MACC remands KLIA officer for alleged RM8,000 bribery

The Sun6 days ago
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has secured a five-day remand order for an enforcement officer accused of accepting approximately RM8,000 in bribes while stationed at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) arrival counter.
Magistrate Zur Azureen Zainalkefli approved the remand application at the Shah Alam Magistrate's Court, allowing authorities to detain the suspect until July 29. The officer, a man in his 20s, was arrested at his workplace yesterday afternoon.
A source familiar with the case revealed that the suspect allegedly received the bribes during his duty hours. 'Investigations indicate the bribes were linked to counter setting activities, and the money was discovered in his pants pocket during inspection,' the source said. Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage reportedly played a key role in identifying the misconduct.
Selangor MACC deputy director Khairul Izwan Karim confirmed the arrest, noting that the case falls under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009. Authorities are continuing their probe to determine the full extent of the alleged corruption. - Bernama

Teenager pleads guilty to assaulting teacher

by AKMAR ANNUAR A 14-YEAR-OLD student pleaded guilty at the Magistrates' Court on July 30 to a charge of assaulting his teacher at a secondary school earlier this week. The incident, which occurred on July 28, involved the teenager — currently in a transition class — punching his teacher in the face following a disciplinary reprimand. The case has drawn public attention after a 38-second video of the altercation was widely circulated on social media. Magistrate Fatin Dayana Jalil postponed sentencing to Sept 11 to allow time for the Social Welfare Department (JKM) to prepare a character report. The boy was accompanied by both his parents during the closed-door proceedings. His mother appeared visibly distressed as they entered the courtroom. According to the charge, the student intentionally caused injury to the teacher at approximately 4.48pm on the school premises. The charge was framed under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of one year's imprisonment, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction. Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Muhammad Syafiq Mohd Zulbahrin proposed bail be set at RM5,000, citing the seriousness of the offence and its widespread attention online. 'The case has gone viral and involves an assault on a teacher during school hours,' he said. However, defence counsel S Priyalatha requested a lower bail, stressing that the teenager is still in school and falls under the category of a young offender. 'My client is 14 years old, still in school and he is a juvenile under the law. I request a lower bail amount so as not to burden the family,' she told reporters outside the courtroom. The court subsequently allowed bail at RM1,000 with one surety. Kajang District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof confirmed the arrest, saying that the altercation occurred after the teacher reprimanded the student for skipping physical education class. The teacher, a 29-year-old man, lodged a police report at 7.15pm the same day. Initial investigations revealed that the student was expected to be on the school field during the class session but was absent, prompting the confrontation.

Durian farmer caught with 919kg of Musang King, D24 from protected forest

KUANTAN: A durian farmer's plan to profit from Musang King and D24 durians planted illegally in the Gunung Benum Forest Reserve was thwarted when authorities intercepted a four-wheel-drive vehicle transporting the fruit yesterday. The four-hour patrol, which ended at 7am, led to the arrest of a 48-year-old man and the seizure of 919kg of durians worth about RM5,000. Pahang Forestry Department director Zainuddin Jamaluddin said the grade C and D durians were believed to be for local markets. Investigations showed the trees were located in Compartment 91 of the Gunung Benum Forest Reserve in Raub. He said the department seized the vehicle and the durians under the National Forestry Act 1984 for encroachment and unlawful extraction of forest produce. "The man who was detained was later released on police bail after providing a statement. "The investigating officer will continue with the probe before legal action is taken for removing forest produce (durians) without authorisation," he was quoted as saying by Berita Harian. Daily patrols have been conducted since July 21 following the launch of an integrated operation with the Royal Malaysia Police, the Pahang State Enforcement Unit, the General Operations Force (PGA), Rela, and the Raub District and Land Office. "Gunung Benum Forest Reserve has become a site for illegal cultivation of durians and other fruit trees such as mangosteen, rambutan, petai, and kantan, believed to be planted by local residents," Zainuddin said. He said the department would not compromise with those involved in illegal activities in the reserve. More than 40 forestry personnel, along with officers from other agencies, are involved in the 60-day operation. Nine areas have been identified as hotspots for illegal farming. He urged communities living near the forest reserve not to harvest or carry out activities in the area. "Forest department enforcement units constantly patrol high-risk areas within the reserves. Aside from illegal farming, there are also individuals entering the forests for recreation. Entering a forest reserve requires a permit or official permission. "We have placed numerous signboards stating that entry without authorisation is an offence. Everyone must comply to avoid facing legal action," he said.
