NCERT's new Class 8 history: 'Darker period' of Mughals, sultans introduced

India Today16-07-2025
In this episode of 5Live, the focus is on the death of a 20-year-old student in Balasore, Odisha, which has sparked massive outrage. The student, who died by self-immolation after suffering 96% burns, had filed multiple complaints of sexual harassment against a professor at Akhir Mohan University. Her pleas for justice to the college principal and other authorities were repeatedly ignored. Her father has called the death a murder, stating, 'When my daughter died, he didn't die, he was killed.' The incident has led to widespread protests across Odisha, with opposition parties calling for a Bandh. Following the outcry, the accused professor and the college principal have been arrested. The program also covers other major news, including Mamata Banerjee's 'Bengali pride' march and the escalating war of words between the government and the opposition over India's foreign policy. Additionally, significant changes to NCERT's Class 8 social science textbooks are discussed, detailing religious intolerance during the Mughal period. The revisions describe rulers like Babur as brutal and note Aurangzeb's demolition of temples, while adding a disclaimer that 'no one should be held responsible today for events of the past.' The programme also covers the escalating language war in Maharashtra, where Minister Nitish Rane suggested Azaan be recited in Marathi in Madrasas. In another major development, the alleged mastermind of a conversion racket, Changur Baba, has given his first reaction, stating, 'I am innocent. I don't know anything.' Further reports include the demolition of Satyajit Ray's ancestral home in Bangladesh and Uttarakhand's move to include the Bhagavad Gita and Ramayana in the school syllabus.

Mamata Banerjee Condemns Alleged Attack On Bengali Migrants In Protest Rally

Jhargram: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday led a massive protest rally in Jhargram, condemning the alleged attacks on Bengali-speaking migrants outside the state. The rally, themed around the narrative that the Bengali language and identity "will never be silenced," was led by the TMC boss. Banerjee walked nearly 3 km through the tribal heartland, joined by TMC leaders, cultural personalities, and citizens waving placards that read 'Banglar Apoman Sojjyo Hobe Na' (Insult to Bengal won't be tolerated) and 'Bangla Amar Ma' (Bengal, my mother). The protest comes in the wake of alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking migrants in various parts of the country. Language row: SFI sends ‘Barnaparichay', ‘Sahaj Path' to Malviya

Kolkata: SFI, the students' wing of CPM , on Wednesday sent copies of 'Barnaparichay' and 'Sahaj Path' to Bengal BJP's co-in-charge in the state, Amit Malviya, following his comments on Bangla. "There is an attempt to incite hatred against the Bengali speakers across India. Amit Malviya's argument defending the Delhi Police statement clearly shows that he does not have any idea of the culture and language in the state. Bengal has been a melting pot for people from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. That is the identity of Bengal," said SFI's state secretary Debanjan Dey, adding, "We also asked him to read the basic textbooks written in Bangla. " Malviya had posted on X: "There is, in fact, no language called 'Bengali' that neatly covers all these variants. 'Bengali' denotes ethnicity, not linguistic uniformity." The SFI also criticised TMC for trying to gain political mileage. "This binary is being created to polarise the population in the state. If they fail to learn from this, we will send flight tickets to BJP netas and ask them to visit the Andaman Cellular Jail. Hundreds of revolutionaries from Bengal were tortured there while BJP's ideologue Savarkar escaped from there." Samik: TMC hurting workers by pushing them out of Bengal

Kolkata: As Trinamool stepped up the heat against BJP over torture of Bengali-speaking migrants, state BJP president Samik Bhattacharya claimed that it was TMC that was hurting migrant labourers by pushing them to work outside Bengal. "It is Trinamool which is responsible for the infiltration of Bangladeshis and Rohingyas, forcing the poor migrants out," Bhattacharya claimed while speaking to reporters outside Parliament. "BJP is a party of Bengal, of Bengalis and Indians. This is not a party of Rohingyas or Bangladeshi jihadis. We will not let West Bengal be West Bangladesh," he added. Squarely blaming Trinamool for engineering a demographic shift in the districts bordering Bangladesh, Bhattacharya alleged, "Who has poisoned Bengal? Who has shamed Bengal? It is Trinamool. In Darivit, two students were killed demanding Bengali language teachers instead of Urdu. What has the Bengal govt done?" Referring to the TMC protests, he said, "Everyone has the right to protest, but it does not hide what people see in open daylight.
