26th Kargil Vijay Diwas Observed With Fervour In Ladakh's Drass
J&K LG, Manoj Sinha said, while paying tributes to the Kargil conflict martyrs, "On Kargil Vijay Diwas, I bow to our martyrs and salute their bravery, courage and sacrifice. Our heroes fought in the most inhospitable terrain in the world and conquered the enemy. The gallantry, valour and supreme sacrifice of our soldiers will inspire the generations to come."
Army's Udhampur headquartered Northern Command remembered its brave hearts by posting on X, "As India commemorates the 26th #KargilVijayDiwas, the #NorthernCommand paid tribute to the unwavering bravery of our soldiers through a series of poignant events."
The Northern Command added that from cycling expeditions to marathons, cricket tournaments to Veer Gatha initiatives and adventurous treks to battle peaks. Every gesture honours the indomitable spirit of our armed forces.
"Special ceremonies were held to felicitate the Next of Kin of Kargil heroes killed in action, acknowledging their ultimate sacrifice. These events serve as a testament to the courage, resilience, and patriotism that define our nation's heroes," it said.
Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, MoS Defence, Sanjay Seth and the Army Chief General, Upendra Dwivedi, attended Kargil Vijay Diwas' celebrations at Drass on Saturday.
Three projects will be launched today by the army in the Kargil district, including a portal where citizens can pay 'e-shradhanjali' to martyrs.
Both union ministers reached Kargil town on Friday and attended cultural and other functions.
On this day in 1999, the army announced the successful culmination of 'Operation Vijay', declaring victory after a nearly three-month-long battle.
The Union Sports Minister led a 'padyatra' featuring over 1,000 youth volunteers, veterans, armed forces personnel, families of fallen soldiers, and civil society members in Drass today.
The 1.5 kilometre long Padyatra commenced at 7:00 am from the grounds of Himabass Public High School, Drass and concluded at the grounds of Government Higher Secondary School, Bhimbet.
War veterans, families of war heroes and many dignitaries are attending today's celebrations in Drass town.
Indus Viewpoint is the third project being inaugurated today. This will allow visitors to go up to the LoC in the Batalik sector. The project will give an idea to the visitors about the conditions in which soldiers serve, the difficulties and constant dangers they face on a day-to-day basis to ensure that the nation remains safe.
Located 10,000 feet above sea level, Batalik was the focal point of the Kargil war due to its strategic location between Kargil, Leh and Baltistan.
The small village in the Indus River valley has now become a major tourist attraction.

SC Justice Surya Kant inaugurates legal aid centre for armed forces families
Supreme Court Justice Surya Kant virtually inaugurated a specialised legal aid centre for armed forces personnel and their families on Monday, emphasising that those who fight for the country deserve 'justice and honour' while their families merit 'justice with dignity.' The program was organised by the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh in Srinagar. Under the NALSA Veer Parivar Sahayata Yojana, the inauguration of a dedicated legal aid centre for armed forces took place at the Sainik Welfare Department in Ghorpadi, coinciding with Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrations. The initiative was a collaborative effort between the National Legal Services Authority, Maharashtra State Legal Services Authority, District Legal Services Authority, Pune and the Maharashtra State Soldier Welfare Department. Speaking at the event, Pune Divisional Commissioner Dr. Chandrakant Pulkundwar said, 'The Legal Aid Centre is a step to honour soldiers and their families. It is an excellent example of administration, judiciary and social commitment working together.' He emphasised that providing timely and free legal aid with dignity is essential for military personnel and their dependents. Justice Mahendra K. Mahajan, principal district and sessions judge, Pune, said that around 50 percent of citizens are unaware of available legal aid schemes and government benefits. 'This especially includes the families of military officers and employees,' he said. 'Our soldiers do not retreat under any circumstances; they always stand to protect the country. Protecting them and their families is the true form of justice.' Secretary of Pune District Legal Services Authority Sonal Patil said, 'A soldier fights on the battlefield, but after him, his family's fight for justice begins. It is our duty to stand by them in that fight.' The centre will provide legal services, including advice on criminal, civil, service, and pension matters, assistance with accident and insurance compensation cases, guidance on property disputes, information about government schemes, free legal representation, and counselling services.

