Air India to suspend Delhi-Washington services from September
The suspension of services between New Delhi and Washington, D.C., marks the latest setback for Air India, which is facing heightened regulatory scrutiny after a June crash in Ahmedabad killed 260 people.
The planned shortfall in Air India's fleet and continued closure of airspace over Pakistan have impacted the airline's long-haul operations, leading to longer flight routings and increased operational complexity, the carrier said.
The airline has undertaken a $400 million retrofit programme to upgrade its fleet.
It, however, sees the Pakistan airspace ban costing it $600 million over 12 months, Reuters had earlier reported.
India and Pakistan closed their respective airspaces to each other days after relations between the arch-rivals nosedived following a fatal attack on civilians in Indian Illegally Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), which also sparked the worst fighting between the neighbours in decades.
New Delhi has blamed Islamabad for the attack, accusations which Islamabad has denied.
Air India said its flyers will have options to choose flights to Washington, D.C., with layovers at New York, Newark, Chicago and San Francisco with the airline's interline partners Alaska Airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines.

European shares hit two-week high as investors gauge earnings, economic data
European shares edged higher to touch a two-week high on Thursday, as investors assessed corporate earnings and economic data. The pan-European STOXX 600 index rose 0.2%, as of 0710 GMT, while the UK's blue-chip FTSE 100 fell 0.2%. Britain's economy grew by a faster-than-expected 0.3% in the second quarter, official figures showed. Economists polled by Reuters, as well as the Bank of England, had forecast a 0.1% growth for the April-June period. Global stocks have rallied recently, driven by firming bets of a U.S. interest rate cut next month, leading to record highs on Wall Street. Among individual stocks, Embracer slumped 24.1% and was the top laggard on the STOXX 600 index after the gaming company's first-quarter operating profit missed estimates. Carlsberg fell 4.8% after the Danish brewer missed half-year profit and volume forecasts, and said it did not expect any improvement in the consumer environment for the remaining year.

India's July palm oil imports fall as soyoil jumps to 3-year high
India's palm oil imports declined in July following cancellations of import contracts, while soyoil shipments jumped to a three-year high, driven by competitive prices and the arrival of delayed June consignments, a leading trade body said. Lower palm oil imports by India, the world's biggest buyer of vegetable oils, could lead to a stock buildup in top producers Indonesia and Malaysia and weigh on benchmark Malaysian palm oil futures. India's palm oil imports in July fell 10.5% to 855,695 metric tons from June, the Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA) said on Thursday. Imports of soyoil increased 36.9% to 492,336 tons, the highest level in three years, and sunflower oil imports fell7.5% to 200,010 tons, the industry trade body said in a statement. Higher imports of soyoil lifted India's total edible oil imports in July by 1.1% to 1.55 million tons from a month earlier, the highest level since November, the SEA said. Palm oil imports fell in July because of the order cancellations, but they could rise in August as refiners are building stocks for the upcoming festival season, said a Mumbai-based trader. In India, edible oil demand, particularly for palm oil, typically rises during the festival season due to increased consumption of sweets and fried foods. India's July palm oil imports drop as soyoil shipments surge, dealers say A significant amount of soyoil is being diverted to substitute rapeseed oil, which is currently fetching a hefty premium over other edible oils, the dealer said. India'soyoil imports are poised to surge 60% year-on-year to a record 5.5 million tons in 2024/25, six dealers told Reuters earlier this week. The country buys palm oil mainly from Indonesia and Malaysia, while it imports soyoil and sunflower oil from Argentina, Brazil, Russia and Ukraine. India's drive to produce more ethanol is leading its farmers to switch away from growing oilseeds, undermining government efforts in the world's largest buyer of cooking oils to reduce costly imports.
