More Indian Students Choosing New Zealand For Overseas Education. Here's Why

NDTV08-07-2025
As Indian students look overseas for academic and career advancement, New Zealand is emerging as a key destination of choice. While countries like the US, UK, Canada, and Australia have traditionally dominated the study-abroad landscape, changing global education policies and student priorities are prompting a shift toward newer, stable destinations.
Among them, New Zealand is gaining traction for its quality education, post-study work oppoutnities, and high living standards.
Surge in Indian Enrolments
According to Education New Zealand (ENZ), enrolments from India rose by 34% between January and August 2024 - from 7,930 in 2023 to 10,640 in 2024. Indian students now make up 11% of all international university enrolments in the country, ranking second after Chinese students.
Notably, data from IDP Education shows that the number of Indian female students in New Zealand universities doubled between 2023 and 2024, highlighting a growing preference among students seeking safe and supportive academic environments.
High-Quality Education Across Disciplines
New Zealand's eight universities are globally ranked, with all listed in the QS World University Rankings 2026. Leading institutions include the University of Auckland (ranked 65), University of Otago (197), and Massey University (230).
These universities offer strong programmes in various fields such as Data Science, Engineering, Fintech, Business Analytics, Nursing, Hospitality, and Education.
Affordable Education and Living Costs
The cost of studying in New Zealand ranges between NZD 20,000 (Rs 10,26,953) to 40,000 (Rs 20,53,906) annually for international students, which remains competitive compared to the US and UK, and on par with Australia and Canada. With manageable living expenses and access to part-time work rights during study, the country offers a cost-effective option for Indian students.
Flexible Post-Study Work Options
One of New Zealand's key draws is its flexible post-study work (PSW) policy. International students completing at least 30 weeks of a Master's or Doctoral programme are eligible for a three-year PSW visa.
In late 2024, Immigration New Zealand extended these benefits to students pursuing shorter, stackable postgraduate qualifications - allowing those completing a Postgraduate Diploma followed by a Master's to access full work rights. As of March 2025, the country's unemployment rate stood at 5.1%, offering a favourable outlook for graduates entering the job market.
Focus on Bilateral Educational Ties
New Zealand is also strengthening institutional ties with India. In 2024, Education New Zealand signed partnership agreements with Indian institutions and state agencies including IIM Ahmedabad, GIFT City, and the Karnataka State Higher Education Council. These collaborations aim to foster research, student exchange, and academic cooperation.
Quality of Life and Community Support
Beyond academics, New Zealand ranks high on global indices of peace, happiness, and work-life balance. It placed 12th on Global Finance's 2025 Happiness Index and has been ranked third on the Global Peace Index. The country also topped Remote's Global Life-Work Balance Index for the third consecutive year. With over 270,000 people of Indian origin living in New Zealand, students benefit from a culturally familiar environment and supportive diaspora networks.

India overtakes China to become world's top smartphone maker for the US

India has overtaken China to become the leading exporter of smartphone devices sold in the United States, driven by Apple Inc's decision to scale up iPhone assembly in the country. Shipments from India accounted for 44 per cent of the US market in the quarter ending June 2025, according to data from Canalys. Vietnam, home to most of Samsung Electronics Co's production, ranked second. In contrast, China's share of estimated shipments plummeted from over 60 per cent a year ago to just 25 per cent. Apple's India manufacturing push The shift is a result of Apple increasing its manufacturing capacity in India, alongside broader efforts by smartphone makers to 'frontload device inventories amid tariff concerns,' Canalys researchers wrote. The number of smartphones manufactured in India more than tripled compared to the same period last year. Although Apple's iPhone shipments to the US fell by 11 per cent, this decline was attributed to earlier-than-usual bulk shipments. India-made iPhone output rises to $22 bn Apple assembled iPhones worth $22 billion in India in the 12 months ending March, marking a nearly 60 per cent rise from the previous year. Most of these devices were produced at Foxconn Technology Group's facility. Tata Group's electronics arm, which recently acquired Wistron Corp and oversees Pegatron Corp's operations, has also become a major supplier. Trump seeks manufacturing jobs in US Apple and other technology companies have been gradually moving production away from China to reduce risks associated with tariffs and rising geopolitical tensions. India and Vietnam have become prominent alternatives in this strategy. This shift has drawn criticism from US President Donald Trump, who has been urging firms to bring manufacturing jobs back to the United States. Despite its global diversification, Apple continues to manufacture most of its iPhones in China and has no smartphone production in the US. However, the company has committed to hiring more domestically and investing $500 billion in the US over the next four years. China disrupts Apple's India expansion efforts Apple's shift towards India has not gone unnoticed by Chinese authorities. The Chinese government has reportedly taken steps to undermine Apple's competitive advantage abroad. Around a year ago, it delayed approvals for machinery Apple needed to import for iPhone production in India. In a more recent move, Chinese Customs indefinitely withheld machines required for retrofitting assembly lines to manufacture the forthcoming iPhone 17. Additionally, Beijing pressured Foxconn to withdraw over 300 Chinese engineers and technicians from its facilities in India. These experts were initially deployed to assist with technology transfer and worker training.

