Who is Shadrach Ekiugbo? Liverpool's exciting centre-back sensation

Yahoo4 days ago
It's time to introduce the next generation at Liverpool and chiefly among them Shadrach Ekiugbo.
We've written about the exciting up and coming talent at the academy. The likes of Joshua Abe and Erik Farkas are both U16 players, but they have been promoted to the U18s this summer to continue their development at a higher level.

Behind them in the same age group is the talented Vincent Joseph, who has been catching the eye not just for Liverpool but for Germany's U15 and U16 side as well.
Because of his eligibility for England and Germany, Joseph has been likened to Jamal Musiala. An attacking midfielder, who can make really intelligent runs into the box and score goals, he too, just like Abe and Farkas are worth keeping an eye on.
The other player who should be on fans' radar is Ekiugbo.
Recently, Liverpool's U16 side travelled to Tokyo, at the same time as the first team. They travelled to play two exhibition matches against the J.League select.
Liverpool lost both games (1-0 and 2-0) but there were some promising individual performances. Among the stand-out performers in both games was Ekiugbo.
He's a different player to Joseph, Farkas and Abe. Primarily because he is not an attacker but a defender. What stood out about him in the games against the J.League select is his reading of the game and how cool and composed he was.
On top of that, he was brilliant on the ball, sending through balls and long passes that broke opposition lines. Ekiugbo was always looking to play the ball forward and instigate attacks.
So, it's clear that he's a promising defender. And one name to keep an eye on. It's also important to note that he's been at the academy for a long time.
He signed his first contract with the club as an U9 player, just like Abe and Joseph. As per the club's official website, Trent Alexander-Arnold was present on that special day.
Ekiugbo has progressed through the ranks impressively ever since. He's now also an England U15 international, making his debut earlier this year against Turkey.
In the two games, Ekiugbo caught the eye on both occasions. He played one half in each game and won four out of his six duels, winning eight out of 12 duels in total over the course of just over 90 minutes.
He also won two out of three aerial duels and showcased his passing ability completing 45 of his 53 attempted passes and completing two out of three dribble attempts, which are impressive numbers for a centre-back in just 90 minutes.
The next step for Ekiugbo is to break into the U18 side and earn that promotion just like Abe and Farkas have. He's got every chance if he continues to perform like he did at international level and in Tokyo.

Australia women's rugby team lose trump card Caslick for World Cup

Australia's women's Rugby World Cup hopes took a hit Monday with star sevens recruit Charlotte Caslick ruled out with an ankle injury. The Olympic gold medallist and Sevens World Cup-winner switched to the 15-a-side game this year to fulfil her dream of playing at the tournament in England later this month. She was named in Australia's squad last week despite the injury, but will now not travel. "We're really disappointed to lose Charlotte so close to the World Cup," said Australia coach Jo Yapp. "She has shown great commitment to the XVs program and Wallaroos this year." Utility back Caslick, a three-time Olympian, had ankle surgery last month and was hoping to be fit, but will instead focus on her rehabilitation. She was replaced by uncapped teenager Manua Moleka. Australia, whose best World Cup result was third in 2010, begin their campaign against Samoa on August 23 in Salford. mp/dh

Minute's silence for Diogo Jota cut short before match

A minute's silence in memory of Diogo Jota ahead of the Community Shield at Wembley had to be cut short due to shouting from a small number of Crystal Palace fans. Tributes were paid before kick-off to the former , 28, and his younger brother Andre Silva, who died in a car crash in Spain on 3 July. Reds fans, some of whom had booed the national anthem, paid respects with a rousing rendition of You'll Never Walk Alone as wreaths were laid on the pitch. But referee Chris Kavanagh cut the minute's silence short after just 20 seconds when it was disturbed by a minority of fans from the Palace end. The interruption was met with a strong response from the Liverpool end, while Eagles supporters also tried to silence those not observing the tribute. Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk said he was "disappointed" by the incident after his side lost on penalties after a 2-2 draw. "I don't know who did that but there was plenty trying to shush it down, but obviously that doesn't help it," he said. "But it is what it is. You can't control how many fans were here today? Was it 80,000 people? So, yeah, it is disappointing to hear that, but if that person or those persons can go home and be happy with themselves, then..." Read more from Sky News: Liverpool head coach Arne Slot played down the interruption, saying: "I don't think this was planned, or that this was the idea of the fan that made some noise. Maybe he wasn't aware of the fact that it was the minute of silence. "He was just still happy and tried to cheer for his team. And I think then the fans of Palace were trying to calm that person or those persons down, so I don't think he had a bad intention, the guy or people that made noise. "They tried to calm him down, but that was a bit noisy as well. And then our fans reacted: 'Hey, what's happening here?' "So I don't think there's a bad intention to it, because the fans of Crystal Palace and everywhere around the world have paid huge respect to Diogo and Andre and this was, I think, unlucky or, I can't find the right words, but I don't think there was a bad intention in it." Sky Sports News has approached Crystal Palace for comment.

Justin Rose goes on wild birdie run to snatch St. Jude Championship in potential Ryder Cup preview

We may have one Sunday Singles matchup already penciled in for the Ryder Cup. Justin Rose of England defeated reigning U.S. Open champion J.J. Spaun in a sudden-death playoff at the St. Jude Championship to kick off the FedEx Cup Playoffs. In order to get to the playoff, Rose birdied four of his final five holes - he also birdied two of the three playoff holes. After Rose birdied for the second time in the playoff, he celebrated with an emphatic fist pump. Spaun's seven-footer slid by the left edge, giving Rose the victory. The leaderboard had been stacked - Tommy Fleetwood held a share of the lead late, along wih Scottie Scheffler, but Fleetwood bogeyed 17 to miss the playoff by a stroke. Scheffler, too, finished tied for third at -15. Chants of "USA" rang through the Memphis crowd at TPC Southwind, as both golfers are now headed to Bethpage Black next month, clinching automatic bids. It will be Spaun's first Ryder Cup, while Rose will be in his seventh out of the last eight events. "An amazing last 90 minutes," Rose said. "I played unbelievable golf down the stretch. When I bring my best, I know I'm good enough to play and to compete, and to now win against the best players in the world. Very gratifying day for me." Spaun showed plenty of moxie on his own. He made a 20-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole to pull into a share of the lead and closed with a 65. He also made a 30-foot birdie putt on the second extra hole with Rose in tight. "I hung in there the best I could, and he beat me to the hole first. Just wasn't meant to be," said Spaun, who locked up a spot in his first Ryder Cup. The BMW Championship next week now features the top-50 in the FedEx Cup standings (Spaun and Rose rank third and fourth, respectively, behind Scheffler and Rory McIlroy).
