Yoel Romero gets date, opponent for BKFC debut
The former UFC title challenger is set to make his first appearance for BKFC against Theo Doukas at BKFC 80 on Sept. 12 at Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, Fla. The bout will be contested at heavyweight. The news of Romero's debut was announced by the promotion on Tuesday.
Romero, 48, signed with BKFC in July. He was coming off two KO finishes competing in Mike Perry's Dirty Boxing Championship – which is a striking competition with small gloves but doesn't involve any grappling or groundwork. "The Soldier of God" is mainly known for his 10-year run in the UFC where he fought for the middleweight title multiple times and cemented himself as one of the world's best. After his UFC departure, Romero had a short stint with Bellator and PFL, going 3-2.
Although now competing in bareknuckle boxing, Romero told MMA Junkie last month that he's still looking to continue his MMA career.
Romero's opponent, Doukas, will also be making his BKFC debut. Doukas has competed four times in MMA, going 2-2. His two victories have come by way of stoppage. He last competed in MMA in April 2024 and was submitted in the second round. He's also 1-0 in boxing.

Michael Bisping: Khamzat Chimaev won't change approach at UFC 319, 'it's just in his DNA'
Michael Bisping sees Khamzat Chimaev trying to storm out of the gates as he always does against Dricus Du Plessis. Chimaev (14-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) challenges middleweight champion Du Plessis (23-2 MMA, 9-0 UFC) in the UFC 319 main event on Aug. 16 from United Center in Chicago (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+). Chimaev has been advised by many to employ a slower approach in order to reserve his gas tank, but Bisping doesn't see that happening. In his most recent outing, Chimaev quickly took Robert Whittaker down and submitted him in Round 1 at UFC 308. "Khamzat Chimaev needs to have a secret weapon because in the past, he has slowed down," Bisping said on his YouTube channel. "I love that about Khamzat. He isn't going to change. This is the way that he fights. You can't change it; it's just in his DNA. The man is an absolute animal. He says he wants to kill everyone, but he does, and that's why we love him. That's why we tune in, and that's why this fight is going to be phenomenal. "Because will he be able to go out there and dominate Dricus Du Plessis? Because if he can, then I don't see anybody taking this belt off Khamzat Chimaev anytime soon." That being said, Bisping shares the opinion of the majority of pundits, which is that Du Plessis gets his hand raised if he's able to weather the early Chimaev storm. "I understand that Khamzat is going to be a very dangerous threat early. However, you can't be a marathon runner and a sprinter at the same time," Bisping said. "Khamzat Chimaev is a sprinter. Whereas other people have more of a style to go longer. Look at some of the most explosive fighters on the roster, they're amazing in the first round. "Conor McGregor didn't have the best gas tank going on for five rounds, but in the first round, holy sh*t, you were in a lot of trouble. ... So Khamzat Chimaev, I just think he's built a certain way. But if Dricus Du Plessis can drag him into the later rounds, I still think it favors Dricus. And the fact that Khamzat is a 2-to-1 favorite is crazy."

Dustin Poirier's charity gives away more than 1,200 backpacks to school students
Dustin Poirier is keeping busy after his UFC retirement. Longtime veteran lightweight Poirier retired from MMA competition in July following a unanimous decision loss to Max Holloway in their trilogy bout at UFC 319 in New Orleans. Poirier (30-10 MMA, 22-9 UFC) got a dream final fight scenario in his home state of Louisiana, and he received a heavy dosage of support throughout fight week and in the aftermath. Much of that support has been a product of Poirier having such close ties to his community, especially in Lafayette. "The Diamond" has been acknowledged with awards for his charitable deeds during his career, and things haven't changed after hanging up the gloves. On Tuesday, Poirier and his The Good Fight Foundation hosted its annual Back to School Supply Drive, with more than 1,200 backpacks containing school supplies and more were distributed to those in need. Check out a video recap of the event below (via Instagram): In the wake of his loss to Holloway at UFC 318, Poirier told MMA Junkie that continuing his work with The Good Fight Foundation would be a priority. He will have to find alternative means to shine a light on its efforts outside of what was produced by his fights, but the turn around for the Back to School Supply Drive showed him growth is still happening. "It's got bigger and bigger every year," Poirier said. "It wouldn't get done without the whole community."

Anthony Hernandez 'still not really sold' on Khamzat Chimaev before UFC 319
Anthony Hernandez thinks Khamzat Chimaev is still unproven heading into his first UFC title fight. Chimaev (14-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) challenges middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis (23-2 MMA, 9-0 UFC) in the UFC 319 headliner on Aug. 16 from United Center in Chicago (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+). Chimaev is the betting favorite heading into his fight with Du Plessis, who holds wins over former champions Robert Whittaker, Israel Adesanya and Sean Strickland. However, Hernandez isn't ready to buy into the undefeated phenom's hype just yet. "I think DDP is going to shock the world again," Hernandez told MMA Junkie. "He's a big, tough, awkward motherf*cker, and I'm still not really sold on Khamzat. I understand he's good, and he's dangerous, yada yada, but he's kind of fought all small guys who have come up. (Kamaru) Usman gave him a run for his money off the couch, so how does he do with somebody that's like a real 85'er?" Hernandez (14-2 MMA, 8-2 UFC) will look to enter the middleweight title picture when he takes on Roman Dolidze (15-3 MMA, 9-3) in Saturday's UFC on ESPN 72 (ESPN, ESPN+) main event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.
