16 Times Celebs' Partners, Friends, And Costars Saved Them From Red Carpet Wardrobe Malfunctions
Many red carpet outfits are as delicate as they are gorgeous, sometimes leading to broken zippers, busted seams, and other wardrobe malfunctions. Luckily, many celebs are surrounded by caring people who help them out when disaster strikes.
Here are 16 times celebs' partners, friends, and costars saved them from red carpet wardrobe malfunctions:
1. During a pre-premiere photo call in London in 2023, the top button of Emily Blunt 's suit jacket popped open.
However, her Oppenheimer costar, Florence Pugh, reacted quickly, using her hand to cover Emily.
Then, Florence turned Emily away from the photographers while she helped her fix her jacket.
2. At the 2025 Tokyo premiere of Wicked, Ariana Grande struggled to walk up a short flight of steps onto the stage in her voluminous gown. Noticing her panic, her costar, Cynthia Erivo, and director, Jon M. Chu, rushed forward to help her.
Ariana shared her appreciation for their help on her Instagram story.
3. At the 2021 Spider-Man: No Way Home premiere, Zendaya needed to adjust the strap of her spiderweb dress, so her boyfriend/costar Tom Holland stepped in front of her to shield her from the cameras while she fixed it.
4. During a Borderlands fan event in 2024, Cate Blanchett had a wardrobe malfunction, but her costar, Jamie Lee Curtis, stood behind her to shield her. Jamie told Entertainment Tonight, "Nothing is going on! You know what is going on? I got her back."
The two stayed closed while posing on the red carpet.
5. At a 2025 photocall to promote The Electric State, Millie Bobby Brown wore a denim miniskirt.
During the press conference, she sat with her legs crossed because of the skirt's short length. A viral clip showed that, when it was time to stand back up, her costar Chris Pratt stood in front of her to shield her in case of a potential wardrobe malfunction.
6. While Elisabetta Canalis was getting ready for the 2010 Oscars, the zipper on her dress broke. Her hairstylist, Jonathan Antin, told Today, "I'm doing Elisabetta's hair, and the back of her dress, her zipper, broke open. The assistant jumped in with a needle and thread and started sewing the back of her dress." Then, George Clooney, Elisabetta's boyfriend at the time, stepped in, telling the assistant, "Hold on a second. I have experience with this. I used to work on suits, honey." Jonathan continued, "So he grabbed the needle and thread and started sewing her zipper in. I got to tell you something, he did an amazing job at cross-stitching."
7. George is the kind of partner who's always looking out for you! At the 2022 Kennedy Center Honors, he stopped posing for pictures to untangle the back of his wife Amal Clooney's gown.
And he made sure to draw attention to how stunning she looked!
8. Similarly, when Alison Brie's skirt got caught on the backdrop at the 2019 Golden Globes, her husband Dave Franco jumped in to fix the train.
Then he stepped back to let her shine!
9. At the European premiere of The Legend of Tarzan in 2016, the zipper on the back of Margot Robbie's Miu Miu dress broke, so her costar, Alexander Skarsgård, helped her fix it.
10. During a 2025 screening of Running Point at the Paley Center, Kate Hudson caught the strap of her top when it broke. Her costars were quick to help her. Justin Theroux fixed the garment while Brenda Song blocked the cameras.
Towards the end of the panel, Kate's top broke again, so Justin jumped up to help her fix it.

11. In 2024, American Ferrera told Entertainment Tonight, "Can I tell you that Hannah [Waddingham] helped me out of and back into my dress at the Golden Globes?" Hannah added, "I did say to you, as the cubicle door was open, I was like, 'Do you want me to stay here and do you back up?'" America said, "She was like, 'I'll wait. I'll wait for you and zip you back up.'"

12. Mandy Moore told People that, at the 2021 Emmys, "I was in this red dress with really thin spaghetti straps. Sweet Sophia Bush walked by to go backstage, and I jumped up to hug her, and a strap just popped. The next commercial break, I ran back there, and Sophia had told them, so they had red thread ready to go. Thank God for her!"

13. At the 2013 UK premiere of Star Trek Into Darkness, Zoe Saldaña's skirt got messed up by the wind.

Her costars, Chris Pine, Alice Eve, Zachary Quinto, and Benedict Cumberbatch worked together to help her straighten it out.

14. At the Vox Lux premiere during the 2018 Venice Film Festival, Raffey Cassidy's gown seemingly got tangled in her shoes. So, her costars, Natalie Portman, Stacy Martin, and Brady Corbet, helped her fix the issue.

15. According to E! News, at the 2014 premiere of The Theory of Everything, Felicity Jones's train almost got caught in an escalator, but her costar, Eddie Redmayne, pulled her skirt out of the way in time.

