Family 'heartbroken' as missing sailor named as London father

The family of a British sailor who went missing after his boat capsized off the south-west coast of France say they are "heartbroken by this sudden loss".
Father-of-five Charles Todd, 73, sent out a distress signal from his yacht on 25 January amid fierce weather brought on by Storm Herminia in the area of the Bay of Biscay.
A French air force helicopter was dispatched as part of an immediate response to try and find Mr Todd, but they found his 12-metre yacht, the Tiger PA, "eviscerated" in the Bay of Biscay.
Mr Todd's family said the search was called off in the early hours of 26 January after teams were "unable to locate him".
According to the Préfecture maritime de l'Atlantique, the distress call was detected approximately 80km (50 miles) west of Lacanau at about 15:00 local time (14:00 GMT).
As part of the rescue operation, French officials said a Portuguese cargo ship and a Spanish hospital vessel were both diverted to the area and to help with the search, alongside the French navy.
But, at 01:33 (00:33 GMT) the following morning the Préfecture maritime de l'Atlantique said the search was suspended "due to a lack of new information".
In a tribute, Mr Todd's daughter, Nadine Gowan, told the BBC her father was sailing to the Caribbean via the Canary Islands when the tragedy occurred.
His family described him as a "loving, charismatic, young-at-heart" and as someone "who lived life to the full".
They added that Mr Todd was born in Ghana and moved to Manchester when he was young.
He was a keen musician, a skilled carpenter and lived in Germany for 25 years where he ran his own joinery business, the family said.
Mr Todd returned to London in 2004 and was a well-respected member of the Greenwich Yacht Club for over a decade.
The family has expressed their gratitude to the French rescue teams and the British Consulate in Bordeaux.

These dog breeds rank as the trendiest in the US. See which ones made the list

A dog breed ranks as the nation's trendiest for the second year straight. The miniature poodle ranks No. 1 on a list of breeds that are gaining year-over-year interest, according to results published Wednesday, Aug. 20. 'Up 4% this year, the miniature poodles bring all the brains and charm of a standard poodle in a smaller, whiskered package,' the online pet resource wrote in its report. 'These lovable Velcro dogs stick close to their humans, which could (be) why they are sticking in the number one trending spot again this year.' So, which other types of pups were trending? Here are the breeds that round out the top five: American Staffordshire terrier at No. 2Cavalier King Charles spaniel at No. 3Toy poodle at No. 4Pug at No. 5 To create the list, studied data from millions of pet owners who use its online resources. It studied figures from 2024 to 2025 to determine which breeds saw a 'sudden increase' in growth 'from one year to another,' the website wrote in a news release and in an email to McClatchy News. For the second year in a row, the miniature poodle reigns as the trendiest U.S. dog breed. It topped the list in 2024 after previously holding the No. 2 spot in 2023, results show. 'Continued popularity could be due to their compact size as well as breed traits that make miniature poodles more likely to want companionship with their people,' a spokesperson wrote. 'According to Rover's survey, pet parents say size is a top factor when choosing a dog (58%) and loyalty is the most desirable personality trait (67%).' In addition to surveying more than 1,000 pet owners across the country, considered which of the nation's dog breeds are most popular overall. To create that list, it studied the total volume of each type of dog that joined its website in 2025. Here are the favorites: Mixed breed at No. 1Labrador retriever at No. 2Golden retriever at No. 3Goldendoodle at No. 4German shepherd at No. 5 Earlier this year, the American Kennel Club found that French bulldogs were the nation's most common breed, McClatchy News reported.

I'm a busy mom of 2 toddlers. Here are 8 items I always grab at Trader Joe's for quick and easy weeknight dinners.

