Saudi Arabia's 'Sleeping Prince' dies after 20 years in coma

Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal Al Saud, often referred to as Saudi Arabia's 'Sleeping Prince,' has died after spending nearly two decades in a coma. He was 36 years old.
His father, Prince Khaled, announced the death in a social media post on July 19.
'With hearts full of faith in Allah's decree and destiny, and with profound sadness and sorrow, we mourn our beloved son Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, may Allah have mercy on him, who passed away to Allah's mercy today,' he wrote in Arabic on X (formerly Twitter).

The funeral prayer will be held in Riyadh on Sunday, July 20, 2025.
Prince Al-Waleed, born in April 1990, was involved in a serious car accident in 2005 while studying in London. At just 15 years old, he sustained severe brain injuries and internal bleeding that left him in a coma.
He was later transferred to King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, where he spent the next 20 years under intensive medical supervision and life support. Despite his condition, Prince Khaled consistently rejected calls to withdraw life support.
The Global Imams Council also extended its sympathies to the Saudi Royal Family and praised the patience of Prince Khaled and his household, calling it a reflection of strong faith.
'As we share the grief of the Royal Family on this solemn occasion, we recall with deep respect the patience and steadfastness demonstrated by his father, Prince Khaled bin Talal, and his family a testament to their profound faith in the will and decree of Allah,' the statement read.
