Sheridan Smith unrecognisable in first look at harrowing true-crime drama

ITV has released first-look images for I Fought The Law.
BAFTA-winning actor Sheridan Smith, known for two pints of lager and a packet of crisps, is set to star in ITV's upcoming drama based on harrowing true events, titled I Fought The Law. The drama follows Ann Ming (played by Sheridan Smith, who recently starred in The Castaways), a mother who strives to change the centuries-old Double Jeopardy Law to see her daughter's murderer finally brought to justice after a 15-year battle.

The heartbreaking and inspirational drama, following a mother driven by unimaginable grief, will be made up of four episodes. A release date is yet to be revealed for the series, which is based on Ann Ming's book 'For The Love of Julie'.

Julie was 22 years old when she was murdered and the synopsis continues: "In the wake of multiple police failings, Ann relentlessly pressures the authorities to uncover the truth and ensure the man responsible is brought to justice - despite initially seeming he will get away with murder."

"Driven by love, grief, and extraordinary determination, Ann and her family campaign tirelessly in Julie's name.

"In her steadfast and indomitable style, Ann takes on the entire justice system - challenging the Crown Prosecution Service, the Law Commission, prominent defence barristers in television debates, the Government, the Lord Chancellor, the Attorney General, and two Home Secretaries - as she bravely fought the law."
Ann, who worked as a consultant throughout the production process, said she was "overwhelmed" at the prospect of actress Smith portraying her.
She added: "Having such an iconic and talented actress portray me is truly wonderful.' Smith looks unrecognisable in the first-look images.

She also expressed her pride in playing Ann, saying: "I am so honoured to have been asked to play the role of Ann Ming, a mother so determined to fight for justice for her murdered daughter that she spent 15 years campaigning for the Double Jeopardy Law to be changed.
"She is a truly courageous and remarkable woman to whom we all owe a debt of gratitude."

The series also features Marlowe Chan-Reeves, Olivia Ng, Jake Davies, Victoria Wyant, Kent Riley, Jack James Ryan, Andrew Lancel and Rufus Jones.
I Fought The Law will air on ITV and STV and be available to stream on ITVX and STV Player. It will be followed by I Fought The Law: The Ann Ming Story documentary.
The documentary, which is narrated by Smith, sheds light on the case from Julie's disappearance in 1989 until the murderer was retried and jailed for life in 2006.

Featuring exclusive interviews with Ann, her family and friends and retired police officers, the documentary includes evidence that tells the story of her unwavering resolve to get justice for her daughter.
Her fight for justice has since helped secure other landmark convictions, including those of Stephen Lawrence's killers.
I Fought The Law airs on ITV in the autumn.

Loose Women star GK Barry breaks her silence on brutal ITV cuts as she praises the show for giving women a voice