16. And finally, in a since-deleted Instagram post, Kate Beckinsale shared a story about the time Keanu Reeves saved her from a wardrobe malfunction when they were promoting Much Ado About Nothing at the 1993 Cannes Film Festival. She said, "I had bought the bodysuit in the Sock Shop at the airport, and when I got in the car to drive to the premiere with Denzel and Pauletta Washington, all the poppers in the crotch popped themselves open, and it flipped up like a roller blind. I didn't feel it was appropriate to go delving around in my undercarriage with all of us in the back of the car, so I just quietly panicked."

She continued, "I walked out onto the biggest red carpet of my life and whispered to Keanu and Robert Sean Leonard what had happened. In this picture, I am holding the front gusset down, and the two of them are holding the back gusset. Absolute legends who may not even have fully understood the physics of what was happening or even heard the word 'gusset' before, but both jumped in to save me, no questions asked."

Paul Tazewell makes awards history again, becomes only 2nd costume designer to win Oscar and Tony in same year
Three months after making history as the first Black man to win the Oscar for Best Costume Design for his work on Wicked, Paul Tazewell scored the Tony Award on Sunday for Best Costume Design of a Musical for Death Becomes Her. That makes him just the second person in history to win an Oscar and Tony for costume design in the same calendar year. "Having been a part of Death Becomes Her and creating a piece of theater where people can be laughing and joyful, I think that that makes a huge difference in people's lives," Tazewell told Gold Derby a week ago. "That's why I do what I do. Cecil Beaton — won his first two Tonys in 1955 for Quadrille and 1957 for My Fair Lady; won his first Oscar in 1959 for Gigi; won his third Tony in 1960 for Saratoga; won another Oscar in 1965 for the film version of My Fair Lady; won his fourth and final Tony in 1970 for Coco. Anthony Powell — won the Tony in 1963 for The School for Scandal; won three Oscars in 1973 for Travels with My Aunt, 1979 for Death on the Nile, and 1981 for Tess. Theoni V. Aldredge — won the Oscar in 1975 for The Great Gatsby; won three Tonys in 1977 for Annie, 1980 for Barnum, and 1984 for La Cage aux Folles. Tim Chappel & Lizzy Gardiner — won the Oscar in 1995 for The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert; won the Tony in 2011 for its subsequent stage musical adaptation. Ann Roth — won her first Oscar in 1997 for The English Patient; won the Tony in 2013 for The Nance; won her second Oscar in 2021 for Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. Until Sunday, Sharaff was the only one who managed to win both in the same calendar year, which in her case, was in 1952. Tazewell also has an Emmy for The Wiz Live! (2016), so he's three-quarters to an EGOT, only missing a Grammy. Tony Awards biggest moments: Cynthia Erivo holds space, Nicole Scherzinger wins big
Tony Awards biggest moments: Cynthia Erivo holds space, Nicole Scherzinger wins big Show Caption Hide Caption Cynthia Erivo arrives at Tony Awards red carpet in an intricate gown Cynthia Erivo and Cole Escola pose for cameras wearing an intricate gown at the Tony Awards red carpet. NEW YORK – Broadway has fallen head over heels with a pair of helper robots. "Maybe Happy Ending," a heart-tugging romantic dramedy about androids in near-future South Korea, was the big winner at the Tony Awards June 8, taking home six prizes, including best musical, best director (Michael Arden), and best actor (Darren Criss). The fiercely original show opened to glowing reviews and meager box office last fall, but has gradually become one of the hottest tickets in New York – a rare word-of-mouth success story in the ultra-competitive Broadway landscape. This year's ceremony saw the joyous Afro-Cuban musical "Buena Vista Social Club" and Netflix prequel play "Stranger Things: The First Shadow" scoop up multiple prizes apiece. Kara Young ("Purpose"), Francis Jue ("Yellow Face") and lifetime achievement award winner Harvey Fierstein delivered some of the most stirring speeches of the night, while the Pulitzer Prize-winning "Purpose" conquered the unlikely hit "Oh, Mary!" for best play. Here are more of the biggest moments from this year's star-studded event: Tony Awards 2025 winners list: 'Maybe Happy Ending,' 'Eureka Day,' more win honors Tonys host Cynthia Erivo 'holds space' with Oprah Winfrey in opening number At the top of the telecast, Cynthia Erivo playfully shot down a bevy of suggestions about how to add pizzazz to her opening number. (Blast George Clooney out of a human cannon? Hard pass.) The "Color Purple" powerhouse then ran into Winfrey in the wings, asking her, "What do you do when everyone is telling you what you need to do?" Winfrey dispensed her wisdom, saying, "Forget about them, babe. The only thing you need to do is be