Report: Wander Franco trial to begin Monday

Reuters2 days ago

June 1 - The trial of Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco, which was scheduled to start in December but was rescheduled due to the lack of availability of witnesses, is slated to begin Monday in the Dominican Republic, ESPN reported on Saturday.
Franco is facing charges of sexual abuse, sexual exploitation against a minor and human trafficking in his native Dominican Republic. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison. Per ESPN's report, prosecutors have "conclusive evidence" to support the charges.
ESPN reported in December that only three of the 36 witnesses scheduled to take the stand were in the courtroom in Puerto Plata. The other witnesses had not been located. Franco was present in the courtroom.
Franco, 24, was a rising MLB star in August 2023 when he was placed on administrative leave amid allegations he had engaged in a relationship with a then-14-year-old girl -- the month following his first All-Star selection. He was moved to the MLB's restricted list in July and remains the subject of an MLB investigation.
Franco found new trouble last month when he was arrested on charges of illegal use and possession of a firearm following an altercation in the Dominican Republic. A court date is pending in that case.
Franco remains under contract to the Rays, who signed him to an 11-year, $182 million contract extension in 2021. He is not paid while on the MLB restricted list.

Sal Frelick had two hits and a run scored for the Brewers, who had not won eight in a row since a nine-game winning streak in August 2023. Brewers right-hander Aaron Civale (1-1) allowed two runs and seven hits over 5 1/3 innings. He struck out five and walked one in his fourth start of the season. Reds starter Brady Singer (6-4) went five innings, allowing three runs and four hits while striking out four and walking three. TJ Friedl had two hits and scored a run in the leadoff spot for the Reds, who have lost four of five. Rob Zastryzny got the final two outs of the sixth for the Brewers, Jared Koenig worked a scoreless seventh, Abner Uribe did the same in the eighth and Trevor Megill pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 12th save. Milwaukee's pitching fanned 11 Cincinnati hitters and walked only two. Tigers 13, White Sox 1 Kerry Carpenter belted three home runs, Dillon Dingler and Wenceel Perez also homered to lift Detroit to a rout of host Chicago. Carpenter smacked two-run homers in the first and fourth innings and a solo shot in the sixth for his first career three-home run game. He finished with five RBIs. Jack Flaherty (4-6) spaced one run and four hits in six innings with one walk and four strikeouts. Chase Meidroth collected a pair of hits for the White Sox and scored their lone run in the sixth. Jonathan Cannon (2-7) allowed five runs and four hits -- three of which were long balls -- in three innings with three walks and five strikeouts. Angels 7, Red Sox 6 Los Angeles became the first visiting team to hit three home runs in the first inning of a game at Fenway Park and held on for a win over Boston. Jo Adell had a two-homer game, while Mike Trout highlighted a 3-for-4 night with a three-run shot in a six-run first inning. Ryan Zeferjahn (3-1) tossed a perfect seventh, while former Red Sox closer Kenley Jansen pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 12th save in as many chances. Jarren Duran went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored for the Red Sox. Richard Fitts (0-3) allowed five earned runs in just one inning of work. Rockies 6, Marlins 4 Hunter Goodman hit two home runs and drove in three runs to lift visiting Colorado to a win over Miami. The Rockies, who became the first team in the modern era of the National League (1901) to lose 50 games before winning 10, improved to 10-50. German Marquez (2-7) up nine hits and four runs in five innings and Zach Agnos pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save. Max Meyer (4-5) gave up five runs and 10 hits in five innings. Jesus Sanchez went 3-for-4 with a run scored and one driven in. --Field Level Media

Angels set Fenway Park record, hang on vs. Red Sox

June 3 - The Los Angeles Angels became the first visiting team to hit three home runs in the first inning of a game at Fenway Park and held on for a 7-6 win over the Boston Red Sox in the opener of a three-game series on Monday night. Jo Adell had a two-homer game, while Mike Trout highlighted a 3-for-4 night with a three-run shot, the Angels' second of three in the opening frame against Boston starter Richard Fitts (0-3). Leadoff hitter Zach Neto opened the six-run inning with a homer. Trout's 1,675 career hits are second in Angels history. Garret Anderson is first with 2,368. Ryan Zeferjahn (3-1) tossed a perfect seventh, while former Red Sox closer Kenley Jansen pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 12th save in as many chances. From the top of Boston's lineup, Jarren Duran went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two runs. The Angels scored five of their six first-inning runs before Fitts recorded his first out on his 33rd pitch, taking a 1-0 lead on Neto's drive that sailed over the Green Monster in left field and out of the ballpark. After Nolan Schanuel walked and reached third on Taylor Ward's single to right, Jorge Soler drove in a run while reaching on Red Sox third baseman Abraham Toro's fielding error. Trout's three-run homer to deep center -- 454 feet away -- made it a 5-0 Los Angeles lead. The next batter, Logan O'Hoppe, lined the first out against Fitts to first base, but Adell added to the visitors' lead with a solo shot to left-center. After Red Sox reliever Hunter Dobbins worked through the second and third innings by facing the minimum with the help of a double play ball, the hosts got on the board on back-to-back doubles by Duran and Rafael Devers with one out in the third. Devers lined his two-bagger past the dive of Ward in the left-center gap. Los Angeles starter Tyler Anderson started the fifth with his fifth and final strikeout, but did not complete the frame after the next four Red Sox reached base. He finished 4 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks. Rob Refsnyder's wall-ball single and a Carlos Narvaez line double to left plated runs, then with Hunter Strickland in for relief, Romy Gonzalez knocked a two-run double inside the first-base line to bring Boston within one. Adell wasted no time getting the run back for the Angels, crushing the first pitch of the sixth inning out to left-center. --Field Level Media

BREAKING NEWS New York Yankees rocked by injury to star pitcher Luke Weaver

New York Yankees closer Luke Weaver is expected to be out for up to six weeks after injuring his hamstring before Sunday's win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Weaver has been one of the standout players for the Yankees this season, taking over from struggling closer Devin Williams for the American League East leaders. He has eight saves to his name so far this season with an ERA of 1.05. Williams, traded for in the offseason from the Milwaukee Brewers, will now be expected to return to the spot he was signed for to make his own.