Loose Women star GK Barry has broken her silence on the upcoming ITV cuts and has revealed whether viewers can expect to still see her on their screens. It was revealed back in May that the show has been axed for half of the year and Lorraine's runtime has been slashed by 30 minutes, as Daytime bosses announced cuts with job losses in excess of 220. According to insiders, once ITV's budget cuts come into effect in January, Loose Women will no longer have A-list guests in the studio, and the broadcast is planned to only consist of the panel debating newsworthy topics from the week. Now, in an exclusive interview with Daily Mail, GK Barry, real name Grace Keeling, has revealed she has no plans to leave the show. The 25-year-old explained: 'I think so, I think I'm still on. I'm pretty sure I'm still there. Obviously the cuts are such a shame, but I'm very glad that Loose Women is still able to be on because I think it's so important to have a women-led show on.' Grace is the youngest ever panellist to appear on Loose Women and was born in the year the ITV daytime show started. Reflecting on her time on the show since joining in 2024, Grace added: 'I'm not gonna lie, I was terrified on my first episode. 'I was like, "None of these women know me, are they gonna think I'm weird," but hand on heart, they are the loveliest women I have ever met in my life. They are so welcoming, and it's just such a fun show. 'I think it's important to have a show on the telly that is all women-based, and it's one of the few that is. The audience are amazing. They always give it large, and you get to speak your mind and no one judges you for it, which is nice.' 'People believe it's just women arguing, but every time I've had a differing opinion on the panel, they're just like, 'that's cool,' no one's had a problem with it.' The influencer has seen her career skyrocket since jetting off to Australia last November for I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! Grace finished in fifth place and was evicted on day 20 of the competition, while McFly's Danny Jones went on to win the ITV show. The presenter has now revealed her latest venture away from her TV commitments. The host of the Saving Grace podcast has collaborated with Echo Wines to create a Limited Edition Summer Berries bottle. Chatting about her partnership with Echo Falls, Grace explained: 'It is so iconic. It was my go-to drink at uni before going out, and I thought I know my audience are going to love this.' Elsewhere, Grace is once again taking her popular podcast Saving Grace to venues across the UK as part of a Jungle Fever Tour special. The show promises a 'night of feral fun' with gossip, special surprises, and celebrity guests. Grace has also been focusing on charity work nd recently visited C9 the Teenage Cancer Trust ward at Addenbrooke's Hospital. She was joined by girlfriend and professional footballer Ella Rutherford to meet cancer staff and bring joy to young people on the unit. Grace went viral after she shared a video showing off what she really looked like behind the glamour of carefully edited Instagram - and it sparked a trend of other influencers doing the same. The video racked up almost 94,000 likes, and social media users from around the world then began replicating the video and using her voiceover to expose how they actually look when posting online. She soon gained a huge following and within a year, had amassed a whopping one million followers on the video-sharing platform. At present, she now has a huge 4.1million followers on TikTok and an impressive 1.8million fans on Instagram. Cambridge-born Grace went on to create her own podcast, Saving Grace, in April 2022 and has interviewed numerous celebrities including Coleen Nolan, Olivia Bowen and Alan Carr. In early 2024, GK took the podcast, which is also uploaded as a vodcast on YouTube, on a sold-out tour around the country.

Love Island finalist 'already lined up for spin-off show after wowing ITV bosses' - and talks are 'kicking off this week'

Love Island finalist and winner Toni Laites has 'already been lined up for spin-off show after wowing ITV bosses'. The pool cabana server, 24, from Connecticut, was crowned winner of the twelfth series of the dating show alongside her man Cach Mirjah Mercer, also 24. Meanwhile Shakira Khan, 22, and Harry Cooksley, 30, placed second, followed by Yasmin Pettet, 24, and Jamie Rhodes, 26, in third, and Ty Isherwood, 23, and Angel Swift, 26, in fourth. After a very complicated journey in the villa, which involved a multiple love triangles with ex Harrison Solomon, 22, and other girls on the programme, she proved a huge fan favourite. Now it sounds like she could be back on our screens sooner than you think. A source told The Sun: 'It's super early days as she's only just left the villa but there's talk of Toni being lined up for a spin off based around her life in Vegas as a cabana girl. 'Shakira and Yas (and Cach!) would feature and her mum would also make appearances. 'Love Island fans have been loving Leslie on the show and on TikTok! 'ITV bosses love the energy that Toni brings to the table and her one-liners. She's got a bright future ahead of her on TV. 'She'll go into talks about future plans this week.' Daily Mail contacted ITV for comment. Toni has made history as the first American contestant to enter the UK Love Island villa. The beauty is from Connecticut, while her new man Cach is from East London. Despite the distance, they are set on making their relationship work. But Toni's journey on the show hasn't been plane sailing. The cabana server entered the villa on day one as the first bombshell and stole Ben Holbrough, 23, from Shakira. But she soon realised that he wasn't The One and ended up building a connection with Conor Phillips, 25. Then on day eight, Harrison entered as a bombshell and picked Toni and Malisha Jordan, 24, to go on a date. Over the next few weeks Toni and Harrison's relationship was very on/off as he continued to get to know other girls, including Helena Ford, 29. After finally getting in a good place, Casa Amor arrived and Harrison got to know Lauren Woods, 26, in the sister villa and decided to bring her back to the main villa. Toni also decided to couple up with Casa Amor hunk Cach. Then when the former flames were back together in the main villa, Harrison kept going between wanting to be with Toni and Lauren. After a chat with Harrison, away from Cach, she made a shock move and decided to recouple with Harrison, which meant that Lauren had to be in a friendship couple with Ty. Little did Toni know that Harrison had taken his relationship with Lauren to the next step and slept with her twice. Lauren got dumped on day 37 and a day later Harrison packed his bags. This meant that Toni and Cach gradually gravitated back towards each other. Love Island airs on ITV2 and is available to stream on ITVX.
