Enzo Maresca makes worrying claim over new £37million Chelsea signing

Enzo Maresca wants Chelsea to sign a centre-back to replace the injured Levi Colwill. England international Colwill is set to miss most of the new season after suffering an ACL injury in training. Tosin Adarabioyo and Trevoh Chalobah are poised to start in central defence against Crystal Palace in the Premier League opener on Sunday. But Blues boss Maresca is not convinced he can replace key man Colwill, 22, from within his current squad and has been linked with a move for Antonio Silva of Benfica. 'You know how important Levi has been for us last season, for the way we want to play,' said Maresca. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. 'We said many times that we are able to create chances and to attack in the right way if we are able to build in the right way. Levi was a huge part of our build-up and now he's out. 'We are trying to find a solution internally, but the club know exactly what I think and we'll see what happens. 'I think we need a central defender. We are looking for an internal solution but as I said, the club know exactly what I think. 'We have a fantastic squad. We are happy with the squad. we are, no doubt. But we said many times that when the transfer window is open, anything can happen.' Chelsea have added the highly-rated Jorrel Hato to their ranks this summer at a cost of £37million, but Maresca has questioned whether the versatile former Ajax defender would represent a natural replacement for Colwill. He said: 'When we build, we build with Levi in the middle. Last year, we played 64 games and we played 64 games with Levi and Tosin [Adarabioyo]. Now Levi is out, the only one who can do that job well is Tosin. 'We have the Premier League and Champions League. These kind of players, the rest can adapt. 'We have [Jorrel] Hato but he never played as the guy in the middle last season. It is not about central defenders. Yes he is a central defender, but what does he have to do? Can he do that? It is different. 'We also have Benoit [Badishille] and Wes [Fofana] who have problems, and this is why the club know exactly what I think about central defenders.' Anthony Gordon injury update ahead of Aston Villa vs Newcastle

Anthony Gordon is available for Newcastle United's Premier League opener against Aston Villa. The Magpies have endured a frustrating summer transfer window but must now switch focus to Villa as they begin a season where they will be fighting on four fronts having secured their return to the Champions League. Gordon, who scored nine goals and provided seven assists last season, picked up a knock in his side's final pre-season game against Atletico Madrid, forced off in the 2-0 defeat to the La Liga giants. Eddie Howe suggested post-match his winger had suffered a twisted ankle rather than any muscle damage, with Gordon later writing on social media: 'Just twisted my ankle, no problems. Glad to be back home. Business time next.' Speaking ahead of the trip to Villa Park for Saturday's lunchtime kick-off, Howe confirmed he has an almost-fully fit squad to choose from with new signing Malick Thaw also in line to make his debut. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. 'Everyone is available apart from Joe (Willock), and he's not too far away himself. We have a relatively good-looking squad in terms of injury news. 'Malick (Thiaw) will be part of the squad. He has trained for two days, it's never easy coming in at the end of pre-season, but he's doing well.' Newcastle will be without Alexander Isak who has reportedly vowed never to play for the club again as he tries to force a move to Liverpool. The club rejected an opening offer of £110m plus add-ons for Isak from Liverpool with the striker missing the pre-season tour to Asia and has not featured in any of their friendly matches. Howe said: 'We do [have to forget about Isak] – he's not here with us. More Trending 'We have to focus on who is here and get the best out of them. The players are aware he's not here, the focus will be on each player playing to the best of their ability.' 'I want him to play. I want him to train. I've had those conversations [with Isak] but the details of those will remain private. 'There is no change to the situation. All my focus has been on the training, Aston Villa and the transfer front in terms of getting players in – that is all-consuming for me. 'Alex's situation has been unchanged for a while and that will continue to be the case.' Chelsea Premier League 2025 Full Schedule: Chelsea fixtures, match list, dates, timings, venues

Chelsea Premier League 2025 Full Schedule, Fixtures, Match List, Dates, Venue: Chelsea have had quite the time towards the end of last season, winning the UEFA Conference League and the Club World Cup, with the latter coming after they handed European champions PSG a sound thrashing. They have made eight additions to their squad this season and it looks like more could come. Even then, it is considerably less compared to the madcap splurge they have notoriously gone on in the recent past, leading to the dressing room not having enough space to fit the players. Chelsea's season starts with a match against Crystal Palace at home on Sunday. It was a rather incredible start that they made last season, losing just two of their first 16 games and becoming a surprise contender for the title against Liverpool. September was especially fruitful, with forward Cole Palmer winning player of the month and manager Enzo Marseca winning manager of the month. However, their campaign fizzed out somewhat after Boxing Day, starting with a shock defeat to cross-town minnows Fulham. It ended up becoming a struggle for top five. They ended up picking up pace around spring time and finished the season placed fourth. Over the course of it, Maresca managed to build a good base out of a bloated squad, establishing a possession-based game while emphasising good defensive principles. It led to goalscoring chances coming at a premium for both their opposition and themselves.
