'It's Liverpool or nothing for Guehi' - have your say on centre-back targets

Ultimately for Marc Guehi, it is Liverpool or nothing this is not an ideal scenario for Crystal Palace, who were hoping for an auction. But the alternative is losing him for nothing next summer - when he may end up joining the Reds on a free transfer Palace ideally want £40m for Guehi, it may be that they get a deal worth about £35m plus south London club have reluctantly engaged in talks to sell their captain and if all goes to plan, an agreement should follow in the coming chairman Steve Parish will sanction Guehi's sale through gritted would like the defender to stay and sign a new deal, but the likelihood of that is virtually to Liverpool - or losing Guehi for nothing - now appear to be Palace's only it be two in for Liverpool? Liverpool's Alexander Isak transfer would break record for most expensive club spend EVER

Liverpool remain keen on Alexander Isak but any deal for the Newcastle striker would need to break transfer records and mean the Reds have spent more than any club in history across a single window Liverpool will eclipse the most expensive summer spend by any club in history if they secure a move for Alexander Isak - which would see their outlay eclipse the £400million mark. ‌ Any move for the Newcastle forward would also likely see them break the British transfer record for the second time in a matter of months having done so when they signed Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen - landing the German for £116m. ‌ Arne Slot has been aggressive in pursuing new talent in an effort to keep Liverpool at the summit of English football. After their Premier League triumph the Merseyside have bolstered their frontline and their backline. Jeremie Frimpong, like Wirtz, swapped Leverkusen for Liverpool in a deal worth £29.5m. ‌ Milos Kerkez's impressive season saw him land a move from Bournemouth for £40m and Liverpool have also addressed their No 9 problem with the signing of Hugo Ekitike. He joined from Frankfurt in a £79m deal. It all means Liverpool's spending sits at £289m - once Giorgi Mamardashvili's signing is also factored in - with Isak potentially increasing that total exponentially. That would almost certainly see the Reds surpass Chelsea's barely believable spend of £404m two summers ago that saw them add the likes of Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia. Liverpool have gone from spending almost nothing last summer to potentially breaking records this summer. Slot landed the Premier League title in his first campaign, a major achievement, but some criticised the manner of their cups exits and Champions League loss to PSG. The Dutch manager has been keen to play down their spend, citing the money they've recouped and the gaps they've had to fill. Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez have both left for more than £100m, which has left holes in the frontline, and Jarell Quansah has also sought pastures new. Quansah's departure means the champions are also looking at new central defenders, with talks underway to sign Crystal Palace skipper Marc Guehi and youngster Giovanni Leoni. ‌ Liverpool's summer spending does increase competition, which wasn't always the case last year with Slot using a very small pool of players to start games. Only 10 outfield players started a minimum of 25 games with others - the likes of Harvey Elliott - largely resigned to substitute roles. The potential addition of Isak, who Newcastle value in the region of £150m, but maintain won't be sold, would likely leave new signing Ekitike having to find a new position or drop out of the starting XI all together. Carragher's issue Jamie Carragher is among those to voice concern with the club's recruitment drive and claimed it "doesn't feel like the Liverpool way of doing things". The Reds have previously seen the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City attack the market, whilst they have attempted to take a slightly more measured approach. ‌ But now their former player turned pundit is stunned - and not a fan of the idea that they would spend nearly £80m on a striker only to have him as a back-up to a more expensive signing. He said on the Overlap: 'He (Isak) will be an amazing signing but from a fan's point of view for myself, I don't want Liverpool to spend £150m on Isak. There's something about Liverpool buying another striker (Ekitike), and he's backup. Something about it doesn't feel right to me. ‌ 'I look at Isak, and he's obviously thrown his toys out the pram once Arsenal signed a striker and Liverpool signed a striker. It feels a bit messy to me now. "For me, when I think of Liverpool, it doesn't look really planned. I don't think the plan is to buy a striker for £80M, and then be looking to buy another one for £120m. In terms of what Liverpool have done in the summer by bringing in players, they've spent a lot of money and it doesn't feel like the Liverpool way of doing things so much.'

Ruben Amorim urged to abandon Man Utd transfer and play 'insanely exciting' wonderkid

Manchester United have spent more than £200million on three forwards during the summer transfer window and Rio Ferdinand wouldn't approve of adding another striker - even on a free Rio Ferdinand has told Manchester United to forget about signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin and put their faith in wonderkid Chido Obi. Calvert-Lewin, 28, is currently without a club after his contract with Everton expired in June. ‌ The striker has been linked with a free transfer to Old Trafford as well as Newcastle and Leeds, with aspirations to rediscover his best form and play for England at the World Cup next summer. United have, of course, already signed a new striker during the summer transfer window, winning the race for RB Leipzig hotshot Benjamin Sesko in a £74million deal. ‌ But unlike Calvert-Lewin, Sesko has no Premier League experience and it's been speculated that the Red Devils are considering making the ex-Everton star a contract offer. It's safe to say that Ferdinand would be against the move, as he wants to see 17-year-old Obi given minutes instead. ‌ When it was put to the former United defender that Calvert-Lewin could be a target for the Red Devils, Ferdinand replied on his YouTube channel: "Dominic Calvert-Lewin? What are you chatting about, bruv? "Calvert-Lewin can't stay fit. No. Why would we bring him in to this club? This club is built on the academy and we've got Chido Obi sitting there. "Play him if you just need someone for a few games rather than someone who's older and can't stay fit. Sign Calvert-Lewin? On what grounds? No, I'm sorry, I disagree massively, I disagree massively. What message does that send to the rest of the Premier League or more importantly to your squad?" ‌ Obi was given his debut by United boss Ruben Amorim in February and made five further appearances before the end of last season. The Dane rose to prominence after scoring an incredible 32 goals in just 18 games for Arsenal's under-18 side before joining the Red Devils for a nominal fee last year. Denmark manager Brian Riemer recently labelled Obi 'insanely exciting', telling Viaplay, as quoted by Tipsbladet: "He is in a place now where it is insanely exciting, but he has to make his breakthrough. That is the next step he has to focus on: breaking through at Manchester United. And from there he is a player who would be extremely interesting." Should Manchester United sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin? Have your say in the comments section. ‌ Ferdinand's comments come as United prepare to sell Rasmus Hojlund to AC Milan. Hojlund has been shoved down the pecking order by the arrival of Sesko, having endured two difficult seasons with the Red Devils following his £72m move from Atalanta. The deal would be worth around £40m, potentially funding United's business in other areas. Amorim is reportedly targeting a midfielder, with Brighton star Carlos Baleba high on his shortlist. ‌ A goalkeeper could also be signed to provide competition for Andre Onana. Paris Saint-Germain shot-stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma has been linked, although Manchester City are the favourites to land his signature and are said to have agreed personal terms. In addition to Hojlund, United are willing to sell Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia, who all weren't involved in the club's pre-season tour of the USA. Amorim's side begin their Premier League campaign at home to Arsenal on Sunday.
