Angels set Fenway Park record, hang on vs. Red Sox

Reuters2 days ago

June 3 - The Los Angeles Angels became the first visiting team to hit three home runs in the first inning of a game at Fenway Park and held on for a 7-6 win over the Boston Red Sox in the opener of a three-game series on Monday night.
Jo Adell had a two-homer game, while Mike Trout highlighted a 3-for-4 night with a three-run shot, the Angels' second of three in the opening frame against Boston starter Richard Fitts (0-3).
Leadoff hitter Zach Neto opened the six-run inning with a homer.
Trout's 1,675 career hits are second in Angels history. Garret Anderson is first with 2,368.
Ryan Zeferjahn (3-1) tossed a perfect seventh, while former Red Sox closer Kenley Jansen pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 12th save in as many chances.
From the top of Boston's lineup, Jarren Duran went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two runs.
The Angels scored five of their six first-inning runs before Fitts recorded his first out on his 33rd pitch, taking a 1-0 lead on Neto's drive that sailed over the Green Monster in left field and out of the ballpark.
After Nolan Schanuel walked and reached third on Taylor Ward's single to right, Jorge Soler drove in a run while reaching on Red Sox third baseman Abraham Toro's fielding error. Trout's three-run homer to deep center -- 454 feet away -- made it a 5-0 Los Angeles lead.
The next batter, Logan O'Hoppe, lined the first out against Fitts to first base, but Adell added to the visitors' lead with a solo shot to left-center.
After Red Sox reliever Hunter Dobbins worked through the second and third innings by facing the minimum with the help of a double play ball, the hosts got on the board on back-to-back doubles by Duran and Rafael Devers with one out in the third. Devers lined his two-bagger past the dive of Ward in the left-center gap.
Los Angeles starter Tyler Anderson started the fifth with his fifth and final strikeout, but did not complete the frame after the next four Red Sox reached base. He finished 4 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks.
Rob Refsnyder's wall-ball single and a Carlos Narvaez line double to left plated runs, then with Hunter Strickland in for relief, Romy Gonzalez knocked a two-run double inside the first-base line to bring Boston within one.
Adell wasted no time getting the run back for the Angels, crushing the first pitch of the sixth inning out to left-center.

EXCLUSIVE Actress who starred in iconic on-screen love triangle steps out with actor husband of 40+ years...can you guess who?

Her breakout role as a young college graduate caught in one of the most iconic love triangles in cinematic history saw her catapulted to stardom in the late 60s - and even earned her an Oscar nomination. From there, the Hollywood star went on to gain further recognition for her part in a critically acclaimed 1969 Western alongside Paul Newman and Robert Redford, followed by stellar performances in a string of thrillers and horror films. It was on the set of one of those films - in 1978 - that the now retired actress met her famously deep-voiced and mustachioed future fifth husband, to whom she remains married to this day. Though the silver-screen veteran is no longer acting, she is still turning heads, more recently, while stepping out in Malibu with her fellow actor hubby. The silver-haired couple were spotted enjoying a meal together with an elderly friend in exclusive photos. Can you guess who it is? It's Katharine Ross! Now 85, Ross was spotted with husband Sam Elliott, 80, grabbing lunch with a female pal during a rare public outing. The three dined at Café Habana, a chic Malibu hotspot owned by Cindy Crawford 's entrepreneur husband, Rande Gerber. Despite her advanced years, Ross looked sprightly and effortlessly stylish in a sage-colored light jacket (which happened to match her husband's sweater), blue jeans, sneakers, and a cream-colored scarf. Elliott was a considerate gentleman and helped the elderly lady to and from the restaurant following the trio's hour-long lunch. He was also dressed casually in a green top, black jeans and sneakers. Despite her advanced years, Ross appeared sprightly - and still chic - wearing a sage-colored light jacket - which happened to match her husband's sweater Ross, a California native, made her TV debut in the early 60s before landing her career-defining role in 1967 film The Graduate, where she played Elaine Robinson, the conflicted daughter of the infamous Mrs. Robinson. Two years later she cemented het status as a screen icon as schoolteacher Etta Place, the only significant female character in 1969 film, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. It was in that movie - now regarded as one of the greatest American films - that she and co-star Paul Newman, who played Butch Cassidy, famously rode on a bicycle together in an iconic scene. Just a few years later, Ross would land a role in supernatural horror film, The Legacy, where Elliott would play her on-screen boyfriend. The two would tie the knot six years later in 1984, and marked their 40th anniversary in May 2024. Prior to marrying Elliott, Ross had endured a series of short-lived marriages to four different men. But her marriage to her fifth husband remarkably has withstood the test of time - and Hollywood - and appears as strong as ever today. The couple has been based in LA ever since and have one daughter, Cleo, now 40. And while his wife gracefully left the limelight about six years ago, Elliott remains active in Hollywood, even earning an Oscar nomination in 2019 for his role in A Star Is Born. Elliott gained recognition following his breakthrough role in 1976 drama Lifeguard and then as a character actor, but saw a career resurgence back in 2015 after appearing as a regular in Netflix series The Ranch. More recently he starred as grizzled cowboy Shea Brennan in 1883, the prequel to hit Paramount+ show Yellowstone.

