KUCHING (Aug 14): Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has called for greater protection of national leaders and their families following the shocking assault on Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli's son in Putrajaya yesterday.
He said such incidents, though uncommon in Malaysia, must be taken seriously.
'I have also just read about what happened in Kuala Lumpur regarding Rafizi's child, who was alleged pulled by two people on a motorcycle and one of them had jabbed him with a syringe.
'Incidents like this are rare, which is why it is rather shocking, and I feel that the safety of leaders and their families should now be safeguarded as well if such things can happen,' he told reporters when met at a hotel here last night.
Abdul Karim had attended the State Gala Dinner held in conjunction with the 24th Asean-China Senior Officials' Meeting on the Implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea here, which was also graced by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Ministry of Foreign Affairs secretary-general Datuk Seri Amran Mohamed Zin.
He pointed out that only police investigations would be to determine the motive behind the attack, which took place as Rafizi's son was leaving a shopping mall with his mother.
'We do not know why this incident occurred. Possibly, there had been threats or something similar directed at Rafizi beforehand.
'But we hope that such incidents will not happen in Malaysia. They can cause feelings of fear and anxiety,' he said.
Abdul Karim expressed confidence the police would carry out thorough investigations to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
'I was rather shocked by what I read on social media, as such incidents are very rare.
'I hope the police will investigate, probe, and resolve this matter so that such feelings of fear can be eased,' he said.
Police confirmed that Rafizi's son was assaulted at a shopping mall in Putrajaya yesterday afternoon.
Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the incident was believed to have occurred at 2pm at the mall's pick-up and drop-off area.
'The incident occurred when the victim was reportedly with his mother and their driver,' he told Bernama.
Investigations are ongoing.

Malaysians' Duty To Respect Jalur Gemilang

IPOH, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- Every Malaysian who understands the meaning of a sovereign and independent country has a duty to respect the Jalur Gemilang flag, Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said. Respecting the Jalur Gemilang flag is not a question of race, skin colour, religion or party affiliation, he added. "When we fly the Jalur Gemilang, let's do it properly and with respect, not upside down, don't let it get worn or torn. "If it's put up wrongly, let's correct it together, if there are those who don't understand, let's explain. This is how we show we understand and care,' he said during his speech at the Perak-level National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang Flag 2025 campaign here tonight. He said respecting the Jalur Gemilang flag showed respect for the country as the flag represented the country and stood for its dignity, history and the future of all Malaysians. "Every time it (the Jalur Gemilang flag) flies high, let us cheer with our spirit, and remind ourselves that we are united under one flag, we fight under one banner, and we bear this flag as we continue to blaze ahead to build our future,' he added. Saarani reminded the public that all Malaysians need to commemorate the National Day celebrations as a way to live their lives in peace, unity and to build a country with all their strength and capabilities. "Don't let our independence be just a date on the calendar, let it live in our every heartbeat. As we enjoy the gifts of peace, let us be truly grateful and thankful,' he added. There were various activities held during the launch since the afternoon, including exhibitions, a Rahmah Sale, a children's costume contest as well as booths offering services from various agencies, along with performances by local artistes, including Zamani Siam.

The gathering, which began at 7.50pm, opened with the Sabah state anthem and a prayer before the crowd chanted 'Tangkap Penjenayah' (Arrest the Criminals) in unison. People from all walks of life attended the event, showing unity in their grief and determination to seek answers. Political leaders from both sides of the divide were present, reflecting the broad support for the call to end bullying and protect children. Among them was Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew, who attended with volunteers and representatives from local non-governmental organisations. She stressed the need for reforms to ensure that tragedies like Zara's death do not recur, highlighting the importance of a safe environment for students, especially in boarding schools. Christina also called for a proactive approach in tackling bullying, with early intervention to identify risks before they escalate into life-threatening situations. She emphasised that the issue extended beyond schools, noting that bullying has affected people in workplaces and other settings across the country. Throughout the night, the crowd chanted 'We Are All Zara' as a reminder that her memory fuels the push for change and that no other child should endure the same fate. Penang cops bust heroin lab in Bukit Tambun, seize drugs worth RM75,000

NIBONG TEBAL: Police successfully dismantled a heroin processing laboratory, operated by a drug distribution syndicate, in two raids in the Bukit Tambun area here on Tuesday (Aug 12). Seberang Perai Selatan OCPD Supt Jay January Siowou said a police team from the Penang Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department conducted a raid before arresting two local men and a Sri Lankan man, all aged between 25 and 46. "In the first raid at 4.29pm at a house in Taman Tambun Permai, police arrested two local men along with 1,113gm of heroin, 641gm of heroin base, 4kg of caffeine, several chemicals, and equipment suspected of being drug processing tools. "In the second raid at a house not far from the first residence, at around 5.04pm, we arrested a Sri Lankan man with 26kg of caffeine. All the drugs seized in the two raids were worth RM74,500," he said in a statement on Friday (Aug 15). He said based the first house was used as a drug processing laboratory with one of the local suspects being the mastermind and having the expertise to process heroin. Supt Jay said that the other two suspects acted as assistants as well as couriers for the drugs and chemicals for the syndicate. With these activities, he said they were believed to live luxuriously even though they were unemployed. He said intelligence revealed that the syndicate had been engaging in the drug processing activities since January and that the heroin they processed was for the local market. The two local men who were arrested possessed previous records related to drugs and crime, while the Sri Lankan man had no previous record. He added that the total amount of drugs seized could be used by 49,500 addicts. Supt Jay said following their arrest, the police seized four vehicles, as well as two motorcycles, all valued at RM134,500. "All the drugs and vehicles seized in the raid were worth RM209,000. The three men are now remanded for seven days until Aug 19 to assist with the investigation. "The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952," he added. — Bernama
