Drugs campaigner Peter Krykant praised as a 'lifesaver' as he is laid to rest

'Peter's death is a great tragedy to all those who knew and loved him. He undoubtedly saved lives and his legacy is evident.'
Drugs campaigner Peter Krykant was praised as a 'lifesaver' as he was laid to rest yesterday.

The dad of two, whose drugs consumption van in Glasgow made headlines around the world, had battled his own addiction issues and suffered relapses before his sudden death.

Krykant, 58, set out to force a change in the way addicts are treated in Scotland and the rest of the UK, personally financing a mobile service to allow people to inject drugs safely.

His efforts are recognised to have played a huge part in liberalising drugs policy in Scotland, where greater emphasis is now placed on the health of those in addiction.
After his funeral at Falkirk Crematorium, which was attended by several prominent politicians and drugs policy activists, Krykant was praised by MSP Paul Sweeney, who had helped staff the mobile drug service prior to be elected to his current seat.
Sweeney said: 'Peter's death is a great tragedy to all those who knew and loved him. He undoubtedly saved lives and his legacy is evident.'

Celebrant John Fox told gathered family and friends: 'The tragedy is that Peter cared so much about the cause of safe consumption and harm reduction to improve the lives and experiences of people who use drugs.
"Yet he was not able to address his own mental and physical health and to find his way out of addiction and back to the safe stability of his loving family and friends.'
Krykant's crusade, which defied UK law, operated in full sight of police in Glasgow for 10 months after he set it up in 2020. A state-backed safe consumption centre has since been established in Glasgow.
He converted an ambulance for addicts to use in Glasgow and discussed the service in a meeting with former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

Scot in terror probe claimed he would 'make 9/11 look like an episode of the Teletubbies'

A phone and tablet device were also examined which included the voice mess-age about the 2001 Twin Towers atrocity and him discussing with others 'murdering all the people who wronged you'. A Scot held in a terror probe claimed he would make the 9/11 attacks 'look like an episode of the Teletubbies'. Curtis Ross had a fascination with 'Unabomber' Ted Kaczynski – the lone wolf terrorist who killed three Americans and injured many others over nearly 20 years. Ross, 24, had been arrested after posting online a clip of himself blowing up two gas canisters near the River Leven in Methil, Fife. His home was raided and police found a drawing marked 'Project Payback'. A phone and tablet device were also examined which included the voice message about the 2001 Twin Towers atrocity and him discussing with others 'murdering all the people who wronged you'. Ross appeared in the dock last week at the High Court in Glasgow. He pled guilty to a charge of behaving in a threatening and abusive manner which included sending the concerning messages and voice notes on Snapchat and Facebook, causing an explosion, filming it and putting the footage on social media between June 25 and July 31 last year. Ross was remanded in custody and will be sentenced at a later date. A Facebook friend of Ross had spotted the explosion video in July last year. Detectives – along with Counter Terrorism officers – searched his home in the town. They found the 'Project Payback' drawing along with a sketch of a 'homemade explosive device '. Inside a desk were various items including a roll of wire, mobile phone batteries, nails, screws and a watch. The court heard there were also photos, videos and sketches of the 'Unabomber' on the devices as well as images of a pipe bomb and firearms together with 'various other clips which suggest violence'.

