Key Australian player ruled out of Champions Trophy 2025
Australia's National Selection Panel (NSP), in consultation with the men's cricket team's medical staff, has ruled out a key all-rounder from the 2025 Champions Trophy due to injury.
Mitchell Marsh will miss the tournament in Pakistan after his injury failed to respond to rehabilitation efforts.
Marsh has been struggling with lower back pain in recent weeks, which led to the NSP making the decision for him to undergo a longer period of rest and rehabilitation.
As part of his recovery plan, Marsh will now take time off to focus on his rehabilitation before making his return to play.
The NSP will meet soon to decide on a replacement for Marsh in the squad for the Champions Trophy. The final squads for the tournament must be submitted before Wednesday, February 12.
ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is set to commence on February 19, with host and defending champions Pakistan taking on New Zealand in the opening match at Karachi's National Bank Stadium.

Mitchell Marsh, Australia's T20I captain, revealed on Friday that himself and swashbuckling opener and ICC No.2 ranked T20I batter Travis Head will remain the team's top two until the marquee ICC Men's T20 World Cup next year. Fresh off a 5-0 whitewash of West Indies in the T20I series last month, Australia will welcome back a few familiar faces – including Travis Head – for their upcoming three-match series against South Africa, starting Sunday, 10 August. "It'll be myself and Heady [Travis Head] up the top for the foreseeable future," Marsh told reporters. "Obviously, we've played a lot together, (we've) got a great relationship, so (we'll) start there." While Marsh and Head are yet to open together in T20Is, they boast an outstanding record as an ODI pairing, pitching in with 282 runs from just five innings at a superb 70.50 average. In total, Marsh and Head's record as a pair reads 504 runs from 14 innings at a 38.76-run average, with one century and three half-century stands. Marsh's shift to No.3 ahead of the 2021 T20 World Cup was hailed widely, with the right-hand batter amassing 185 runs from five outings, culminating in a Player of the Final performance as Australia lifted the trophy for the first time. Marsh was also tasked with leading Australia at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 last year, where Australia were knocked out in the Super Eights, with the batter making 125 runs across seven outings. Now still at the helm, the 33-year-old has embraced the opening role after doing so in all five matches against the West Indies last month, albeit having a poor outing with only 81 runs coming across five games. Since David Warner's retirement following last year's T20 World Cup in the Caribbean, Australia have tried and tested multiple openers, including Matt Short, Glenn Maxwell and Jake Fraser-McGurk. But the Marsh-Head combination now looks set in stone as the team builds towards the flagship Men's T20I tournament next year. Marsh also addressed the batting order of big-hitter Tim David, whose 37-ball century in the third T20I against West Indies – the fastest by an Australian – came after an early arrival at the crease. "We've spoken about it. We saw that in the Caribbean, that he came in earlier than he would normally," Marsh added. "His skill set is made for that. The more balls he faces, hopefully the more games he wins us." Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Naqvi lauded the Green Shirts for their spirited performance throughout the series. "Congratulations Team Pakistan on a fantastic T20 series win against West Indies in the USA! Great teamwork, determination, and spirit on display," he wrote. The PCB chairman emphasised that the players had made the nation proud by excelling on the international stage and expressed confidence in the team's ability to maintain its winning momentum. "Proud of our boys for making the nation proud on international soil. Keep the momentum going," Naqvi added. For the unversed, Pakistan secured a 2-1 victory in the three-match T20I series against West Indies by winning the third and final encounter by 13 runs on Monday at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground. Zaman ruled out Pakistan opener Fakhar Zaman has been ruled out of the third T20I and the subsequent three-match ODI series against West Indies after sustaining a left hamstring strain during the second T20I. The injury occurred in the 19th over while Fakhar was chasing a ball in the outfield. Following a medical assessment, it was diagnosed as a mild strain. The team's medical staff provided immediate treatment and initial management. The opening batter is scheduled to return to Pakistan on the evening of August 4, where he will undergo rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore under the supervision of the PCB medical team. The left-handed batter has struggled with form in recent outings, registering scores of 1, 44, and 8 in three matches against Bangladesh, followed by 28 and 20 in the first two T20Is against West Indies. This is not Fakhar's first injury setback in recent times. He suffered an oblique injury during Pakistan's ICC Champions Trophy 2025 opener earlier this year and was subsequently ruled out of the tournament. Despite the discomfort, Fakhar continued to bat and managed 24 runs off 41 balls before being dismissed by New Zealand's Michael Bracewell. The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025 has approved Imam-ul-Haq as Fakhar Zaman's replacement in Pakistan's squad. Fakhar was also left out of both the ODI and T20I squads for the New Zealand series held in April this year.

Photo: AFP Cricket Australia announced its T20I and ODI squads for the upcoming home series against South Africa on Wednesday. The series will begin with a three-match T20I series on August 10, followed by three ODIs in northern Australia. Young all-rounder Mitchell Owen has received his maiden ODI call-up after a strong start in the T20 format against the West Indies earlier this year. The 23-year-old impressed with 125 runs at a strike rate of 192.30 in the Caribbean series, which included a half-century on debut in Jamaica. Owen also underlined his limited overs credentials last season when he smashed 149 off just 69 deliveries for Tasmania in the One-Day Cup. Fast bowler Lance Morris has been recalled to the 50-over squad after his last appearance against Pakistan in November. The Australia pacer has battled back injuries in recent seasons, has been carefully managed by the selectors but remains highly regarded as an all-format prospect. Morris claimed 13 wickets at 20.84 in last season's Sheffield Shield and 15 wickets in eight outings for Perth Scorchers in the BBL. While Marnus Labuschagne has retained his place in the ODI squad despite missing out on selection for the Test series against the West Indies. Jake Fraser-McGurk, Aaron Hardie, Cooper Connolly and Xavier Bartlett have been left out of the T20I squad, although Bartlett has earned a place in the ODIs. Fraser-McGurk played only one match after joining the squad as a late replacement, while Connolly struggled with scores of 13 and zero across his two innings. Hardie produced two useful knocks, including helping secure victory in the final match of the West Indies series. From the ODI squad that last featured in the Champions Trophy in March, Fraser-McGurk, Connolly, Hardie, Sean Abbott and Tanveer Sangha have all been omitted, along with injured paceman Spencer Johnson. The matches against South Africa will be Australia's first in the format since the retirements of Steven Smith and Glenn Maxwell from one-day cricket. The series between Australia and South Africa will begin with the T20Is, with the first two matches scheduled in Darwin on August 10 and 12, followed by the final game in Cairns on August 16. The ODI series will start on August 19, with the opening match in Cairns, before concluding with two games in Mackay on August 22 and 24.
