A two-star Michelin restaurant in South Korea is under investigation for violating the Food Sanitation Act by serving a dish topped with ants.
The fine dining restaurant in Seoul's Gangnam district is reportedly popular for its creative interpretations of Korean cuisine, with a sorbet dish topped with ants sold as a signature meal, according to The Korea Times.
South Korea does recognise some insects, including locusts, grasshoppers and mealworms, as edible, and boiled or steamed silkworm pupae are sold as a popular street food item known as beondegi, but ants are not classified as an edible ingredient.
A violation of the Food Sanitation Act is punishable by a fine of up to 50m won (£26,867) or a prison term of up to five years.
The food and drug safety ministry said on Thursday it had referred the restaurant's owner to prosecutors for using imported dried ants in a food item.
'To use ants as food, businesses must obtain temporary approval for standards and specifications under food safety regulations,' a ministry official pointed out. 'We have shared the results of this investigation with the relevant local government and requested administrative action.'
According to Korea JoongAng Daily, the ministry began investigating the unnamed restaurant after seeing blogs and social media posts with the dish in question.
The restaurant allegedly imported two types of ants from the US and Thailand using an express mail service between April 2021 and November 2024, local media reported. It sold around 12,000 dishes until December 2024, bringing in about 120 million won (£64,484).
The dish is quite popular with customers, South Korean media reported, with many calling it 'an upgraded experience'.
The restaurant's owner said they were unaware that ants weren't legally recognised as a food ingredient, according to The Korea Times.
Insects are considered a nutritious and sustainable food source in several parts of the world. In Thailand, fried crickets, ant eggs, grasshoppers, termites and silkworm pupae are popular street food items while Mexico sees grasshoppers, known as chapulines, and ant larvae, called escamoles, served in tacos and sauces.
Last year, the South Korean food ministry had to warn people against eat fried toothpicks made from starch in a shape resembling curly fries after it turned into a viral trend.
'Their safety as food has not been verified,' the ministry said in a post on X. 'Please do not eat.'
The toothpicks, commonly used in Korean restaurants to pick up finger foods, are made of sweet potato or corn starch. People on social media started to add the toothpicks to hot oil and add various seasonings including cheese.
However, local media reported they might include an ingredient called sorbitol and consuming too much could lead to vomiting and diarrhoea.

Customers in South Korea, Turkey, the United Kingdom, Italy and Sweden had previously been revealed as being impacted. While on Monday it was revealed Hong Kong had also been hit with more than 419,000 customers affected. Louis Vuitton confirmed clients' first and last name, gender, country, phone number, email address, postal address and date of birth had been exposed in the breach, in a client email seen by Customers' purchases and preferences data, along with passport numbers were also exposed in the breach. The high-end luxury brand, best known for its infamous monogram handbags, told affected clients that no financial information had been stolen. 'Dear Client, We regret to inform you that an unauthorised third party temporarily accessed our system and obtained some of your information,' the email read. 'On July 2, 2025, we became aware of a personal data breach resulting from the exfiltration of certain personal data of some of our clients following an unauthorised access to our system. The fashion brand assured customers that 'cybersecurity teams have taken care of the incident with the utmost diligence and attention.' Louis Vuitton confirmed measures were taken immediately to 'contain the incident' and blocked the unauthorised third party from accessing further data. The high-end label also warned those who had provided their details to be wary of any suspicious communication. Clients should remain vigilant of any unsolicited emails, phone calls or text messages. Louis Vuitton has told its customers there is currently no evidence their data has been misused, but warned fraud attempts may occur in the future. The email warned clients from revealing their Louis Vuitton password to anyone and clarified the company 'will never ask you to disclose it'. Louis Vuitton falls under the banner of French conglomerate LVMH. The luxury brand is one of several companies in the conglomerate, which also includes high-end labels Dior and Tiffany & Co. Both Dior and Tiffany & Co have been subject to similar data breaches in recent months.

South Korea 's defence ministry suspended the country's head of drone operations command over concerns that military drones were sent to North Korea illegally last year in preparations for former president Yoon Suk Yeol 's imposition of martial law. Major general Kim Yong-dae, who was serving as the commander of the unit, was relieved from his duties on Monday with suspension pending, the defence ministry said. Gen Kim was taken into custody on Friday without an arrest warrant regarding accusations that Mr Yoon ordered a covert drone operation into the North last year to inflame tension between the neighbours and justify his martial law decree.. Mr Yoon has denied the accusations. Gen Kim's charges include forging of official documents. Mr Yoon's brief, ill-fated imposition of martial law on 3 December led to his indictment on charges that he directed a rebellion, which is punishable by life imprisonment or death. Prompted by concerns he might destroy evidence, Mr Yoon's arrest could mark the start of a prolonged period in custody as investigators pursue additional charges. Investigators claim the former president issued direct orders to the drone commander in October last year, instructing him to dispatch drones to North Korea without alerting the defence ministry or the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The move was likely aimed at provoking military escalation from North Korea to allegedly justify the martial law imposition. In October last year, North Korea said the South had sent drones to scatter anti-North Korea leaflets over its capital city Pyongyang. HONG KONG, July 21 (Reuters) - Hong Kong's privacy watchdog said on Monday that it was investigating a data leak at Louis Vuitton affecting about 419,000 customers, just after a cyberattack on the luxury brand in South Korea in June. Leaked data included names, passport details, addresses and email addresses as well as phone numbers, shopping history and product preferences, Hong Kong's Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data said in an emailed statement. Louis Vuitton ( opens new tab submitted the data breach incident to the office on July 17. Its French head office found suspicious activities on its computer system on June 13 and then discovered on July 2 that it affected Hong Kong customers, the statement said. The office said it had launched an investigation into Louis Vuitton Hong Kong, including whether the incident involved delayed notification. No relevant complaints or inquiries have been received so far, it said. The incident comes after a systems breach at Louis Vuitton in Korea in June led to the leak of some customer data, including contact information, but it did not involve customers' financial information, the company said. Louis Vuitton did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
