‘No need for concern': IGP says KL safe, Brickfields and Cheras shootings were targeted, tied to internal disputes
KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — Malaysia's capital city is very much safe despite two separate shooting cases in Brickfields and Cheras recently, the country's top policeman said today.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said both incidents were not random public shootings, but believed to have been triggered by disputes between the victims and the gunmen, with specific motives involved, Bernama reported today.
'As stated by Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa, the incidents involved targeted individuals and arose from conflicts that originated outside the capital area,' he was quoted as saying.
'There is no need for public concern, as security around Kuala Lumpur remains under control.'
Razarudin added that following the incidents, the Kuala Lumpur police have intensified patrols and operations to ensure continued public order.
The first shooting incident occurred last Friday at a restaurant on Jalan Tun Sambanthan in Brickfields.
The second incident took place late last night on Jalan Loke Yew in Cheras.
Rusdi reportedly said that the cases are believed to be connected to smuggling activities in Sibu, Sarawak.

'Police have launched an operation to track down the remaining escapees, with the assistance of the K9 unit from the Negeri Sembilan police headquarters and officers from the Jelebu branch of the National Anti-Drugs Agency,' Bernama reported him as saying. Azizan said the trainees still at large were P Tinogaran, 36, whose last known address is Apartment Taman Sentosa in Perak; G Vinaiyetiran, 36, from Taman Munsyi Ibrahim in Johor; V Manimaran, 38, from Taman Seri Bernam in Selangor; S Bala Ganes, 42, from Bandar Baru Sultan Suleiman, Selangor; and K Mohanarajh, 25, from Taman Bertuah in Perak. He urged members of the public with information to contact the nearest police station or the Jelebu police headquarters at 06-613 6222 or 06-613 7999. The case is being investigated under Sections 223 and 224 of the Penal Code for escape from confinement and resistance to lawful apprehension.

MACC remands 5 for false claims in worker permit applications

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has remanded three company directors and two managers to assist in an investigation into a case involving the submission of documents containing false particulars to obtain foreign worker permits in Negeri Sembilan. Magistrate Fairuz Syuhada Amran issued a four-day remand order until June 21 for two of them, including a woman, while the other three men were remanded for seven days until June 24. Bernama quoted a source as saying all five suspects, including two Bangladeshis and one Pakistani aged between 30 and 50, were detained at about 5pm yesterday when they went to give their statements at the Negeri Sembilan MACC office. 'The suspects are believed to have conspired in committing the offence in 2023. 'Preliminary investigations found they submitted applications under the Labour Recalibration Programme 2.0 to the Negeri Sembilan immigration department, suspected to contain false information, to obtain foreign worker permits even though the workers were not employed by the companies concerned,' the source said. State MACC director Awangkok Ahmad Taufik Putra Awang Ismail confirmed the arrests.

Apex court allows Najib to attend appeal hearing on royal addendum

(EPA Images pic) PETALING JAYA : The Federal Court today allowed an application by Najib Razak to attend the hearing of the attorney-general's appeal on the existence of a royal addendum allegedly permitting him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest. A three-member panel comprising Chief Judge of Malaya Hasnah Hashim and Federal Court judges Zabariah Yusof and Hanipah Farikullah allowed the application, and issued an order to facilitate Najib's presence at the hearing in July. Bernama reported that the former prime minister's counsel, Shafee Abdullah, submitted the application and that it was unopposed by federal counsel Ainna Sherina Saipolamin, who represented the attorney-general. The Federal Court had previously fixed July 1 and 2 to hear the appeal against a Court of Appeal decision that allowed Najib to initiate a judicial review related to the addendum. In a 2-1 majority decision on Jan 6, the Court of Appeal remitted the case on Najib's claim of the existence of a royal addendum purportedly allowing him to serve the remainder of his six-year prison sentence under house arrest to the High Court to be heard on its merits. This decision overturned the High Court's earlier dismissal of Najib's application for leave to commence a judicial review regarding the alleged addendum. Najib is currently serving a six-year jail sentence in connection with the SRC International Sdn Bhd case, following the Federal Court's dismissal of his appeal and review application. In February last year, the Federal Territories Pardons Board reduced his initial 12-year jail sentence and fine of RM210 million to six years and a RM50 million fine.
