Gun Bombers defender sent for scans on hamstring

Yahoo02-07-2025
On the cusp of returning from injury, ace Essendon defender Zach Reid has been sent for scans after feeling tightness in his hamstring.
Sidelined with a hamstring strain for the past five weeks, the highly rated but injury-prone Reid had been pressing his case for selection.
But after training fully at Tullamarine on Wednesday, the 23-year-old experienced tightness late in the session and has gone for scans.

Reid has suffered a difficult start to his AFL career after being drafted with pick 10 in 2020.
He had been restricted to just nine games across his first four seasons, but had been enjoying a breakout year before being injured in the Dreamtime win against Richmond six weeks ago.
Reid's setback comes after Essendon's bye week was blighted by injuries on the training track to Mason Redman, Darcy Parish and Kyle Langford.
Redman (hamstring) will miss at least this Saturday's clash with Gold Coast at Marvel Stadium, but Parish (calf) and Langford (quad) have been ruled out indefinitely.
Fourteen players were on the Bombers' injury update, released on Tuesday, with four of them out for the season.
Before training on Wednesday, Essendon coach Brad Scott attempted to focus on the positives instead of the dire state of their injury list.
"We're just in a situation at the moment where we've just got to roll on," Scott said.
"We'll select 23 fit and very capable players this weekend.
"That's the thing about the headlines, 'injury crisis' and all these things.
"I guarantee you it's not a crisis to those players who are on the fringes.
"It's an opportunity to put their name up in lights and get their opportunity.
"It's clearly not ideal, we'd love to have better availability, but we've had players emerge who wouldn't have had their opportunity otherwise."

Crows star could be investigated over alleged comment

Izak Rankine, one of Adelaide's most important players, could come under AFL investigation a week out from the finals. Late on Sunday night several media outlets reported that Rankine may be in trouble for an alleged comment to a Collingwood opponent during Saturday night's massive win. That three-point success in front of a packed house at Adelaide Oval guaranteed the Crows will finish in the top two and secure a home qualifying final. This will be the Crows' first finals appearance since they lost the 2017 grand final to Richmond. Their premierships were in 1997-98. Rankine was among Adelaide's best against the Magpies, kicking a goal late in the second term that gave them the lead for the first time in the match. If a league investigation was to find him guilty of misconduct and he was suspended, it would be a significant blow to Adelaide's finals campaign. There was no official confirmation from the AFL or either club as of late Sunday night that there had been an alleged incident. Adelaide will play North Melbourne next Saturday at Marvel Stadium, their last game before the finals. Rankine, 25, has played 22 games this season for a career total of 105. He is yet to play in a final, having started his AFL career with three seasons at Gold Coast before the Adelaide native was traded to the Crows after the 2022 season.

Former Vol lights Al Davis Memorial Torch ahead of Raiders-49ers game

San Francisco defeated Las Vegas, 22-19, Saturday in NFL preseason Week 2 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. Former Vol defensive back Terry McDaniel lit the Al Davis Memorial Torch before the game. The torch is traditionally lit before each home game and began on Oct. 18, 2011. The Al Davis Memorial Torch is a tribute to Davis' legacy as the Raiders' owner, Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, AFL coach of the year, AFL commissioner and an architect of the Raiders' Commitment to Excellence. McDaniel played for the Raiders from 1988-97. He appeared in 143 games, including 137 starts. He was a five-time Pro Bowl (1992-96) selection, a First-Team All-Pro in 1993 and a three-time Second-Team All-Pro (1992, 1994-95). McDaniel was a first-round selection by the Raiders (No. 9 overall) in the 1988 NFL draft. He totaled 502 tackles, 35 interceptions and eight touchdowns. McDaniel played for the Vols from 1984-88 after redshirting during the 1983 season. He began his collegiate career as a wide receiver before playing defensive back. McDaniel also competed for Tennessee's track and field team. He earned First-Team All-SEC honors in 1987. More: Johnny Majors through the years Follow Vols Wire on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter).
