Spirit Airlines is going from budget to bougie.
The cut-price carrier announced Tuesday that it will offer new premium perks for travelers, including an extra-legroom option and a policy allowing two free checked bags for cardholders.
The announcement comes after the budget airline filed for bankruptcy protection in March after undergoing a financial restructuring plan.

Spirit said that the new seating will be installed starting in June and roll out across the majority of the airline's planes by July.
The extra-legroom seating will feature seven rows toward the front of the plane, totaling more than 40 seats, which will have 32 inches of space rather than the regular 28. The remaining seat installations are expected to be completed in 2026.
Spirit's 'Go Comfy' offer, which blocked off a middle seat in an endeavor to offer more space to travelers, will be phased out and replaced with the extra-legroom booking option.
Extra-legroom seats will be available for booking beginning May 15, 2025, and flyers will be able to travel in these seats starting July 9, 2025.

The airline will prioritize Free Spirit Gold members, Free Spirit Silver members, and Free Spirit credit card holders. Benefits of the upgrade will be extended to one traveler on the reservation beginning in June.
Upgrades will only be available at boarding for now, but Ghosh told The Points Guy that the airline is 'in active discussion around what upgrades should look like as we go forward.'

China's May lending seen tripling on monetary measures, trade truce: Reuters poll

By Liz Lee BEIJING (Reuters) - China's new yuan loans more than tripled in May compared with a month ago, matching the borrowing appetite in the same period last year, as a temporary trade truce between China and the United States and new government measures helped boost credit demand. Chinese banks are estimated to have issued 850 billion yuan ($118.27 billion) in net new yuan loans last month, according to 18 economists polled by Reuters. April saw 280 billion yuan loans distributed. In mid-May, China and the United States struck a 90-day truce in their bruising tariff war and rolled back most of the triple-digit levies they heaped on each other's goods in early April. Adding to the positive sentiment was Beijing's raft of monetary easing measures last month including interest rate cuts and a major liquidity injection, though Citi Research analysts said the steps may not make an immediate impact on credit demand. "Bills discount rate stayed low in May, and we expect new RMB loans at RMB900 billion, largely in line with last May's level," Citi Research said in a note last week. New yuan loans in May are typically higher than in April as banks begin work to reach their quarterly loan targets. Factory activity at the world's largest manufacturing hub contracted for a second month in May, as trade tensions with the United States remain high and speculation mounts Beijing would roll out further stimulus measures to underpin economic growth. Adding to the external headwinds, frail domestic demand remains a major drag on the world's second-largest economy as households grapple with income pressure and keep a tight leash on spending. A phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Thursday kept the lid on tensions but left key trade issues such as Beijing's control on rare earth exports and Washington's curbs on chip-related exports to further talks set to take place in London later on Monday. Broad M2 money supply, which measures cash in circulation, and a set of deposits including time deposits to corporates plus household savings, is expected to have increased 8.1% last month, up from the 8.0% in April. Outstanding yuan loans in May were seen matching the pace of growth in April at 7.2% from a year earlier, according to the poll. A broad measure of credit and liquidity that is Total Social Financing (TSF) likely grew to 2.3 trillion yuan in May from 1.16 trillion yuan in April, the poll showed. Any acceleration in government bond issuance could help boost growth in TSF. The measure includes off-balance-sheet forms of financing that exist outside the conventional bank lending system, such as initial public offerings, loans from trust companies and bond sales. China exports growth misses expectations despite tariff truce; imports plunge amid weak consumption

China's exports growth missed expectations in May, despite a temporary trade truce with the U.S. that prompted businesses to frontload shipments and capitalize on the 90-day pause on steep duties. Exports rose 4.8% last month in U.S. dollar terms from a year earlier, customs data showed Monday, shy of Reuters' poll estimates of a 5% jump. Imports plunged 3.4% in May from a year earlier, a drastic drop compared to economists' expectations of a 0.9% fall. Imports had been declining this year, largely owed to sluggish domestic demand. Exports had surged 8.1% in April as a jump in shipment to Southeast Asian countries offset a sharp drop in outbound goods to the U.S. Chinese shipment to the U.S. plunged over 21% in April, as prohibitive tariffs kicked in. U.S. President Donald Trump's prohibitive 145% tariffs on Chinese goods took effect in April, with Beijing retaliating with triple-digit duties and other restrictive measures, such as export controls on critical minerals. U.S. and China struck a preliminary deal in Geneva, Switzerland, last month that led both sides to drop a majority of tariffs. Washington's levies on Chinese goods now stand at 51.1% while Beijing's duties on American imports are at 32.6%, according to think tank Peterson Institute for International Economics. The temporary tariff ceasefire is expected to have triggered a renewed surge in trade as exporters and importers alike in China and the U.S. seek to frontload shipments, sending shipping costs soaring. Chinese Vice Premier and lead trade representative He Lifeng is expected to meet with the U.S. trade negotiation team led by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in London later in the day for renewed trade talks. The second-round of meetings come after tensions flared up again between the two sides, as they accused each other of violating the Geneva trade agreement. Washington had blamed Beijing for slow-walking its pledge to approve the export of additional critical minerals to the U.S., while China criticized the U.S. decision to impose new restrictions on Chinese student visas and additional export restrictions on chips. China's Ministry of Commerce said on Saturday that it would continue to review and approve applications for export of rare earths, citing growing demand for the minerals in robotics and new energy vehicle sectors.

China consumer prices slump again, deepening deflation worries as demand stays weak

China's consumer prices fell for a fourth consecutive month in May, as Beijing's stimulus measures appear insufficient to boost domestic consumption while trade tensions simmer. The consumer price index fell 0.1% from a year earlier, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics released Monday, compared with the median estimate for a 0.2% decline among analysts polled by Reuters. The CPI slipped into negative territory in February, falling 0.7% from a year ago, and continued to post year-on-year declines of 0.1% in March and April. Separately, deflation in the country's factory-gate or producer prices deepened, falling 3.3% from a year earlier in May, a sharper decline than analysts' expectations for a 3.2% drop. The wholesale prices have remained in deflationary territory since October 2022, according to LSEG data. On May 7, Chinese top financial regulators unleashed a flurry of policy steps aimed at bolstering the country's tariff-hit economy. China's central bank cut the key interest rates by 10 basis points to historic-low levels and lowered the reserve requirement ratio, which determines the amount of cash banks must hold in reserves, by 50 basis points. U.S. President Donald Trump had ratcheted up tariffs on Chinese goods to prohibitive levels of 145%, prompting Beijing to retaliate with duties and other restrictive measures, such as export controls on its critical minerals. On May 12, the economy got a relief after U.S. and China struck a preliminary deal in Geneva, Switzerland that led both sides to drop a majority of tariffs. Washington lowered its levies on Chinese goods to 51.1% while Beijing dropped taxes on American imports to 32.6%, according to think tank Peterson Institute for International Economics, allowing some room for both sides to negotiate a broader deal.
