Emergency services will be taking part in a joint training exercise at a harbour in Guernsey later.Guernsey Ports said the emergency scenario would be based on "an electric vehicle fire in a busy car check in area".It said the exercise, scheduled to take place between 09:00 and 12:00 GMT, aims to test the emergency response - including firefighting, evacuation and other health and safety procedures.Assistant harbour master Mike Harris said it was "essential our emergency services get regular opportunities to train together".
'Noise and activity'
Mr Harris said: "Public safety is our highest priority and the exercise will test our procedures and help us improve our emergency plans where necessary. "People around the Town seafront may notice increased noise and activity from emergency service vehicles during the exercise, and we ask for their patience and understanding during this time."Staff from Guernsey Ports, Guernsey Fire and Rescue Service, Ambulance and Rescue Guernsey, Bailiwick Law Enforcement, the Joint Emergency Services Control Centre, Condor Ferries and Civil Protection volunteers were set to take part.
There will be smoke machines and people should "not be alarmed if they see smoke billowing from this area" while the training exercise is under way, Guernsey Ports said.It said access to the eastern end of the north approach road would be suspended until 13:00 GMT.

Five killed in China's Xinjiang after cable on suspension bridge snaps

BEIJING, Aug 7 (Reuters) - Five people were killed after a cable on a suspension bridge snapped in northwestern China's Xinjiang region, causing them to fall off the bridge, state-run news agency Xinhua reported on Thursday. The incident, which took place at 6:18 p.m. (10:18 GMT) on Wednesday in a sightseeing area in the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, injured a further 24 people, Xinhua said. The scenic area has been closed while the incident is being investigated, Xinhua said. Videos circulating on social media, verified by Reuters, show a low-hanging suspension bridge tilted to one side with handrails made from cables dangling between the walkway and the ground below. Part of the bridge hangs over a river. The videos also show at least two people lying on the ground below the bridge. In one of the videos, a casualty was put onto a wooden plank, while another video shows people carrying the makeshift stretcher away from the scene. The 65-square-kilometre (25-square-mile) area, called Xiata, boasts a natural landscape including a mountain pass, a valley, and a river as well as cultural remains such as ruins of an ancient town, public information shows. The central government has sent a task force to the site of the accident to oversee the investigation and the treatment of the injured, Xinhua said in a separate report.

Light aircraft crashes in Kenya's capital killing six people

NAIROBI, Aug 7 (Reuters) - A small plane carrying medical staff crashed in a densely-populated neighbourhood in Kenya's capital on Thursday afternoon, killing six people, local authorities said. The Cessna plane, run by AMREF Flying Doctors, came down as it was flying to Hargeisa, the capital of Somalia's breakaway territory of Somaliland, the charity said in a statement. Kiambu County Commissioner Henry Wafula said the four people on board and two people on the ground were killed. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority said the plane took off from Wilson Airport at 02:14 PM (1114 GMT) and lost contact with air traffic control three minutes later. "We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident involving an air ambulance mission," KCAA said in a statement. One witness, who asked not to be named, told Reuters she heard a loud sound, then saw a fireball and debris scattered over the neighbourhood. Unverified videos shared on social media showed firefighters trying to douse burning debris inside what appeared to be a residential compound. Crashes involving light aircraft are relatively common in eastern Africa. In April last year, Kenya's military chief was among 10 people killed when their military helicopter crashed shortly after take-off.

Several hurt after passenger trail derails in southern Germany

A regional passenger train has derailed in southern Germany, injuring at least three people, federal police told German news agency dpa. Roughly 100 people were aboard the train when at least two carriages derailed in a forested area around 6.10pm local time (5.10pm GMT), dpa reported. Photos from the scene showed parts of the train on its side as rescuers climbed on top of the carriages. The crash happened near the town of Riedlingen, dpa reported, roughly 158 kilometers (98 miles) west of Munich. Details about what caused the derailment were not immediately available. Federal police, who oversee the railroads, and Deutsche Bahn, Germany's main national railway operator, did not return reporters' requests for comment Sunday evening.
