Hopefully I will be back – Lewis Hamilton dejected after Hungaroring nightmare

Glasgow Times2 days ago
A day after Hamilton described himself as 'absolutely useless', and called on his own Ferrari team to replace him, the seven-time world champion started 12th and finished in the same position at the Hungaroring, a lap behind winner Lando Norris. Charles Leclerc was fourth in the other Ferrari.
Fronting up to TV cameras after the conclusion of the 14th race of his Ferrari career which has so far failed to live up to its pre-season hype, Hamilton was asked to reflect on his post-qualifying comments.

'When you have a feeling, you have a feeling,' he told Sky Sports. 'There is a lot going on in the background that is not great.'
Asked if he had fallen out of love with racing, Hamilton replied: 'No, I still love the team.'
Hamilton then headed for his session with the print media.
Quizzed on how he felt a day on from being eliminated in Q2 – a performance made all the more harrowing after Leclerc took pole position, he replied: 'Same.'
Put to him that his remarks suggesting that Ferrari 'need a new driver' would worry his fans, the British driver again replied: 'Same.'
Asked if he had anything else to say other than 'the same', Hamilton said: 'I have got nothing else to say.'

The sport now breaks for three weeks for its mid-season shutdown. The next race takes place in the Netherlands on August 31.
'Very much so,' said Hamilton, who was then asked if he was looking forward to the summer break. Quizzed as to whether he will definitely be driving at the next round in Zandvoort, Hamilton replied: 'I look forward to coming back… Hopefully I will be back, yeah.'
Hamilton has won a record eight times at the Hungaroring but this has been an alarming weekend for the 40-year-old.
Hamilton stood largely on his own for the drivers' parade, which takes place before every race, and was later accompanied by Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli.
By the end of the first lap, he dropped behind Carlos Sainz and Antonelli and was 14th. At the end of the eighth lap, he was 20 seconds behind Leclerc, then leading, in the other Ferrari, and at the end of lap 14 he trailed his team-mate by half a minute.
When he left the pits on lap 43 for his sole change of tyres, Hamilton was a lap down on the leaders. Hamilton fought back past Alpine's Pierre Gasly and then Sainz to cross the line in 12th.
However, he is 42 points behind Leclerc, has been out-qualified by his team-mate at 10 of the 14 rounds, beaten him in only two races, at Imola and Silverstone, and is still awaiting his first podium in Ferrari colours.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff threw his support behind Lewis Hamilton (Bradley Collyer/PA)
But Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, who oversaw six of Hamilton's record-equalling seven titles, said: 'Lewis is wearing his heart on his sleeve.
'It was very raw what he said. He was hard on himself. We have seen it before when he felt he had not met his own expectations. He's been that emotionally transparent since he was a young adult.
'But he is the GOAT. He will always be the GOAT. And nobody is going to take it away for any single weekends or a race season that hasn't gone to plan. That is something he always needs to remember – that he is the greatest of all time.'
Hamilton's Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur added: 'I don't need to motivate him (Hamilton). He is frustrated but not demotivated, that is a different story. I can perfectly understand the situation.'

