Work begins on Urban Primary Health Centre building in Nagapattinam after much delay
Two years ago, the UPHC was temporarily shifted to a Health and Wellness Centre on Pazha Street in Ward 30, after the old building was declared unsafe. The temporary location — situated on a narrow and congested stretch — met with criticism because of water stagnation and poor road condition, which made it challenging for patients to reach the facility.
Although ₹1.2 crore had been sanctioned under the National Health Mission, the demolition and reconstruction work faced significant delays. Lack of progress prompted several appeals from residents, civil society organisations, and political representatives urging the authorities to expedite the work.
K. Venkadesan, town secretary of the CPI(M), said this was the only UPHC serving Nagapattinam town. 'The delay has caused great hardship to the public. The construction must be completed at the earliest without excuses,' he said.
Officials from the Health Department said the construction was now under way and was expected to be completed within six months.

Ashakirana Kendras to offer free cataract surgeries
BENGALURU: Deputy Chief Minister and Bangalore Urban Development Minister DK Shivakumar and Health and Family Welfare Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao inaugurated the "Ashakirana Drishti Kendra" at Dr Balagangadharanath Swamiji Multi-Speciality Hospital in Govindarajanagar M C Layout on Thursday. This was in collaboration with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), National Health Mission, National Blindness and Visual Impairment Control Programme and Sight Saver Swayamsevak Sanstha. With 11 such centres spread across BBMP, the municipality aims to offer free cataract surgeries and spectacles to the poor and needy free of cost. "Among the 11 Ashakirana Drishti Kendras, five centres will be provided with human resources, surgical equipment and spectacle distribution services under CSR initiatives," said Sirajuddin Madani, Chief Health Officer (CHO), BBMP. He added these centres are part of a total of 393 designated Ashakirana Vision Centres operating in Karnataka. The CHO also added that the facility will be available at JJR Nagar Public Hospital, Halasuru Maternity Hospital, H Siddaiah Road Maternity Hospital, Hosahalli Maternity Hospital, R C Pura Maternity Hospital, Banashankari Maternity Hospital, Gauri Palya Maternity Hospital, Rampur Hospital, Indiranagar Public Hospital, Jayanagar Public Hospital and KC General Hospital, Malleswaram. Local MLA Priya Krishna, Special Commissioner of the Health Department Suralkar Vikas Kishore, National Health Mission Director Avinash Memon Rajendran, Zonal Joint Commissioner Sangappa and other officials were present.

Health and Wellness centres inaugurated in Dindigul
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, through video conference, inaugurated Primary Health Centres (PHC), Urban Primary Health Centres (UPHC) and Wellness Centres in Dindigul district on Thursday. Minister for Food and Civil Supplies R. Sakkarapani and others were present during the inauguration of the Primary Health Centre in Markampatti in Oddanchatram in Dindigul district. The Chief Minister inaugurated 208 Urban Health and Wellness Centres and 50 Primary and Urban Health Centres across Tamil Nadu through video conference from Chennai. In Dindigul district, PHCs were opened at Markampatti, Adalur, Pandrimalai and Urban Primary Health Centre was inaugurated in Kodaikanal. Speaking on the occasion, Minister Sakkarapani said that the new PHC at Markampatti was constructed at a cost of Rs.1.20 crore. Work was underway to improve infrastructure facilities at Oddanchatram Government Hospital at a cost of Rs.25 crore., he said. Education and healthcare were the two eyes of the government and there was focus on the two sectors, he added.

Stalin inaugurates Katpadi's first UPHC
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday virtually inaugurated three Urban Primary Health Centres (UPHCS) in Vellore and Ranipet districts, including the first such facility in Katpadi, ending a long-standing demand of residents. Health officials said a UPHC serves a population of 50,000 and at present, 13 centres have been functioning within the Vellore Corporation limits. 'The UPHC in Katpadi will focus on all government health programmes, including vaccination and general health check-up,' R. Lakshmanan, Commissioner, Vellore Corporation, told The Hindu. Built at a cost of ₹1.2 crore each, the UPHCs at Katpadi and Otteri in Vellore feature better facilities such as separate cabins for a duty doctor, four nurses, and other staff; a common visitors' hall; separate wards for specialised treatment; laboratory facilities; and well-furnished pharmacy with additional stocks. They will function between 8 a.m and 3 p.m on all days except Sundays. They have operation theatres and six beds for in-patients. Adequate parking space for ambulances and other vehicles are also provided. 'Now, women and senior citizens can easily gain access to better healthcare facilities. Earlier, we had to travel to the health centre in Old Town (Vellore), around 8 km from here,' said C. Pavitra, a resident. In Ranipet, which has 36 PHCs, the UPHC was opened at Kavanur village near Arcot town. Earlier, residents had to travel at least 8-10 km to reach Thimiri, the nearest town that has a health centre. Land for the new centre was donated by residents. On an average, each PHC should span two acres, whereas an upgraded health centre should cover five acres to provide more facilities such as staff quarters, additional buildings, and parking facilities. Five Urban Health and Wellness Centres, each built at ₹25 lakh, were also opened within the Vellore Corporation limits. The centre will have a doctor, a nurse, and a sanitation inspector. Each centre will function between 8 a.m. and noon, and 4 p.m.-8 p.m. on all days.