yourself." Grinning, Erivo proceeded to grab Winfrey's finger – recreating her viral "holding space" meme with "Wicked" co-star Ariana Grande from last fall. Watch: Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo sing 'For Good' in first 'Wicked: For Good' trailer "There's no place like home," Erivo said onstage, in one of her many nods to "Wicked" and "The Wizard of Oz" throughout the night. "And Broadway has always been mine." Sarah Snook says 'Succession' group chat has been going wild since her Tony win Sarah Snook, who's best known to HBO fans as Shiv Roy on "Succession," earned her first Tony Award for best leading actress in a play for "The Picture of Dorian Gray," giving a marathon performance as 26 different characters in the one-person show. Several "Succession" alums have graced Broadway this past year, including Jeremy Strong ("The Enemy of the People"), Kieran Culkin ("Glengarry Glen Ross"), Juliana Canfield ("Stereophonic"), and Molly Griggs ("John Proctor is the Villain"). "We haven't done much flaunting of awards in photos, but it's such a special group chat," Snook told reporters backstage. "It's a really special group of people and we're all theater nerds deep down." Last spring, Cate Blanchett's production company Dirty Films acquired movie rights to bring "Dorian Gray" to the screen. Snook said that she hasn't yet heard anything about the potential adaptation, although she would be open to reprising her roles. "I don't know how this gets turned into a film," Snook admitted. "It's a particularly complex piece to do as a theater show. Dramaturgically, it holds up, and I think Kip would be an incredible director for that project. And if I got to be a part of that, that would be a dream come true." Nicole Scherzinger, Audra McDonald, 'Hamilton' reunion hit Tony performance highs To celebrate the 10th anniversary of "Hamilton," Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr. and the original Broadway cast took the stage for an electrifying medley of the most beloved songs from the groundbreaking hip-hop musical, including "My Shot," "The Schuyler Sisters," "You'll Be Back" and "The Room Where It Happens." Audra McDonald also brought the audience to its feet with her ferociously emotional rendition of "Rose's Turn" from "Gypsy." 'Hamilton' reunion! Watch original stars perform 'Satisfied' at film screening Earlier in the night, "Sunset Boulevard" leading lady Nicole Scherzinger took our breath away with a stunning rendition of "As If We Never Said Goodbye," introduced by the show's original Broadway star, Glenn Close. 'Sunset Boulevard' review: Nicole Scherzinger is transcendent in bold new revival Scherzinger went on to win the Tony for best leading actress in a musical, in what was considered a neck-in-neck race with McDonald. 'Maybe Happy Ending' star Darren Criss dedicates Tony Award to his wife and kids In one of the closest races of the night, Criss took home best leading actor in a musical for "Maybe Happy Ending," trouncing formidable contenders Jonathan Groff ("Just in Time") and Tom Francis ("Sunset Boulevard"). The former "Glee" star got choked up as he thanked his wife, Mia, for helping raise their two young children amid his demanding Broadway schedule. "The real hero about this, for this remarkable journey, is my wife, Mia, who took a massive swing on allowing me to do this and to allow this crazy upheaval in our life to make this logistically possible," Criss said. More: Darren Criss on why playing a robot in 'Maybe Happy Ending' makes him want to cry "And for bearing the brunt of raising two tiny friends under 3 so that I could raise a singing robot at the Belasco Theatre eight times a week. Mia, you're the very pedestal that upholds the shiny, spinny bit in our lives, and your love and your support for me and our beautiful children, combined with the miracle of working on something as magical as 'Maybe Happy Ending' has been and will always be, award enough." Cole Escola sprints onstage, thanks Grindr hookup in Tony speech Escola, the deranged genius behind "Oh, Mary!", won best leading actor in a play for their inspired turn as first lady Mary Todd Lincoln. Channeling Bernadette Peters in an off-the-shoulder Wiederhoeft gown, Escola feverishly sprinted to the stage, where they thanked fellow best actor nominees, including George Clooney and Daniel Dae Kim. "It's an honor to be in your company," Escola said. "It's been a sincere pleasure spending time with you over warm salads at all these (Tony) luncheons." They continued to thank their mom and their "whole gang" of friends. "Oh, and Tebow from Grindr and Amy Sedaris, who always reminds me how important she is to me. And she is." Written by Escola, "Oh, Mary!" imagines Lincoln as an alcoholic wannabe cabaret star. Asked by reporters whether they would consider an Eleanor Roosevelt comedy next, Escola joked that she is "played out. It would have to be something original, not another historical figure."