Mercedes-Benz CEO Announces 18 New Models By The End Of 2027

Mercedes Has Big Plans To Overcome Rivals In recent times, BMW has been enjoying remarkable sales success, but its compatriot rivals are not performing as well. In fact, BMW has sold twice as many cars as Audi did in the first six months of 2025, and while Mercedes has reported better figures, it's still only sold 142,000 vehicles in Q1 2025 compared to BMW's 178,499. In an attempt to close the gap to BMW over the next few years, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius says the period from this year through 2027 will have 'probably the most intense amount of launches in a three-year period in the history of our company,' reports Top Gear, with no fewer than 18 new models planned. 18 New Vehicles, But Not As Many New Nameplates Source: SH Proshots/Autoblog Mercedes is considering the launch of a gas-powered vehicle as a separate thing from the launch of an EV with the same name, so the CLA EV counts as one launch and the hybrid CLA as another. Similarly, the upcoming combustion-powered CLA Shooting Brake is a new launch separate from the EV that has already been released. Mercedes reportedly intends to add one more 'entry-level' combustion car in 2026, alongside two electric cars. One tier above these cars are the 'core' Merc models, which will welcome two combustion vehicles and two EVs next year. One of these will be the new all-electric GLC that was recently teased and will be revealed at the Munich auto show (IAA) in September. As TG notes, the current C-Class was launched around the same time as the GLC, in 2021, so it's likely that a facelift of the sedan will be unveiled before long. Major Changes Coming To The Top Tier Of Mercedes Models Source: Mercedes-Benz 'Most of the customers at the top end today still choose the Swiss watch of cars with a combustion engine, but it's not going to stop our push to electrification,' Källenius said. 'By the end of this decade, for all relevant Mercedes-Benz models, there will be the choice of an electric powertrain for customers.' This mirrors earlier comments from the company that revealed the EQS would disappear to be reborn simply as an S-Class EV with similar styling to the traditional model. As we've noted before, BMW's decision to make EVs like the i4, i5, and i7 look nearly identical to their combustion-powered 4 Series, 5 Series, and 7 Series siblings appears to be paying dividends. At the same time, Mercedes will continue developing internal combustion powertrains. 'Five years ago, we would have been estimating that we would be further along in the journey to electrification by now,' the CEO said. 'We will have both ICE and EV for minimum the next 10 years. You cannot let your high-tech combustion engine side sit still.' Expect new AMG models soon, a new baby G-Class, and the production version of the GTXX concept, which will also spawn an SUV. In summary, to satisfy both sorts of buyers, Mercedes plans six new combustion cars and six new EVs in the 'top end' bracket, two new ICE models and one EV in the 'core' lineup, and one new combustion car in the 'entry level' segment. Rangers player ratings: Smiling assassin, two 9

Rangers have one foot in the play-off round of the Champions League after a comprehensive 3-0 win over Viktoria Plzen at Ibrox. Russell Martin's men head to Czechia next week with a commanding advantage in this third qualifying round tie and are landslide favourites to face either Club Brugge or Salzburg later this month. Stung by criticism from Martin after starting the Premiership campaign with a 1-1 draw at Motherwell on Saturday, Rangers put in a vastly improved performance in front of 45,000 fans. The manager dropped captain James Tavernier and popular midfielder Nicolas Raskin, but both decisions were vindicated. New signing Oliver Antman was handed a debut and impressed as a right winger, but the star of the show once again was Djeidi Gassama on the other flank. He scored twice and is already the darling of the home support. The young Frenchman opened the scoring on 15 minutes after good link-up from Cyriel Dessers and the Nigerian striker, on his first start of the season, converted a penalty right on half-time after a foul on Antman. Rangers bagged a third on 51 minutes when Gassama headed home an Antman cross and while the hosts could have scored more, they head into next Tuesday's second leg with a commanding advantage against limited opposition. We give each player a mark out of ten for their performance at Ibrox. 1 . Jack Butland Quiet night. A cultured fellow, he may as well have visited and spent the first half reading all of The Scotsman's excellent Edinburgh festival reviews via our generous subscription package. First save was a trundler on 55 minutes and then had to put the iPad down when Plzen rallied to some extent towards the end. 6 | SNS Group Photo Sales 2 . Max Aarons Moved to his more natural position of right-back for this match, taking the place of dropped captain Tavernier. Had a couple of hairy defensive moments but looked far more comfortable on this flank. Sent a lovely pass through to Antman that led to the third goal. Hobbled off on 75 minutes for Tavernier after taking a kick. 7 | PA Photo Sales 3 . Jefte First competitive start under Martin. Having a natural left-back on the pitch gave Rangers much more balance. Steady enough performance and his only blot on the copybook was being booked on 41 minutes for a lunging foul after a poor touch. 6 | PA Photo Sales 4 . Nasser Djiga A very likeable performance from the Wolves loanee. More assured on the ball than Souttar and won almost all of his physical duels. Great block to deny a certain Vydra goal on 19 minutes when the scoreline was deadlocked. Looks like one of Rangers' better summer signings. 8 | SNS Group Photo Sales Related topics: Scottish Premiership