Chief of Northern Command Felicitates Troops For Successful Op Mahadev
Srinagar: Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the Northern Command, visited the General Area of Dachigam in Kashmir to commend troops for their outstanding performance in the recently concluded Operation Mahadev. According to a release, Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma complimented and felicitate troops for their resilient action, as also swift and successful execution of Operation Mahadev in Lidwas on Jul 28, where three hardcore terrorists were neutralised. Three terrorists were neutralised in an intense firefight with security forces in the Harwan area near Dachigam National Park of Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian Army said on Monday. The operation, Mahadev, took place in the general area of Lidwas, the Chinar Corps of the Indian Army said. On Tuesday, during the Lok Sabha session, Union Home Minister Amit Shah also confirmed that three terrorists who were involved in the killing of civilians were eliminated by the security forces during Operation Mahadev. Shah said that this as he began his address in Lok Sabha amid the ongoing debate on Operation Sindoor and informed that those who killed our citizens in the ghastly Pahalgam terror attack have been killed. "In a joint Operation Mahadev, the Indian Army, CRPF, and J&K Police have neutralised three terrorists who were involved in the Pahalgam terror attack," Shah said while addressing the lower house. Meanwhile, families of the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack have expressed gratitude to the Indian Army following the elimination of three terrorists involved in the incident during Operation Mahadev. Syeed Sabzar Shah, cousin of the dead Adil Hussain, lauded the Indian Army and said the operation had avenged the brutal attack. He also recalled Hussain's act of bravery during the attack. "We felt very proud that our brother did such a brave deed. If he wanted, he could have run away and saved his life, but till the end, he stood there and saved the lives of the tourists. He did not see any caste or religion; he showed humanity," Sabzar told ANI. Thanking the Indian Army, he added, "We are very proud of the Indian army, as the three terrorists were killed yesterday. After over 40 years, India issues tender for Sawalkote project as Indus treaty remains in abeyance
SRINAGAR: India, taking advantage of its keeping in abeyance the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan, floated on Wednesday international tenders for construction of the Sawalkote Hydroelectric Project on the Chenab river a little over 40 years after it was conceived. The project, designated by govt as one of national importance, had suffered long delays due to objections from Pakistan under the Indus Waters Treaty framework as well as multiple regulatory and administrative hurdles, including compensation issues involving 13 affected villages, relocation of the Army transit camp in Ramban, and forest land within the project area requiring clearances and compensation under environmental regulations. T he National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) initiated on Wednesday the tendering process for the power project, located near Sidhu village in J&K's Ramban district. The last date for submission of online bids is Sept 10. It invited international bids on a competitive bidding basis for planning, design, and engineering works for the 1,856 MW project. Construction of the Sawalkote project is a major strategic development aimed at optimising India's use of Indus waters while the treaty with Pakistan remains in abeyance. The 1960 treaty had given India control of the Beas, Ravi and Sutlej rivers, and Pakistan the Indus, Chenab and Jhelum, with India being allowed a portion of waters from the 'western rivers (those under Pakistan control)' for certain uses. J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah, who is also power minister, told TOI the project is of great significance and that he hoped it would finally take off. 'The project was originally conceived in the 1980s, but it was shelved after some time. In 1996, Dr Farooq Abdullah attempted to revive it with the help of a Norwegian consortium but that effort didn't succeed. Later, during my previous tenure, we tried to initiate the project again, but it encountered certain hurdles,' Omar said, adding that it was completely shelved during the tenure of the Mufti Mohammad Sayeed govt. Ramban MLA Arjun Singh Raju was the first to announce Wednesday's development, calling it a landmark moment. 'Sawalkote power project is the biggest in the country. Once completed, it will benefit not just Jammu and Kashmir, but the entire nation. I think it is a historical moment,' he said, adding, 'And the credit goes to chief minister Omar Abdullah, who fought relentlessly for this project,' he added. The run-of-river project is estimated to cost Rs 22,704.8 crore and will be developed in two stages. 'All issues have now been sorted out,' Raju said, adding that NHPC has also secured relaxation on the water cess, which had earlier delayed progress. Earlier this month, the Forest Advisory Committee (FAC) granted 'in-principle' approval for the diversion of 847 hectares of forest land for the construction of the Sawalkote project. Conceived in 1984, the Sawalkote project, sources said it was given to NHPC in 1985. In 1997 it was given back to Jammu Kashmir State Power Development Corporation (JKSPDC) for execution. Sources said approximately Rs 430 crore was spent by JKSPDC on 'enabling infrastructure' around the project. But no work had started on the main project. Then, in 2021, an MoU was signed with NHPC to revive and implement the project under the build-own-operate-transfer model.
