Sharjah will open a new eco-retreat on its east coast later this year, introducing an off-grid hospitality concept that combines luxury accommodation with minimal environmental impact. Scheduled for launch in the fourth quarter of 2025, Nomad will feature 20 solar-powered trailers in Kalba's mountain valleys, near the Kalba Nature Reserve. Built locally, the units will operate with a no-Wi-Fi, lights-off approach to encourage digital disconnection and protect night-sky visibility. The project is the latest addition to the 'Sharjah Collection,' a portfolio of eco-retreats operated by the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq). The authority has invested more than Dh300 million in recent years to expand the network, which now covers seven destinations spread across the emirate's deserts, coasts, mountains and heritage towns. Officials say the developments aim to preserve cultural identity and biodiversity while offering visitors slower, more meaningful travel experiences. Global demand for such experiences has been on the rise. The Global Wellness Institute estimates that wellness tourism will exceed $1 trillion in 2025, while the 'slow travel' movement — which focuses on cultural depth, tranquillity and sustainability — is expanding at around 10 per cent annually. Sharjah's own tourism figures reflect the trend: guest numbers rose 11 per cent in 2024, with international occupancy continuing to climb in the first quarter of this year, according to Shurooq. Together, the Sharjah Collection now offers 154 accommodation units across varied landscapes. Officials describe the retreats as part of a wider Dh850 million hospitality portfolio. Al Faya Retreat, located in Mleiha's desert, has repurposed two 1960s buildings into a five-room boutique property with desert trails and contemporary dining. In Kalba, Kingfisher Retreat sits within a mangrove reserve managed with the Environment and Protected Areas Authority, offering 40 sea-facing tents built with sustainable materials. Moon Retreat in Mleiha is a glamping site, with domes and premium tents hosting activities from yoga to stargazing. Other projects include Al Badayer Retreat in Sharjah's red dunes, styled after a caravanserai and offering dune adventures and camel rides. On the east coast, Najd Al Meqsar in Khorfakkan incorporates restored heritage houses and access to a 300-year-old fort, while Al Rayaheen Retreat in the town's historic centre has seen 19 traditional homes transformed into guest facilities and cultural spaces in collaboration with the Sharjah Institute for Heritage.

British millionaires eye UAE as potential haven amid wealth tax concerns
More than half of British millionaires would consider leaving the UK if a wealth tax is introduced, and the UAE ranks among the top five countries they would consider relocating to, according to a study by Arton Capital. When asked which countries they would be most interested in moving to, the survey found the US topped the list among wealthy Brits, followed by Canada in second place and Australia in third. The UAE ranked fourth, reflecting a continued attraction to English-speaking nations as well as luxury lifestyle destinations. Armand Arton, CEO of Arton Capital, said many British millionaires are feeling increasingly disillusioned with the direction the UK is taking. 'The UAE offers a breath of fresh air. With no personal income tax, a business-friendly environment, and a culture that actively encourages entrepreneurship, it has become an attractive hub for wealth creators seeking both lifestyle and financial advantages,' Arton told Khaleej Times in an interview on Tuesday. The UK government is reportedly considering the introduction of a new wealth tax on high-net-worth individuals to boost public revenues. Earlier this month, the Financial Times reported that a number of UK company directors are relocating to the UAE to avoid high taxes in Europe. The report noted that 3,790 company directors had declared their departure from the UK, with the UAE emerging as a top destination. It is estimated that more than 240,000 British citizens already live in the UAE, working across various sectors. Golden Visa a major draw Arton highlighted the UAE's 10-year Golden Visa as a significant attraction. 'It doesn't just provide security and stability for families – the Golden Visa also acts as a strategic gateway to Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Europe, giving high-net-worth individuals the freedom to pursue international business and personal interests,' he said. 'Some wealthy individuals are even granted citizenship based on the level of investment and family office relocation, making the country even more appealing for centimillionaires and billionaires seeking added security and legacy planning.' According to the Capital Affluence and Elections Survey, 82 per cent of UK-based millionaires surveyed said they would be interested in investing in a Golden Visa or a Citizenship by Investment programme to obtain residency or citizenship through financial investment. The survey also found that 60 per cent believed they could enjoy a better quality of life abroad. Investing in Dubai property Dubai's real estate market is also proving to be a major draw for British millionaires due to its affordability and higher returns compared to the UK. British nationals are among the top investors in Dubai's property sector. 'The property market has a distinct appeal for British millionaires. Dubai's high rental yields and potential for asset appreciation are well known. This financial advantage is supported by a stable political environment and the absence of income tax,' Arton said. He added that the UAE offers a unique combination of luxury living, world-class infrastructure, and a thriving expatriate community — all within a pro-business environment. 'For many wealthy Brits — and Western Europeans in general — growing political and economic uncertainty has accelerated the search for alternative global hubs that offer stability, opportunity, and a high quality of life. The UAE clearly stands out as both a lucrative investment destination and a desirable place to relocate,' he added. The survey, conducted by Walr for Arton Capital, was carried out between July 31 and August 8 among 1,009 UK residents aged 18–70 with a net worth of at least £1 million. About 15 per cent of respondents had a net worth exceeding £5 million.

The winners — who are from the UAE, Kuwait and India — have revealed how they received the life-changing news. Winning after a decade Zakir Hussain Erattum Vakkatha, a 53-year-old Chief Accounts Manager and Sharjah resident from Kerala, won after nearly a decade of buying into the Big Ticket draw. He has been a regular participant since he heared about it from friends in 2016. He sometimes buys tickets alone and at other times with friends. He purchased his winning ticket on July 25, 2025. Changing lives Bikrama Sahu, a 48-year-old manager from India and UAE resident since 2011, won the prize after purchasing tickets regularly for the last seven to eight years. While his family resides in the UAE, his daughter recently returned to India for university. He first learned about his win through the website and a confirmation email. 'I couldn't believe that my name was there,' he recalled. Sahu purchases tickets every month, sometimes on his own and sometimes in a group of five to six friends. "I'm actually on the way to buy tickets today,' he shared with a smile. For him, Big Ticket is more than just a game of luck. Other winners Kabeer Kazhinkil and Nicholas Paul Varocky purchased their winning tickets on July 7, 2025 and July 30, 2025, respectively, and were overjoyed when they discovered that they were among the winners this month. August at Big Ticket There are several prizes to win at Big Ticket in August. Participants have the chance to win the grand prize of Dh15 million, which will be awarded during the live draw on September 3. The same draw will award six additional winners with Dh100,000 each.
