Utah passes new protections for children of influencers after Ruby Franke case
Republican Gov. Spencer Cox signed a law that gives kids a way to remove media they are featured in from the internet. It also orders parents who make more than $150,000 off the content annually to set aside 15 percent of those earnings into a trust fund that the children can access once they turn 18 years old.
Cox signed the law under encouragement from Franke's now ex-husband, Kevin, after he told lawmakers earlier this year that he wishes he never let his ex-wife post their children online, The Associated Press reported.
'Children cannot give informed consent to be filmed on social media, period,' he said. 'Vlogging my family, putting my children into public social media, was wrong, and I regret it every day.'
Kevin and Ruby Franke launched a family YouTube channel titled '8 Passengers' in 2015. Ruby Franke documented their life as a Mormon family in Utah and became close with parenting content creator Jodi Hildebrandt, who encouraged her to cut off ties with Kevin Franke and move the youngest two children into her home.
Ruby Franke's 12-year-old son, who was emaciated, escaped through a window and knocked on a neighbor's door. The two women were arrested on child abuse charges. The eldest child detailed his mother's obsession with 'striking content gold' and looking for views on videos at the expense of her children.
The new Utah law applies to children who are featured in online content as well as those who appear in TV or movies.
Eve Franke, 11, who police found emaciated with her head shaved, wrote a letter in support of the bill and noted that sometimes YouTube is a good thing that 'brings us together,' but 'kids deserve to be loved, not used by the ones that are supposed to love them the most,' The Associated Press reported.
Several other states have taken steps to protect children from online exploitation in the content-creation industry, including Illinois, California and Minnesota, where children's earnings are protected.

Intel stock drops after Trump demands its CEO 'resign immediately,' calling him 'highly conflicted'
Intel's CEO is in the political crosshairs. President Donald Trump called on Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan to resign on Thursday, adding to the challenges facing the largest US chipmaker. Trump called Tan "highly CONFLICTED" in a post on Truth Social, saying that he "must resign, immediately. There is no other solution to this problem." Intel shares fell 5% in premarket trading following Trump's post. Its share price was down over 3% as of 11 a.m. in New York. Trump's missive came two days after Sen. Tom Cotton wrote a letter to the company's board of directors raising questions about Tan's reported investments in and ownership of Chinese companies, including some with alleged ties to the Chinese military. In April, Reuters reported that Tan had invested in hundreds of Chinese companies, including eight with ties to China's People's Liberation Army. An Intel spokesperson at the time told Reuters that "we handle any potential conflicts appropriately and provide disclosures as required by SEC rules" and that Tan had filled out questionnaires requiring disclosure of any potential conflicts of interest. Sen. Tom Cotton, an Arkansas Republican, also called attention to the fact that prior to becoming Intel CEO in March, Tan was the CEO of Cadence Design Systems, a company that pleaded guilty last week to illegally exporting technology to a Chinese military university. Cadence Design Systems agreed to pay $118 million in criminal penalties. Intel received a roughly $8 billion grant from the US government under the CHIPS and Science Act, a 2022 law designed to boost the American chip manufacturing industry. "Intel is required to be a responsible steward of American taxpayer dollars and to comply with applicable security regulations," Cotton wrote. "Mr. Tan's associations raise questions about Intel's ability to fulfill these obligations." Trump's call for Tan's resignation was quickly backed up by two GOP senators — Bernie Moreno of Ohio and Rick Scott of Florida. It's the latest challenge for the company, which recently warned that it could stop developing its 14A chip if it's "unable to secure a significant external customer and meet important customer milestones." The former tech giant has been battling high volatility in the stock market all year, as it faces steep competition from rivals. Wall Street sentiment toward Intel remains mixed but skews negative, with the majority of analysts maintaining either sell or hold ratings, according to data from Markets Insider. Bush's "acceptable" plans. Bishop Mark Brennan, who presides over the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston encompassing all of West Virginia, said America was "built on the backs of men and women who came from other countries, whether freely or in chains." "Now we see our government adopting harsh measures to deport as many immigrants as possible, often without distinguishing between true criminals and law-abiding persons." "A government that says it wants to help families is willing to separate immigrant parents from their children. A government that oversees the economy wants to expel millions of workers upon whom the economy depends," Brennan went on. "Our Church looks at the person, not his or her legal status, and, following Christ's teaching and example, reaches out to help the immigrant," Bishop Brennan continued. Hearkening back to the 19th century, Brennan noted the Fugitive Slave Act had been used to "calm tensions" between the states and that the northern states refused to cooperate because they saw it as an unjust law. "It is Catholic teaching that an unjust law does not bind in conscience. But one must be willing to accept the consequences of civil disobedience. Martin Luther King, Jr., was willing to go to jail rather than acquiesce in unjust laws, a willingness shared by pro-life activists and people protesting nuclear arms," Brennan added. "Our politicians have failed us." The White House called the statement "rife with inaccuracies and misinformation. "Anyone who has broken the law and entered the United States illegally is, by definition, not a 'law-abiding person.' President Trump is keeping his promise to the American people to carry out the largest mass deportation operation in history, and unlike prior failed leaders like Joe Biden, he is empowering federal law enforcement officers to do their job and enforce the law.
