Natalie Nakase is still learning about her new WNBA expansion team
New WNBA team the Golden State Valkyries' coach Natalie Nakase told For The Win's Meghan Hall that the whole coaching staff is learning as they go.
Sports Seriously
The WNBA's 2025 season tipped off Friday, but the league's reigning champions aren't going to be in action until Saturday.
The New York Liberty will open their title defense with an anticipated clash against the Las Vegas Aces.
The Liberty are once again expected to be one of the WNBA's best teams in 2025. Led by Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones, New York sported an efficient offense and the second-best rebounding team in the league. They are expected to continue to thrive in both areas area, while new arrival Natasha Cloud will help replace Courtney Vandersloot and some punch to New York's defense.
Meanwhile, the Aces will continue to rely on A'ja Wilson, who averaged 26.9 points, 11.9 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game last season while winning her third MVP award. Las Vegas acquired six-time All-Star Jewell Loyd to play alongside her and Jackie Young in 2025, which should provide the team extra scoring depth.
Here's how to watch the early season battle of the WNBA contenders on Saturday.
The New York Liberty put together an outstanding second quarter, outscoring the Las Vegas Aces 28-13 to take a 14-point lead into the locker room. It could have been worse for the Aces, only for Breanna Stewart's potential buzzer-beater three being ruled out on replay as the half came to a close.
Stewart leads the Liberty with 13 points, while Natasha Cloud (10 points, three assists) is showing out in her first game since joining the team this offseason. For Las Vegas, A'ja Wilson's 13 points have been a bright spot, but the Liberty have dominated on the glass to take charge of the game.
With A'ja Wilson in dominant form, Las Vegas holds a 20-19 lead at the end of the first quarter. The 2024 MVP already has 11 points in this one, along with four rebounds.
A more balanced Liberty have gotten points from all over, with Nyara Sabally leading the team with six despite playing just three minutes off the bench.
The Las Vegas Aces and New York Liberty have tipped off at Barclays Center, with both teams officially off and running in the 2025 WNBA season.
The Las Vegas Aces vs. New York Liberty game will tip off at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday, May 17 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Angels slugger Mike Trout mashes first home run since returning from injury
Mike Trout is back in the lineup for the Los Angeles Angels and seeing him do what he does best — hitting home runs — is a welcome sight for the team's fans. Trout hit his first homer since returning to the lineup after a 10-day injury list stint due to his left knee. The three-time MVP launched a three-run shot against the Boston Red Sox in Game 1 of the Angels' series at Fenway Park, his first since April 25. It's Trout's ninth dinger on the season, and it comes with the Angels after having dropped two of three over the weekend against the Cleveland Guardians. But the positive development was seeing Trout back in the lineup for both the Friday and Saturday games in Cleveland before sitting out the Sunday finale. Prior to going on the IL on April 30, Trout had been hitting a career-low .179. Since his return, he's had six hits in the four games he's played — including Monday's 454-ft homer. The Angels are bringing their star hitter back slowly. Trout has yet to play in right field since coming back from the IL and is expected to be the designated hitter for the time being. Once the team returns to Anaheim, manager Ron Washington will assess when the 11-time All-Star go back to playing defense. The Angels were able to keep pace with Trout sidelined, which included an eight-game winning streak composed of series sweeps of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Athletics. But they've stumbled since then by dropping seven of eight. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