Largecap auto components stock hits record high, zooms 53% from April low

Bosch Limited share price today Shares of Bosch Limited hit a record high of ₹39,598.30; gaining 4 per cent on the BSE in Tuesday's intra-day trade on healthy business outlook. The stock price of the largecap auto components & equipments company surpassed its previous high of ₹ 39,052 touched on October 9, 2024. It bounced back 53 per cent from its 52-week low of ₹ 25,938.20, which it had recorded on April 7, 2025. Bosch shares turn ex-date for dividend of ₹512 per share The board of directors of Bosch at their meeting held on May 27, 2025 recommended a final dividend of ₹512 per equity share of ₹10 each, subject to approval of shareholders. The company fixed July 29, 2025 as record date for determining entitlement of the shareholders to final dividend. Strong March 2025 quarter (Q4FY25) performance Bosch's Q4FY25 operational numbers have been ahead of estimates primarily due to strong revenue growth. However, despite this, Profit after tax (PAT) at ₹ 550 crore was below analyst's estimate of ₹ 580 crore due to a higher tax rate. Revenue jumped 16 per cent year-on-year (YoY) to ₹ 4,910 crore, primarily driven by 14.9 per cent YoY growth in the mobility business. Margins remained stable YoY at 13.2 per cent. Annual report - Bosch Limited The Government of India's forward-looking policies, including the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, Design Linked Incentives (DLI), and the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), alongside a strong focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI), are truly encouraging and underpin our strategic investments in these key areas, the management said in its FY25 annual report. Domestically, the growing affordability of the Indian middle class continues to drive demand for sophisticated automotive products and solutions. This demographic dividend, coupled with increasing disposable incomes, presents significant growth opportunities across all automotive segments. The future of mobility is increasingly software defined; transitioning from primarily mechanical systems with embedded software to intelligent connected systems that offer enhanced safety, efficiency, and user experience. The management said the company is strategically positioned to capitalize on this transformative trend with innovative, reliable, and cost-effective solutions. According to media sources, the Indian government has approved a new mandate requiring all new two-wheelers - scooters, motorcycles, and bikes - to be equipped with anti-lock braking systems (ABS), regardless of engine capacity, starting January 1, 2026. This regulation extends the current requirement, which applies only to models >= 125cc, to the entire two-wheeler segment. The move aims to significantly reduce road accidents and fatalities, particularly head injuries, as two-wheelers account for a significant portion of both accidents and deaths on Indian roads. According to analysts at ICICI Securities, this will provide new opportunities for the ancillary space with annual opportunity size pegged at ~₹3,000-6,000 crore with major beneficiaries being Bosch and Endurance Technologies among others. Meanwhile, the auto demand outlook continues to be subdued across key segments in the near term. Further, while Bosch continues to work towards the localization of new technologies, given the long gestation projects, its margin is likely to remain under pressure with no visibility of any material improvement, at least in the near term, Motilal Oswal Financial Services said in the Q4 result update. About the Bosch Group The Bosch Group is a leading supplier of software, technology & services in the areas of mobility solutions, industrial technology, consumer goods, and energy & building technology. The Group boasts its largest development center outside of Germany in India, which offers comprehensive engineering and technology solutions. Operating through an extensive portfolio of 15 companies, Bosch India synergizes top-notch German engineering with the entrepreneurial spirit of India.
