PFF rank Steelers among bottom-five NFL teams in one key area

USA Today21-06-2025
The Black and Gold faithful aren't the only ones aware of Pittsburgh's poor receiving corps heading into 2025 — as Pro Football Focus ranked the Steelers' unit near the very bottom of the NFL.
PFF's Trevor Sikkema recently ranked NFL teams' receiving corps — and the Steelers came in at No. 29:
"The Steelers traded for D.K. Metcalf in the offseason but then shipped off George Pickens," Sikkema said. "That profiles as only a slight upgrade for a team that finished 20th in PFF receiving grade in 2024. Pittsburgh should get more out of second-year receiver Roman Wilson, who was largely injured last season, and the backfield combination of Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell brings some third-down, pass-catching ability."
Acquiring Metcalf to trade away Pickens was definitely a head-scratcher, but one that was seemingly explained by ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler, who argued Aaron Rodgers' impending arrival played a role in the move.
Still, the Steelers are clearly in need of some additional pass catchers — but who and when remain a complete mystery for Pittsburgh.

Dan Campbell 'fired up' about Detroit Lions quarterback Kyle Allen

Dan Campbell 'fired up' about Detroit Lions quarterback Kyle Allen originally appeared on The Sporting News The Detroit Lions are still trying to figure out who their backup quarterback will be for the 2025 NFL season, and it seems like we finally have some clarity regarding the competition based on Friday's preseason contest versus the Atlanta Falcons. Kyle Allen completely outplayed Hendon Hooker in Atlanta on Friday. Allen completed seven of his eight passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns. The veteran signal-caller led Detroit on three scoring drives and played a near-flawless game, though he did fumble once, which he was able to recover. During a press conference on Monday, Campbell praised Allen for his play and said the 29-year-old signal-caller was on point. "I thought he was on point with the operated the offense at a high level. I was fired up," Campbell said of Allen's performance against the Falcons via Kory Woods of Allen's exceptional play on Friday isn't the only reason why he is the clear leader in the QB2 battle right now. Hooker's struggles from the Hall of Fame game continued in preseason Week 1, as the Tennessee product lost two fumbles and posted just 38 passing yards on seven completions. Campbell revealed that he benched Hooker for Allen in the second quarter due to the fumbles. "You decide you're gonna be a runner, you gotta tuck it away, man," Campbell on Hooker's fumbling issues versus the Falcons via Colton Pouncy of The Athletic. It's clear that Allen has the edge over Hooker heading into this week's preseason contest versus the Miami Dolphins. If Allen continues to stack solid outings, Detroit will likely pick him over Hooker as No.2 quarterback behind Jared Goff due to his experience, as he has started 19 games in his career thus far. Monday Cheese Curds: Early injury roundup

We'll start this week's Curds off with a personal anecdote. I'm not much of a preseason spectator, but on Friday night I found myself with rare plop time, so I decided to pull out my phone and check in on that night's game between the Lions and the Falcons. What I was greeted with was an ambulance parked on the field, with the entirety of both teams taking a knee. That's the first action I saw in the 2025 NFL season. Thankfully, the injured Lion, Morice Norris, is back with the team as of today. Not to make light of a terrible situation, but I remember thinking at the time, 'ok, now football is back.' In keeping with that spirit of brutal reality, here's a rundown of some of the injuries that have cropped up for the Green Bay Packers as they make their way through the preseason and towards week one. We'll skip some obvious ones and bottom-of-the-roster guys, as well. WR Jayden Reed – As Justis Mosqueda wrote about on Saturday, the Packers' top wide receiver from last season is currently in a walking boot. S Zayne Anderson – I love to make jokes about the existence (or lack thereof) of Zayne Anderson just as much as the next person, but a knee injury for a guy who's proven himself a good special teams player and reliable depth piece is not ideal. WR Dontayvion Wicks – Wicks missed Saturday's preseason game. This was no surprise to those following closely, as he's been dealing with a calf issue for a couple weeks now. Apparently, breaks are just as hard to catch as footballs. RB MarShawn Lloyd – Speaking of catching breaks, Lloyd, who spent nearly all of 2024 dealing with injuries, now has a groin issue. The clock is ticking for Lloyd to make himself available and show his value. LB Quay Walker – In case you missed it, Walker recently had surgery on an ankle that did not heal properly after an injury last year. He's currently a full participant in team activities, but it's worth keeping in mind. CB Nate Hobbs – Speaking of surgery, new addition Nate Hobbs decided to have a cleanout procedure on his knee, leaving his week 1 availability up for debate. Said LaFleur at a recent presser, 'I'm not going to put a timetable on it (his return).' S Xavier McKinney – The star safety is dealing with a lingering calf injury and is a candidate to miss the remainder of training camp. Unfortunately, that puts a question mark on his week 1 availability as well. Other players nursing non-serious injuries include Rasheed Walker and Emanuel Wilson. Injuries strike blow at safety for Packers – The Green Bay Packers' depth at safety will be put to the test with Xavier McKinney and Zayne Anderson out with injuries. ICYMI: Packers vs Jets film review from Justis Mosqueda – You don't want to believe it, but the defense actually played pretty well on Saturday. Love's flat performance and other takeaways – Breaking down the uninspired performance by Jordan Love and the Packers' starting offense, and everything else you need to know about Saturday's preseason opener. Packers still haven't fixed glaring defensive issue – While some felt pretty good about Green Bay's defensive performance on Sunday, others see signs of continued bad habits. Photos: Historic flash floods hit Milwaukee – Record flooding rains fell in Wisconsin over the weekend, triggering dozens of water rescues, shutting down the Wisconsin State Fair and prompting Milwaukee County officials to declare a state of emergency.

Matthew Stafford is not practicing on Monday

As it turns out, Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford will not practice on Monday. Via multiple reporters on the scene, Stafford is in street clothes for Los Angeles' practice and entered into a wellness chamber before the session. Stafford has not participated in practice throughout camp due to a disc issue in his back. Head coach Sean McVay had said that Stafford would return to practice on Monday, potentially participating in individual drills. But now that will not be the case. Stafford did make at least 60 passes in a workout on Saturday, with McVay saying he was able to move around and had no limitations with his types of throws. Jimmy Garoppolo has been taking the first-team quarterback reps in camp while Stafford has been sidelined.
