Neeraj Chopra Gets Candid About His Journey in an Exclusive Conversation with Duolingo English Test

The Duolingo English Test (DET), a global leader in digital English proficiency assessment, hosted a fireside chat featuring Olympic and World Champion Neeraj Chopra. In a heartfelt conversation with select DET test takers, Neeraj opened up like never before, sharing his most honest and personal thoughts yet on his journey of overcoming challenges and representing India on a global stage. He offered students candid advice and encouragement as they prepare to step out of their own comfort zones and build a life overseas.
Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra in conversation with Duolingo English Test takers Shalini, Shreyas, and Jesai during an exclusive fireside chat
The conversation brought together three DET test takers, Shalini, Shreyas, and Jesai who, much like Neeraj, are embarking on a journey that demands courage, resilience and the ability to adapt to new environments. Their dialogue explored this shared experience, highlighting how the mindset needed for sporting success is not too different from what students need to succeed abroad.

Success comes when you keep showing up
'When you leave home for the first time, it's not easy. You miss your family and your routine. But when you stay focused on your dream, it gets easier,' said Neeraj. 'You need to have a strong mindset. Just keep showing up and giving your best, that's how success comes.'
Sharing a personal story from early in his career, Neeraj recalled the time he broke his wrist during training. 'I had just started my journey and had to wear a plaster for 40 days. I thought my career was over,' he said. But rather than give up, he stayed focused on his dream of representing India. Once recovered, he trained three to four times a day, lost the 10-12 kg gained during recovery, and within just six weeks, he won a national medal. 'It's all about strength, resilience and a strong mindset,' he added.
Lessons from Life Abroad
Talking about his experiences training overseas, Neeraj shared candidly, 'The biggest challenge for Indians abroad is food.' His advice to students 'Learn basic cooking before moving out. It's important to be independent. Learn to cook, do your chores, and make your own decisions. You might make a few mistakes but that's how you learn.' He also emphasized the value of self-reliance: 'Living away from home teaches you a lot. At home, you often rely on your family. But stepping out helps you understand life and yourself better,' and urges students to be patient, take small steps and keep learning.
Breaking Language Barriers
Language was another challenge discussed by students. Neeraj shared his own journey with English, explaining how he learned vocabulary from his coaches and even practiced using the Duolingo app. 'It felt good when Duolingo said I got 100 percent. I wasn't a top-scoring student in school, so this kind of learning made me feel proud' he said. 'I've had coaches from Australia, Germany, and now the Czech Republic. So, I've picked up a few words from each language. I try to learn a few and greet people in their own language.'
The fireside chat was part of an ongoing collaboration between the Duolingo English Test and Neeraj Chopra, designed to inspire young Indians to pursue their global education dreams with confidence.
Shalini, Shreyas, and Jesai are also the first DETermined Ambassadors, who have aced the test and are now part of an exclusive community of DET Takers. They will participate in a programme to gain access to exclusive opportunities, tools and resources, as they help build a community of DET takers who have taken the test to fly to their dream destinations around the world.

Marcus Rashford diagnoses Manchester United's problems after loan move to FC Barcelona: 'Direction is always changing…'

Marcus Rashford completed a loan move earlier this summer that saw him move on from an increasingly fractured relationship with his boyhood club Manchester United, joining Spanish giants FC Barcelona to further bolster their dynamite front line. English forward Marcus Rashford has joined FC Barcelona on loan this season.(AFP) A childhood fan who has played for the Premier League giants since his days in their academy, Rashford nonetheless had scathing criticism of how United have gone about their business as they try to return to the top of world football. Appearing on the Stick to Football podcast alongside former Barcelona and England great Gary Lineker as well as Micah Richards, the 27-year-old put all the cards on the table to explain what has gone wrong with the team not having won the Premier League in 12 years. "You see it with any team that's been successful over a period of time: they have principles that any coach that comes in, any player that comes in, has to align to these principles or be able to add to these principles,' explained Rashford regarding his time at United. 'Whereas at times I feel like United have just been: we're hungry to win, so we'll always try to adapt and to sign players that fit this system. But it's reactionary.' 'You might win some cup tournaments…' Since legendary coach Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013, United have gone through six different permanent managers, with Rashford himself having played under five in his nine years since his senior debut. "If your direction's always changing, you can't expect to be able to win the league. Yeah, you might win some cup tournaments, but it's because you do have a good coach and you do have good players and you have match winners in your team - you're not there by accident,' explained Rashford, who has helped United to FA Cups, League Cups, and the Europa League, but never to a league title. 'You have to make a plan and stick with it…' The England international further went on to explain that his time away from United, first with a loan at Aston Villa at the start of this year and now following his move to Spain, has helped him understand why the team he supports has struggled in such a way. "We've been way below where we deem United to be. But then if you take a step back, which I've been able to do, especially over the last six months - what do you expect? People say we've been in a transition for years. To be in a transition, you have to start the transition,' said Rashford. 'So it's like the actual transition's not started yet,' explained the winger. "To start a transition, you have to make a plan and stick to it. So this is the thing that I feel - it's not easy. Because if it's not going well, the fans demand [change].' "But this is where I speak about being realistic with what your situation is. I feel like we've had that many different managers and different ideas and different strategies in order to win … you end up in the middle of no man's land,' concluded Rashford, who will be trying to play his part in a first league title with Barcelona, with an eye on the Champions League as well.

Two-Time Champion Venus Williams Receives Wild Card For US Open Singles

Last Updated: Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Williams will become the oldest singles entrant at the US Open since Renee Richards, who was 47 in 1981. Two-time former champion Venus Williams is set to make her 25th US Open appearance after receiving a wild card into the women's singles. The 45-year-old American recently returned from a 16-month layoff after a serious health scare and was among eight women's wild card recipients named on Wednesday by tournament organisers. Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Williams will become the oldest singles entrant at the US Open since Renee Richards, who was 47 in 1981. Williams underwent surgery last year to remove uterine fibroids and missed most of the season. She made her comeback last month and became the oldest WTA match winner since Martina Navratilova at the age of 47 at Wimbledon in 2004, beating Peyton Stearns in the first round of the DC Open. Williams, the 2000 Sydney Olympic singles champion, has also won five Wimbledon singles titles to go along with her 2000 and 2001 US Open triumphs. She lost in the final in New York on her debut to Martina Hingis as a teenager in 1997. Venus also finished runner-up to younger sister Serena in 2002. The most recent of her 49 WTA titles came in 2016 at the Taiwan Open. Williams will also compete in the new-look US Open mixed doubles next week alongside Reilly Opelka. France's Caroline Garcia, 31, was given a wild card into what will be her final Grand Slam before retirement. Her best run at a major came when she reached the US Open semi-finals three years ago. Americans Clervie Ngounoue, Julieta Pareja, Caty McNally, Valerie Glozman and Alyssa Ahn are other wild card recipients, as is Australian Talia Gibson. On the men's side, American players Brandon Holt, Nishesh Basavareddy, Tristan Boyer, Emilio Nava, Stefan Dostanic and Darwin Blanch all earned wild cards. The final two went to France's Valentin Royer and Australia's Tristan Schoolkate. The US Open singles main draw begins on August 24.