Scots beauty spot compared to 'Skid Row' as rowdy tourists drink and party

The site has been branded 'Skid Row' by furious locals as it has been invaded by tourists who camp beside the water and party through the night A picturesque Scottish site, Loch of Clunie in Perthshire, has been dubbed "Skid Row" as it's been overrun by unruly tourists indulging in alcohol-fuelled parties and criminal activities. ‌ The once tranquil spot has suffered from over-tourism in recent years, with party-goers flocking to camp by the water. ‌ Local residents have voiced their concerns about antisocial behaviour, including violence and littering. ‌ Some visitors have even brought along generators, gazebos and a flatbed truck equipped with its own fresh water supply for camping and outdoor enjoyment. However, the constant blaring of loud music throughout the night and drunken misbehaviour has resulted in locals being subjected to physical and verbal abuse, reports the Scottish Daily Express. ‌ Perth and Kinross Council have been accused of not doing enough to discourage troublemakers from wreaking havoc in the scenic area. Reports of nudity and drug use have also surfaced, with campers neglecting to clean up their rubbish after overnight stays. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! "I have people wandering into my garden asking if they can park there, people coming in and asking if they can use my loo. We have people having raves, it's like a music festival. I'm not a shrinking violet. I like a drink and I like loud music, but it's intolerable and I don't feel safe." Rangers have increased patrols in the area, collecting discarded items such as soiled nappies and a hypodermic needle. The locale typically teems with visitors between October or whenever the sun makes an appearance. ‌ Ms Crichton criticised the council and police response, stating: "Some of the rangers have been doing the job since before I got there so they know the area well and they're very invested in it. Every time I make a complaint, I'm told there's no law being broken. I cannot accept that." Negative feedback has also appeared on the Loch Clunie Facebook page, including a recent post from a man who visited the loch with his 10 year old daughter. He penned: "It was like Skid Row. Drunks everywhere - one or two being quite aggressive. Rubbish everywhere. Maybe half a dozen cars abandoned with parking tickets on them. Stayed for five minutes and left." Strathtay Councillor Ian James described the situation as an "absolute nightmare" for local residents. He commented that they were "putting up with loud music and drunken behaviour. Although it's a beautiful area, it's just not a nice place to be when it's like that." ‌ He alleged that a friend of his had been stabbed after requesting people not to camp in his garden. He added: "If this was Perth city centre, we'd have the police turning up and everybody would be trying their best to stop it, but this is in the countryside so it's unseen by most." A spokesperson for Perth and Kinross Council has stated that the local authority is keen for both visitors and residents to enjoy areas such as Loch of Clunie in a "safe, responsible and courteous manner". The spokesperson further added: "Parking attendants patrol the clearways, issuing guidance and penalty notices as appropriate. "We fully recognise the community's ongoing concerns about repeated incidents of irresponsible camping near residential properties. Given the understandable feelings of vulnerability and anxiety this has caused, we have advised residents not to engage directly with visitors and to report any threatening behaviour to Police Scotland." A representative from Police Scotland said: "We understand the impact anti-social behaviour and disorder has on the local community, and we would like to thank locals who continue to bring these incidents to our attention. Officers continue to work with local partners to address any concerns in the area, and where criminality is established, those responsible will be dealt with appropriately."

Germany train derailment kills at least three leaving others seriously injured

Authorities confirmed approximately 100 passengers were on the train when at least two carriages left the tracks in Biberach, Germany, with several people killed. At least three people were killed and others seriously injured when a train derailed in southern Germany, police say. ‌ Authorities said around 100 passengers were on board the RE55 regional express train when it left the tracks in the Biberach district. ‌ A large number of emergency services were deployed to the scene. Preliminary reports say the crash resulted in numerous injuries. ‌ Several people were killed in what has been described as a "mass casualty incident" by local authorities, reports the Mirror. Federal and local police said the cause of the crash near Riedlingen, roughly 158km (98 miles) west of Munich, remains under investigation. It was not immediately clear how many people were injured. In a statement shared on X, German chancellor Friedrich Merz said: "The train accident in the Biberach district deeply shocks me. ‌ "I am in close contact with the Interior Minister and the Transport Minister, and I have asked them to support the rescue services with all available means. "We mourn the victims. I express my condolences to their families." According to the German Press Agency (dpa), Baden-Württemberg's Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) is also heading to the scene of the accident. His spokesman said he will get an impression of the rescue efforts following the derailment. ‌ A spokesperson for the Federal Police Stuttgart told Bild: "Two carriages of the Deutsche Bahn regional express have derailed." Because of the number of people killed and injured, the crash has been declared a mass casualty incident by German authorities. This typically happens when rescue services deal with an incident in which a large number of injured or sick people need to be cared for. ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
