Instagram caused battery drain on Android phones, confirms Google

Indian Express2 days ago

Instagram is undoubtedly one of the most used apps on Android devices. The Meta-owned social media platform, which has more than a billion users worldwide, is one of the most preferred ways to share images, videos and see what others are up to.
In the last few weeks, several Android smartphone users have been complaining that the Instagram app has been eating up a large amount of battery. As it turns out, the app was consuming power even when even it was not active in the background.
While the app developer did not say anything about the problem, Google is now advising Android users to update to the latest version of the app to fix the issue.
In a new support post, Google said that Instagram on Wednesday, May 28, is rolling out an 'updated app that should fix a battery drain issue on Android devices.' The tech giant is also advising users to head over to the Google Play Store to install Instagram build 382.0.0.49.84 to prevent battery drain. However, neither Google nor Instagram has clarified as to why Instagram was suddenly draining battery.
Some users who downgraded to an older version of the app to fix the battery drain problem said that their device heated up significantly, while others said that they temporarily switched to Instagram Lite and confirmed that the problem was caused by the Instagram app.
While Google did not specify which phones or Android versions were affected by the battery drain issue, it did say that all Pixel devices which received the May update were affected by the problem. Also, it is still unclear if Android phones from other manufacturers were affected by the Instagram battery drain issue, or if it is something else eating up their battery.
Recently, the US Federal Trade Commission accused Meta of acquiring potential rival platforms Instagram and WhatsApp to establish an illegal 'social network monopoly' of sorts.

"The Night We Met": Democratic Party's Tongue-In-Cheek Video On Elon Musk And Trump

In a viral twist to political commentary, the Democratic Party has released a satirical video on social media portraying the growing rift between Elon Musk and Donald Trump as a melodramatic breakup. Set to the hauntingly emotional track "The Night We Met" by Lord Huron, the video frames Musk's abrupt departure from the Trump administration as the end of a turbulent relationship, drawing laughter and headlines alike. Watch the video here: View this post on Instagram A post shared by Democrats (@thedemocrats) The timing of the video aligns with recent reports confirming Musk's exit from his role as a special government employee with the Department of Government Efficiency. Musk, who spearheaded a high-profile but contentious efficiency drive aimed at slashing federal spending, failed to achieve the sweeping reforms he had promised. According to a White House official, his "offboarding" began on Wednesday night, and the decision was made "at a senior staff level," Reuters reported. Musk's departure came swiftly and without fanfare - he did not meet with former President Trump before leaving. However, he took to his social media platform X to thank Trump for the opportunity to serve. As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending. The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) May 29, 2025 Despite the abrupt ending, Trump publicly praised Musk's efforts to cut government costs, though insiders suggest tensions had been mounting. Musk recently criticised Trump's major tax reform, calling it too costly-a move that reportedly upset senior White House figures. The Democratic Party's light-hearted yet pointed video captures both the political and personal drama surrounding Musk's government stint, offering a humorous take on what many see as an inevitable parting of ways.

Instagram Rolls Out New 3:4 Aspect Ratio For Photos For iOS And Android; How To Use It

Instagram New Aspect Ratio: Meta-owned platform is expanding its focus beyond Reels and Stories with a much-needed update for photographers. A photo and video uploading platform has officially introduced support for 3:4 aspect ratio photographs on its platform, allowing users to upload images without needing to crop them to fit Instagram's previously supported dimensions. The change aligns with the default setting found on most smartphone for the users. This new compatibility is available for both single-image uploads and carousel posts on Android and iOS. For years, users were limited to the app's signature 1:1 square format or the more recent 4:5 rectangle for photo posts. Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri has shared a new announcement via Threads that photos taken in the 3:4 format will now appear on the platform exactly as captured. The meta-owned platform is a win for casual users and professional photographers alike. How To Use New 3:4 Feature On Instagram Step 1: Open Instagram on your iPhone or Android device and tap the plus (+) icon to create a new post. Step 2: Select the photo you want to upload—make sure it's taken in the 3:4 format (portrait mode on most phones). Step 3: Instagram detects the aspect ratio automatically; no need to crop or resize the image. Step 4: Tap Next, apply filters or edit if needed, then hit Share—your 3:4 photo will display correctly in the feed. Adding further, Instagram keeps adding new tools to help users create better content. Recently, it launched a separate app called Edits that lets people easily work on their videos. Another new feature, Blend, creates a custom Reels feed inside your chats. It shows videos based on what you and a friend both enjoy. This feature is invite-only and aims to make content discovery more personal. After a year of testing, Blend is now available on both Android and iOS.

WhatsApp to End Support for Older iPhones and Android Phones from June 1: Is your Phone on the List

Starting June 1, WhatsApp will no longer function on a number of older iPhones and Android smartphones, as part of Meta's regular update cycle aimed at enhancing app performance and security. The company had initially planned to implement the change in May 2025 but delayed the rollout slightly, giving users extra time to prepare. This move affects devices running on outdated operating systems. Specifically, iPhones with iOS 15 or earlier and Android smartphones on Android 5.0 or below will lose access to the messaging app. According to WhatsApp, this step is essential as these legacy systems no longer receive security updates, leaving them vulnerable to threats. Here's a list of phones that will lose WhatsApp support starting June 1: iPhone 5s iPhone 6 iPhone 6 Plus iPhone 6s iPhone 6s Plus iPhone SE (1st Generation) Samsung Galaxy S4 Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Sony Xperia Z1 LG G2 Huawei Ascend P6 Moto G (1st Gen) Motorola Razr HD Moto E (2014) While these models are considered outdated, WhatsApp advises users to check their current software version before assuming they're affected. Devices running iOS 15.1 or newer, and Android 5.1 or later, will still be compatible with WhatsApp. If your device is eligible for a software update, installing it may keep WhatsApp running smoothly. For users whose phones are on the chopping block, WhatsApp recommends backing up chats before the support cutoff. This can be done by opening the app, navigating to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup, and following the prompts. Backing up your data to a Google account ensures an easier transition to a new phone without losing conversations or media. Security First: Why WhatsApp Is Pulling the Plug on Old Systems The primary reason behind ending support for these older systems is security. Devices that no longer receive regular updates from Apple or Android are more prone to cybersecurity threats. As WhatsApp continues to roll out new features aimed at protecting user data, maintaining compatibility with outdated systems becomes increasingly difficult and risky. 'Security is the main reason behind' the decision, the company said. Without frequent software patches, these older devices are at greater risk of being compromised — something WhatsApp is keen to avoid as it prioritizes user safety. Recent Privacy Enhancements on WhatsApp In recent months, WhatsApp has introduced a suite of privacy upgrades. These include new tools to prevent unauthorized copying of messages, images, or videos in both personal and group chats. Additionally, features like chat lock — which secures conversations with a password, fingerprint, or Face ID — and enhanced disappearing messages options have been implemented to give users more control over their data.
