kanilang mga track and field oval sa Pasig, Maynila, at Baguio, upang makapag-jogging na kayo nang libre," Marcos said. (In support of this initiative, starting today, the Philippine Sports Commission will open its track and field ovals in Pasig, Manila, and Baguio to the public, so you can jog for free.) Before this, the president mentioned that more people in their 20s and older are being classified as overweight. "Sa kabilang banda naman, nakikita natin ang sobrang pagtaas ng timbang ng ating mga kababayang edad dalawampu at pataas. Kaya, sikapin nating maging mas aktibo ang ating pamumuhay araw-araw," Marcos said. (On the other hand, we are seeing excessive weight gain among our countrymen aged 20 and above. So, let's try to be more active in our daily lives.) "Ipalaganap natin ang pagsasagawa ng mga palaro at mga paliga, mga fun runs at fun walks, pati na mga pa-aerobics at pa-zumba." (Let's promote the hosting of games and competitions, fun runs and fun walks, as well as aerobics and Zumba.) Marcos encouraged local government units to have open spaces where people can engage in physical activities. "Para sa mga LGU, buksan at gawing maaliwalas ang mga park at mga plaza, kung saan makakapag-ensayo ang ating mga mamamayan, bata man o matanda. Magpatupad tayo ng mga 'Car-Free Sundays,' tulad ng ginagawa sa ilang lungsod dito sa Metro Manila, sa Baguio, Cebu, Iloilo, at Davao,'' he said. (For the LGUs, open and make parks and plazas clear, where our citizens, young and old, can exercise. Let's implement ''Car-Free Sundays," as is being done in several cities here in Metro Manila, in Baguio, Cebu, Iloilo, and Davao.) Marcos also recognized Filipino athletes making their names on the global stage, such as Manny Pacquiao, Hidilyn Diaz, Carlos Yulo, and EJ Obiena. He also called PNP chief Police General Nicolas Torre III a "champion" after being declared winner by default in his supposed match against Acting Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte on Sunday. Torre won, as Duterte did not appear at the charity boxing event, which raised P300,000 in ticket sales alone. —VBL, GMA Integrated News

Marcos to launch new national sports dev't program
President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos, Jr. on Monday vowed to launch a new national sports development program for Filipinos in a bid to strengthen its grassroots program. "Magbubuhos tayo ng todo-suporta sa mga palaro at mga atleta sa buong bansa. Halimbawa, ang Palarong Pambansa, at ang Batang Pinoy Games na gaganapin sa General Santos City ngayong Oktubre," Marcos said in his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA). (We will give our full support to sports and athletes across the country. For example, the Palarong Pambansa and the Batang Pinoy Games, which will be held in General Santos City this October.) "Bubuo tayo ng bagong pambansang programa sa sports development. Uumpisahan natin ito sa paaralan pa lamang. Ibabalik natin ang mga sports clubs at magsasagawa tayo ng mga palaro at intrams sa lahat ng mga pampublikong paaralan." (We will create a new national sports development program. We will start it right in schools. We will bring back sports clubs, and we will hold games and intramurals in all public schools.) Marcos said the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation will make sure that support will be given to athletes and the country's sports program. The president also cited Filipino athletes making their names on the world stage, such as Manny Pacquiao, Hidilyn Diaz, and Carlos Yulo. Marcos also included Philippine National Police chief General Nicolas Torre III among the country's new 'champions' after winning by default on Sunday in his supposed match against Davao City acting mayor Sebastian "Baste" Duterte. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