Club World Cup ticket prices are SLASHED by FIFA amid concerns over empty seats - with 'tens of thousands still available' ahead of opening game

FIFA have slashed ticket prices for the Club World Cup ahead of the launch of the competition next week. The new tournament will kick off in the United States on Sunday June 15, with Al Ahly taking on Inter Miami in the tournament's opening match. In total, 32 teams will take part from all over the globe, including Manchester City and Chelsea from England as well as the likes of Real Madrid, Juventus and Bayern Munich. There have been growing concerns, however, that the first game, which features Lionel Messi 's Inter Miami of the MLS, will be met by thousands of empty seats as FIFA struggle to shift tickets. Tens of thousands of tickets have been left unsold for the game, which will be played at the Hard Rock Stadium - a ground that have a capacity of 65,326, according to The Athletic. It is reported that sales for the match are as low as 20,000, but FIFA have said the number is 'much higher' and the estimate is false. Tickets for the tournament have been sold under a dynamic pricing model, which sees prices determined by demand, and lowering costs indicate FIFA is struggling to sell them. They are being flung for as little as £17 ($24), with the lowest-priced match appearing to be between Argentine side River Plate and Japanese team Urawa Red Diamonds in Seattle. While fans can watch Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain for as little as £24 ($33) at Pasadena's 90,000 seat Rose Bowl. Tickets costs between just £19 ($26) and £29 ($40) for Palmeiras vs. Al-Ahly, Benfica vs Auckland, Mamelodi Sundowns vs. Fluminense and Ulsan vs. Mamelodi. Meanwhile, matches featuring Real Madrid currently cost the most, with prices starting at £228 ($310) for their clash against Saudi side Al-Hilal in Miami, while the lowest ticket costs £186 ($253) for their meeting with Austria's RB Salzburg in Philadelphia. The lowest priced ticket currently available to see the Spanish giants is £97 ($132) and sees them come up against Mexican side Pachuca in Charlotte. The prices appear to have risen after Los Blancos confirmed Xabi Alonso as their new boss and that Trent Alexander-Arnold would compete. Arne Slot's side pocketed a £10million fee from Madrid for the defender to join them early and therefore play in the tournament. Tickets for latter games in the group stage are currently more expensive the earlier ones, with FIFA appearing to be holding out that interest will increase in the tournament. While Inter Miami's second group game against Porto is selling for as low as £42 ($58), the final group game against Palmeiras starts at £83 ($113). In April, FIFA President Gianni Infantino claimed he was not worried about attendances because American stadiums have been packed during pre-season tours in recent years. 'I'm not worried at all to fill a stadium when teams are coming to play a World Cup, to play for something real, not just an exhibition game where sometimes the second or third squads are fielded and so on,' he said. 'This is a real game. This is a real competition. 'This is a real World Cup. It's the best players. It's the best teams coming.' Previous iterations of the competition have included just seven teams, with Manchester City winning the tournament in 2023. But the competition has a prize fund of £777m ($1bn), to be split among the 32 teams. In a statement, FIFA said they 'anticipate great attendances throughout the competition for this first-ever edition - a tournament that we believe will grow edition-on-edition.' They added: 'The strong international appeal has seen supporters from more than 130 countries book their ticket to the competition. The top 10 countries per ticket sales are the United States, followed by club fans from Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Canada, Germany, Saudi Arabia, France, Japan and Spain.' Earlier this year FIFA already drastically slashed the prices of tickets amid concern over a lack of interest. The cost of the cheapest seats for matches at the last-16 stage and beyond were dropped by as much as £310 ($385) following the introduction of a new 'value tier'. The lowest-priced tickets available for the semi-final for those who declare they are fans of a participating club had been priced at a staggering £423 ($526). However, they later became available for £113 ($140). And the cheapest tickets for the final – which were an eye-watering £717 ($892) – were later offered for a slightly more palatable £241 ($300).