I'm a busy mom of two toddlers who loves shopping at Trader Joe's. The store is my go-to for weeknight dinner staples like chicken sausage and ravioli. My kids love the Trader Joe's mac and cheese and yellow-corn taco shells. I've been a big Trader Joe's fan for years. From shopping there as a first-time homeowner to grabbing snacks for my kids as a new mom, Trader Joe's products have gotten me through each new phase of adulthood. For me, versatility is key, and I never know when my toddler's favorite food will become the mortal enemy of dinner time. So, it's great to have options. Luckily, these eight Trader Joe's items are easy to whip up into quick and easy weeknight dinners (with choices) that we all love. Trader Joe's chicken sausage is a versatile dinner staple. I usually plan our meals around a protein, and Trader Joe's chicken sausage is one of my favorites. It's so easy to prepare and even easier to spin up into a meal I know my kids will eat and enjoy. I like serving it alongside a fresh tomato salad (and mini French baguettes), mixed into soup, or crumbled and scattered for a sheet-pan gnocchi recipe. Trader Joe's pesto chicken does all the heavy lifting. Trader Joe's pesto chicken is another item I keep in my rotation. The hard work is done for me — plus, the less I have to interact with raw meat, the better. I like baking the chicken and mixing it up with pasta, or pressing it into a panini with fresh mozzarella and tomato. The frozen chicken tenders are great on their own or as part of a meal. Another versatile protein is Trader Joe's frozen chicken tenders in the green bag. When they're served as advertised, there are never any complaints around my dinner table. However, I like to reimagine them as other crowd-pleasing creations, like mini chicken Caesar salad wraps or chopped-chicken BLT sandwiches. My kids love the store's yellow-corn taco shells. The store's delicious dipping sauces may seem like the best accoutrement to our favorite proteins, but in my house, it's the stone-ground yellow corn taco shells. If my boys aren't thrilled with the protein in front of them, the introduction of a taco shell to the meal is like the wave of a magic wand. Suddenly, everything on their plate is delicious. I always grab a package of Trader Joe's pizza crust. I may love designing meals around protein, but the truth is, I'm a carb-loving girl. That's why I always pick up a package of Trader Joe's pizza crust. In addition to using it to make a classic pizza, I like to season the crust and bake it as a flatbread to be served alongside pasta dishes. It's also great when topped with a bright and easy arugula salad. Trader Joe's has a great selection of ravioli. It's rare that I leave the store without at least one variety of Trader Joe's ravioli in my cart. Our favorites include the cacio e pepe, porcini mushroom and truffle, and classic four cheese. My kids can't get enough of the store's mac and cheese. Trader Joe's Ready Veggies are the perfect accompaniment to any meal. When shopping at Trader Joe's, I always pick up a package of the Ready Veggies — a blend of broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale, carrots, and snow peas. I like to season the vegetables with Trader Joe's soyaki sauce and serve them alongside brown rice and a protein.

Mystery of massive sinkhole that engulfed Surrey street closer to being solved

A massive sinkhole that engulfed a street in Surrey in February started with a burst water main, engineers have said. For the past six months, repair workers in the village of Godstone have been trying to solve the mystery of its cause. However, they say they are still not ready to blame the burst for the appearance of the hole. They uncovered a network of abandoned Victorian sand mining tunnels under the ground in June, which residents had been aware of for decades. Surrey County Council infrastructure manager Lloyd Allen, who oversees the repairs, told the BBC: "We don't know what caused the water main burst.' He said the engineers first on the scene after the hole's appearance realised the water was disappearing underground - an unusually large amount of water to naturally soak into the sand. Mr Allen said: "So that's why we started our investigations, talking to the people that lived in the area who know about the mines. It took some months using lots of different techniques to find them." Engineers have been plotting the tunnels by driving boreholes into the sandstone, a process he said had been made more complicated by the cables and pipes that sit underground. He added: "We have to make sure when we've finished this thing doesn't fall down again. Because this is a busy road, normally, with big lorries coming through." The road, which isn't expected to reopen until at least December, has meant that Godstone businesses have lost passing trade. Local businesses told the BBC they have been 'left in the dark' over the repair plans, with one business owner claiming his income had been slashed to a third of what it was because of the hole. The website reported that the village's Hare & Hounds pub has seen a 40 per cent drop in customers after the sinkhole separated the pub from the M25 nearby. After the crater appeared overnight on 17 February, residents were told to 'get out as quickly as possible'. More than 30 homes were evacuated as the hole grew up to 19 metres in length, and a second one opened up in the days following. Godstone residents Nicola and Damian Styles, 46 and 44, said it was a 'shock' to be woken by police in the middle of the night. Mr Styles said: 'We just sort of grabbed everything, the clothes on our back and our work laptops, and drove out quickly. We didn't know how long we were going to be out for.' Just last week, a section of the pavement reopened, and the sinkhole was downgraded to a 'road collapse'. Shane Fry, who runs DD Services, a garage on the high street, said: 'They said they would keep us up to date, but this hasn't happened. We need to know. It will benefit everyone in the area." Will McLean, the owner of a residential windows and doors company, said the sinkhole had 'reduced footfall to virtually zero'. He added: "Financially, it has been massive. In terms of business, we are down 60 per cent to 70 per cent, which is huge - devastating in fact."
