Hickory FC advances to championship match
Channel 9's Dave Faherty spoke with players and coaches about the support from the community and why the players, who are not paid, do it.

'We love to play for you. It's been an absolute pleasure to represent this community,' Coach Carlos Rubio said. 'We know that with your support, whether it's in California or if it's here in Hickory, we know that we're gonna have that extra motivation to win that championship for you.'
The semi-pro team plays its home games at Moretz Stadium on the campus of Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory.
More than 6,000 fans were in attendance at their last game.
The hard work of the 26-player National Premier Soccer League team has paid off. They are just one game away from bringing Hickory a national championship.
Most of the players are college students from Europe and South America. They are provided housing and get travel expenses. Several of them say they play for the exposure and the love of the game.

Conforto seemed to get the message, though, as he enjoyed a strong series against the Padres that included a two-RBI game in the finale on Sunday. After that game, Conforto responded to Roberts with a note of gratitude for the continued opportunities, even if they came with a warning. "When you've got a manager who believes in you and keeps giving you opportunities, that's all you can ask for," Conforto told SportsNet LA after the game. "I'm starting to feel like myself again this series." Conforto added that Roberts told him privately that "he wanted to see a little bit more out of me," and it seems the tough love might have unlocked something for him. 2025-26 Rockets schedule: Most months grade out as easier than NBA average
In HoopsHype's month-by-month breakdown of each NBA team's 2025-26 schedule, only Houston's October and February opponents grade out as above average in difficulty. Heading into the NBA's 2025-26 regular season, the Houston Rockets appear to have one of the league's easiest schedules. As further evidence, our friends at HoopsHype broke down which parts of the season would appear to be tougher or easier for each team. The methodology is as follows: We used average over/under win projections from the most popular sportsbooks to build a month-by-month Strength of Schedule (SOS) for every NBA team in 2025-26. For each month, we calculated SOS as the simple average of that month's opponents' projected wins. We also tracked games scheduled per month, opponent total wins, and a normalized SOS Index where 100 equals the league-average opponent (the higher the number, the more difficult their schedule is). The complete data set can be viewed here. For the Rockets, the monthly breakdown goes as follows: So, out of seven months, only two are above the league average of 100 — and both by a very slight amount (100.7). But, there's more! October is an extremely limited sample with by far the fewest games of any month, since there are only three games due to the league's Oct. 21 start date. So, among the six months with a more substantive sample, only February — which includes a break of more than a week midway through it for the 2026 NBA All-Star Game — currently grades out as above average in difficulty. Coming off a season with a 52-30 record and the No. 2 mark in the Western Conference, it would appear that the Rockets — who acquired Kevin Durant this offseason and could have further growth and development by young stars Amen Thompson and Alperen Sengun — should have every opportunity (assuming health) to build on that in the upcoming 2025-26 campaign. 'Not the right time': Family detail as major news about Cameron Smith emerges
Kevin Walters has revealed Cameron Smith won't be part of his coaching staff when the Kangaroos travel to England for the end of year Ashes tour, with the NRL legend choosing to prioritise family and his media commitments instead. Smith was believed to be in the running for the Kangaroos role when Mal Meninga departed, but it went to Walters instead. There'd been speculation that Smith would become an assistant to Walters when Australia play three Tests in England after the completion of the NRL season. But the Kangaroos coach revealed over the weekend it won't be happening. 'I don't think Cameron will be involved,' Walters told . 'It's just not the right time for him to be involved. We'll let him do what he needs to do with his commentary and family and we'll get on with the tour. 'It's been a bit of a slow process (finalising support staff), but that's okay. I've spoken to (Justin Holbrook and Trent Barrett) but we're still contemplating what the makeup of the staff will be.' Cameron Smith puts family and commentary first Speaking last month, Smith admitted he'd have to weigh-up what was best for his young family and role with Channel 9 when making a potential move into coaching. "I love my role with the commentary team at the moment, I've got three young kids as well, I'm up in Bundaberg watching my eldest play netball (tonight)," he said on Channel 9. "But it's a wonderful opportunity to be able to coach our country. I was lucky enough to play for Kangaroos many, many times. To be able to coach such a wonderful team full of wonderful footballers would be a great opportunity." Tellingly, Smith said he understood why Brad Fittler withdrew from contention when the former NSW coach was believed to be the initial front-runner. Fittler also holds a role with Channel 9, which he's enjoying much more after stepping down as Blues coach in Origin. Kevin Walters responds to Payne Haas' defection Meanwhile, Walters has dismissed comments from Wayne Bennett that the ARL Commission made a 'ridiculous' call not to allow an NRL head-coach to take the Kangaroos job. And he also responded to news that Payne Haas has officially declared his allegiance to Samoa over Australia. 'The decision to not get someone from NRL land was made for a reason. It's not because they couldn't do it, it's just the workload," Walters said. "(Haas' decision) wasn't surprising to me. It's been on the table for probably 12 months. I'd like to have seen Payne playing for Australia, but I respect his decision. 'I said to him from the get-go when I got the job, 'Mate, whichever way you go, we've still got a strong relationship and that remains intact'. I'd like the opportunity to work with him again but he's chosen Samoa and I totally respect that."
